MIT TechRev: "We Need More Alternatives to Facebook"
by J.C. DE MARTIN May 21, 2017

May 21, 2017

*We Need More Alternatives to Facebook* /Chastened by the negative effects of social media, Mark Zuckerberg says he will tweak his service and upgrade society in the process. Should any company be that powerful?/ by Brian Bergstein April 10, 2017 About 10 years after TVs began to be ubiquitous in American homes, television broadcasting was a staggering financial success. As the head of the Federal Communications Commission observed in a 1961 speech to broadcast executives, the industry’s revenue, more than $1 billion a year, was rising 9 percent annually, even in a recession. The problem, the FCC chairman told the group, was the way the business was making money: not by serving the public interest above all but by airing a lot of dumb shows and “cajoling and offending” commercials. “When television is bad, nothing is worse,” he said. That speech would become known for the pejorative that the FCC chairman, Newton Minow, used to describe TV: he called it “a vast wasteland.” It’s a great line, but there are other reasons to revisit the speech now, about 10 years after the emergence of another communications service—Facebook—that has become ubiquitous in American homes, a staggering financial success, and a transmitter of a lot of pernicious schlock. What’s striking today is why Minow said the vast-wasteland problem mattered—and what he wanted to do about it. Un trend: Netflix Blocks Rooted Phones From Seeing Netflix App - Netflix has confirmed the company is now preventing rooted
by gabriele elia May 16, 2017

May 16, 2017

Netflix e altri associano l'idea smartphone rooted - applicazioni sono da bloccare Netflix Blocks Rooted Phones From Seeing Netflix App -<http://wirelessiq.us8.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=5000b2674aa552c31856aa…> Netflix has confirmed the company is now preventing rooted Android phones from being able to install the company's streaming video app via the Play Store. Android Police was the first to note the changes in policy with the release of the 5.0 version of the Netflix app over at the Google Play store, which has been upgraded to integrate the Widevine DRM provided by Google. Oddly the app still seems to work if sideloaded, but it's not clear it's going to stay that way. In a statement Netflix confirmed that users with rooted phones may not even see the Netflix app show up in the Play Store. "With our latest 5.0 release, we now fully rely on the Widevine DRM provided by Google," Netflix has confirmed. "Therefore, many devices that are not Google-certified or have been altered will no longer work with our latest app and those users will no longer see the Netflix app in the Play Store." In fact, Netflix even appears to have blocked phones that simply have the bootloader unlocked. That's oddly troubling given that rooted phone users aren't doing anything particularly wrong in rooting their devices or installing custom ROMs. That said, there has been a slow trend in this direction in recent months, with the developers of Pokemon Go also blocking rooted devices from installing or using the game.
