Guardian: "How real books have trumped ebooks"
by J.C. DE MARTIN May 14, 2017

May 14, 2017

*How real books have trumped ebooks* / //The digital revolution was expected to kill traditional publishing. But print books are ever more beautifully designed and lovingly cherished/ Alex Preston Books have always had a fetishistic quality to them, with their dusty secretiveness. Now, though, it feels like we’re living through a special moment in the history of book design and beautiful books are everywhere. Take George Saunders’s Lincoln in the Bardo with its marmoreal endpapers or Peter Frankopan’s The Silk Roads, with its cover inspired by mosaic from the Imam mosque at Isfahan; Sarah Perry’s The Essex Serpent, its sumptuous jacket inspired by the tiles of William Morris; 4th Estate’s gorgeous repackaging of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s backlist, based on vibrant African headwrap patterns; the glimmering Penguin Hardcover Classics reissue of the works of F Scott Fitzgerald, or its clothbound editions of Austen, Brontë and Dickens. It’s hard to know whether to read these books or caress them. […] Continua qui: https://www.theguardian.com/books/2017/may/14/how-real-books-trumped-ebooks…

More details, as they become available, will be here. > derek > > About the Book: > > Limits of the Digital Revolution challenges the dominant mythology of social media as the source of a radically democratic ‘participatory culture’. By examining the structural differences between social media and traditional mass media systems of representation, it argues that popular culture is more likely to continue to be dominated by a capitalist culture industry, which will be driven by the need to promote consumer behaviour and identity. While social media systems do have important implications for the way that people communicate, the book concludes by demonstrating that without a different social media system, which allows citizens to develop their capacities to express and represent themselves in ways free from the manipulation by capital, social media will not solve the problems in our popular culture. > > > "Derek Hrynyshyn has written a book explaining social media that reveals a wisdom beyond the author's years. This is a thoughtful, original, provocative, thorough and entirely up-to-date examination of the great media revolution in the world today and what it means going forward. It will be required reading for anyone serious about the subject. I give it an unconditional recommendation." > > Robert W. McChesney > co-author, People Get Ready: The Fight Against a Jobless Economy and a Citizenless Democracy > > > "The promise of sharing and connectivity in our age of screens comes under deep and insightful scrutiny in Derek Hrynyshyn’s powerfully argued book. Technological progress in no way guarantees the progress of humanity and Hrynyshyn shows us that the advances of social media have even coincided with distinctly uncivil movements. This is a critical, bracing, but also hopeful analysis of the new media systems that have become foundational myths in our lives." > > Michael Harris > author of Solitude and The End of Absence > > > > -- > Dept of Communication Studies > School of Public Policy and Administration > TEL 3024 York University Toronto Canada > > Author of Limits to the Digital Revolution: How Mass Media Culture Endures in a Social Media World (Praeger, 2017)

TechReview: "Is Automation Warping the Labor Market as Dramatically as We Think?"
by J.C. DE MARTIN May 12, 2017

May 12, 2017

*Is Automation Warping the Labor Market as Dramatically as We Think?* /A new study provides a counter to the conventional wisdom that robots are stealing our jobs./ by Jamie Condliffe May 11, 2017 The received wisdom is that automation is stealing away jobs from humans—maybe quickly, maybe slowly, but stealing nonetheless. A new report attempts to provide a counter to that school of thought. An analysis of 165 years of U.S. labor history by the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation—a think-tank supported by the tech industry—reveals that America isn’t currently experiencing high levels of job churn (that is, the creation of new occupations and destruction of old ones). In fact, the results show the rate of churn is at a record low. ITIF argues that because labor disruption measured by that metric is small, technology isn’t having as profound an effect on jobs as many people seem to think—and it won't in the future, either. IJoC special issue on venture labour
by Antonio Casilli May 11, 2017

May 11, 2017

Dear all, il nuovo numero dell'International Journal of Communication ospita una sezione speciale sul Venture Labor alla quale ho partecipato anche io -- nonché Gina Neff, Alice Marwick, Nicole Cohen, Laura Robinson, Barry Wellman and more. Lo trovate a questo indirizzo: http://ijoc.org/index.php/ijoc/index#more5 . Buona lettura, Antonio ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Arlene Luck < aluck(a)asc.usc.edu > Date: Wed, May 10, 2017 at 9:41 AM Subject: USC Annenberg Press | IJoC Publishes Special Section on Venture Labor International Journal of Communication Publishes a Special Section on Venture Labor Do workers now see taking big risks as the only way to get ahead? What is the impact of the high-stakes technology startup culture on the rest of the U.S. economy? What lessons do the trends in media and communication jobs teach us about the future of work? ________________________________________________________ Edited by Laura Robinson, Gina Neff, and Jeremy Schulz, this Special Section on Venture Labor begins to answer these and other timely questions about work and workers today. A broad-ranging group of international scholars explores the concept of venture labor from multiple perspectives. Venture labor is the explicit expression of entrepreneurial values by non-entrepreneurs. As contributors argue, venture labor leads to the normalization of risk-taking in work, even when the odds are long and the winners are few. Nonetheless, a spirit of risk-taking, once seen as restricted to technology start-ups, now attracts workers across many industries willing to forgo the benefits and safety nets of traditional employment in exchange for new risks and opportunities. Venture labor contributes to the shift of risk away from the social collectivity to the individual. This collection of essays covers venture labor phenomena including self-branding, social media professional marketing, entrepreneurial journalism, anytime-anywhere work, entrepreneurial self-actualization, crowdsourcing, and labor on ‘spec’ and other unpaid labor are all part of the venture labor trend covered in. The Special Section brings together voices from multiple social science perspectives including communication, sociology, and media studies, with contributions from Laura Robinson, Jeremy Schulz, Alice E. Marwick, Nicole S. Cohen, C.W. Anderson, Michelle Rodino-Colocino, Enda Brophy, Gina Neff, Paul Hirsch, Sarah Banet-Weiser, Ofer Sharone, Barry Wellman, Dimitrina Dimitrova, Tsahi Hayat, Guang Ying Mo, Beverly Wellman, and Antonio Casilli. Together, these contributors grapple with the power of contradictory forces remaking the workplaces of the 21st century. We invite you to read these 14 essays that published in the International Journal of Communication on May 10, 2017 at ijoc.org . ________________________________________________________________ Larry Gross Arlene Luck Editor Managing Editor Laura Robinson, Gina Neff, Jeremy Schulz Guest Editors
