What lessons do the trends in media and communication jobs teach us about the future of work? ________________________________________________________ Edited by Laura Robinson, Gina Neff, and Jeremy Schulz, this Special Section on Venture Labor begins to answer these and other timely questions about work and workers today. A broad-ranging group of international scholars explores the concept of venture labor from multiple perspectives. Venture labor is the explicit expression of entrepreneurial values by non-entrepreneurs. As contributors argue, venture labor leads to the normalization of risk-taking in work, even when the odds are long and the winners are few. Nonetheless, a spirit of risk-taking, once seen as restricted to technology start-ups, now attracts workers across many industries willing to forgo the benefits and safety nets of traditional employment in exchange for new risks and opportunities. Venture labor contributes to the shift of risk away from the social collectivity to the individual. This collection of essays covers venture labor phenomena including self-branding, social media professional marketing, entrepreneurial journalism, anytime-anywhere work, entrepreneurial self-actualization, crowdsourcing, and labor on ‘spec’ and other unpaid labor are all part of the venture labor trend covered in. The Special Section brings together voices from multiple social science perspectives including communication, sociology, and media studies, with contributions from Laura Robinson, Jeremy Schulz, Alice E. Marwick, Nicole S. Cohen, C.W. Anderson, Michelle Rodino-Colocino, Enda Brophy, Gina Neff, Paul Hirsch, Sarah Banet-Weiser, Ofer Sharone, Barry Wellman, Dimitrina Dimitrova, Tsahi Hayat, Guang Ying Mo, Beverly Wellman, and Antonio Casilli. Airport face recognition could extend to US citizens, says Customs

But new statements show that CBP’s plans could make facial scans necessary for US citizens as well, documenting them when they reenter the country or pass through TSA checkpoints. The result would eventually grow into an airport-wide system Customs officials call “The Biometric Pathway.” John Wagner, deputy assistant commissioner at CBP, laid out that vision at the ConnectID conference last week. “We’re going to build this for [Biometric] Exit. We’re out of time, we have to,” Wagner told the crowd. “But why not make this available to everyone? Why not look to drive the innovation across the entire airport experience?” According to Wagner, that could mean using facial recognition to identify travelers arriving in the US, including passport-holding citizens. As the system expands to TSA checkpoints or airport lounge access, it would also be applied to domestic travelers, regardless of citizenship status. “As soon as you check in for arrivals or departure, we’re going to stage your photo in that database,” Wagner said. “We want to make it available for every transaction in the airport where you have to show an ID today.” [...]

It has created a countrywide Federated OpenStack cloud using Ubuntu OpenStack and Canonical’s model driven operations tools, MAAS and Juju. Based on a federated architecture design that allows institutions to contribute and share resources over multiple cloud regions, GARR has been able to overcome the limitations of the basic OpenStack software in order to deal with multiple tenancy, partitioning and limiting the use of resources by automating the whole deployment process. GARR cloud infrastructure consists of data centres in 5 different locations and has deployed Ubuntu OpenStack, the most widely used OpenStack deployment in production clouds in the world today. At the recent annual workshop GARR 2017, GARR demonstrated how they can stand up a cloud remotely in 20 minutes and automate all the maintenance with Juju and by using MAAS and Juju, GARR has achieved levels of efficiency more commonly seen in the large data centres of Google and AWS. Juju also allows GARR to serve the long tail of science, allowing researchers from any field to deploy self-service cloud applications, chosen from a marketplace of open source software available within Canonical’s Juju ecosystem. Juju Charms have become an established ecosystem of best-in-class applications which use shared, open source operations code for common components so CIOs can focus precious resources on creating software that is unique to their business. When it comes to deploying OpenStack with Charms, having the repeatability of use while still maintaining flexibility in the choice of the individual components, its configuration, and architecture means the solution chosen can evolve and change rapidly. Commenting Giuseppe Attardi, coordinator of the Distributed Computing and Storage Department, GARR: “The demand for cloud services in research and education is taking momentum and Italy is no exception. GARR is applying to cloud computing the same successful community based model used for networking, setting up a Federated cloud rather than resorting just to public clouds. It is clear though that our cloud offering had to be competitive with commercial offerings, hence it was necessary to rely on extensive use of automation on OpenStack. Canonical’s entire approach to model driven operations was our best choice to achieve the right level of economics for run our service competitively. Juju has also provided us with an application marketplace that we can offer to our users and increases the take up of our services. We are ourselves actively contributing to the Juju application, in particular for teaching and e-learning, e.g. Moodle in the Cloud and Jupyter Notebooks”. “There can be many drivers for an organisation to adopt on premises cloud solutions, such as OpenStack, versus using Public cloud infrastructure. *SCIENCE FICTION** **PROMISES AND POETICS OF TECHNOSCIENCE* WORKSHOP Monday 15 May 2017, 6.00 pm Istituto Svizzero di Roma, via Liguria 20 “Research is the future of research.” More than a century ago Max Weber mused in these terms on the prospective outlook of modern science (cf. Aron 1967). In hindsight, Weber’s efforts at distinguishing between scienti c vocation and political profession may seem vain. His efforts tended indeed to cover up the mutual dependency, common characteristics, and intricate relationships between the two. Yet Weber’s sociological emphasis on the prospective outlook of science still resonates with the “economy of promises” (Joly 2010) that current technosciences draw upon, not least of which the grand promise of “Converging Technologies for Improving Human Performance” (Roco and Bainbridge 2002). Have nano- and biotechnologies met the expectancies that they continue to nourish? Have cognitive and computer sciences lived up to their promises? And upon which basis is and should that be decided? This research workshop takes up the outlined questions by homing in on the promises and poetics of technoscience. In particular, the workshop examines the discursive promotion of scienti c breakthrough and technological innovation, whilst making explicit the imaginaries, intricacies, and ironies that this promotion entails. Discursive moves and political resonances, in and through rhetorical gestures of “science ction,” will be examined more closely. Therefore, the workshop brings together leading and upcoming scholars in Science and Technology Studies (STS) from Switzerland, Italy, and Austria. The workshop is organized by the Swiss Institute in Rome, in collaboration with STS Italia and Interface Science- Sociétés of the University of Lausanne.
