Artificial intelligence (AI) is a technology for manufacturing excuses. While lacking clear definitions or tools for assessment, AI has nonetheless seized the imagination of politicians and managers across government, academia, and industry. But what AI is best at producing is justifications. If you want a labor force, a regulatory bureaucracy, or accountability to disappear, you simply say, “AI can do it.” Then, the conversation shifts from explaining why these things should or should not go away to questions about how AI would work in their place. We are in the midst of a political coup that, if successful, would forever change the nature of American government. It is not taking place in the streets. There is no martial law. It is taking place cubicle by cubicle in federal agencies and in the mundane automation of bureaucracy. The rationale is based on a productivity myth that the goal of bureaucracy is merely what it produces (services, information, governance) and can be isolated from the process through which democracy achieves those ends: debate, deliberation, and consensus. AI then becomes a tool for replacing politics. The Trump administration frames generative AI as a remedy to "government waste." However, what it seeks to automate is not paperwork but democratic decision-making. Elon Musk and his Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) are banking on a popular but false delusion that word prediction technologies make meaningful inferences about the world. They are using it to sidestep Congressional oversight of the budget, which is, Constitutionally, the allotment of resources to government programs through representative politics. AI haters build tarpits to trap and trick AI scrapers that ignore robots.txt

Last summer, Anthropic inspired backlash when its ClaudeBot AI crawler was accused of hammering websites a million or more times a day. And it wasn't the only artificial intelligence company making headlines for supposedly ignoring instructions in robots.txt files to avoid scraping web content on certain sites. Around the same time, Reddit's CEO called out all AI companies whose crawlers he said were "a pain in the ass to block," despite the tech industry otherwise agreeing to respect "no scraping" robots.txt rules. Watching the controversy unfold was a software developer whom Ars has granted anonymity to discuss his development of malware (we'll call him Aaron). Shortly after he noticed Facebook's crawler exceeding 30 million hits on his site, Aaron began plotting a new kind of attack on crawlers "clobbering" websites that he told Ars he hoped would give "teeth" to robots.txt. Building on an anti-spam cybersecurity tactic known as tarpitting, he created Nepenthes, malicious software named after a carnivorous plant that will "eat just about anything that finds its way inside." Aaron clearly warns users that Nepenthes is aggressive malware. It's not to be deployed by site owners uncomfortable with trapping AI crawlers and sending them down an "infinite maze" of static files with no exit links, where they "get stuck" and "thrash around" for months, he tells users. Once trapped, the crawlers can be fed gibberish data, aka Markov babble, which is designed to poison AI models. That's likely an appealing bonus feature for any site owners who, like Aaron, are fed up with paying for AI scraping and just want to watch AI burn. Tarpits were originally designed to waste spammers' time and resources, but creators like Aaron have now evolved the tactic into an anti-AI weapon. As of this writing, Aaron confirmed that Nepenthes can effectively trap all the major web crawlers. So far, only OpenAI's crawler has managed to escape. It's unclear how much damage tarpits or other AI attacks can ultimately do. Last May, Laxmi Korada, Microsoft's director of partner technology, published a report detailing how leading AI companies were coping with poisoning, one of the earliest AI defense tactics deployed. He noted that all companies have developed poisoning countermeasures, while OpenAI "has been quite vigilant" and excels at detecting the "first signs of data poisoning attempts." Despite these efforts, he concluded that data poisoning was "a serious threat to machine learning models." And in 2025, tarpitting represents a new threat, potentially increasing the costs of fresh data at a moment when AI companies are heavily investing and competing to innovate quickly while rarely turning significant profits. "A link to a Nepenthes location from your site will flood out valid URLs within your site's domain name, making it unlikely the crawler will access real content," a Nepenthes explainer reads. The only AI company that responded to Ars' request to comment was OpenAI, whose spokesperson confirmed that OpenAI is already working on a way to fight tarpitting. "We’re aware of efforts to disrupt AI web crawlers," OpenAI's spokesperson said. "We design our systems to be resilient while respecting robots.txt and standard web practices." But to Aaron, the fight is not about winning. Instead, it's about resisting the AI industry further decaying the Internet with tech that no one asked for, like chatbots that replace customer service agents or the rise of inaccurate AI search summaries. By releasing Nepenthes, he hopes to do as much damage as possible, perhaps spiking companies' AI training costs, dragging out training efforts, or even accelerating model collapse, with tarpits helping to delay the next wave of enshittification. "Ultimately, it's like the Internet that I grew up on and loved is long gone," Aaron told Ars. "I'm just fed up, and you know what? Let's fight back, even if it's not successful. Be indigestible. Grow spikes." Nepenthes instantly inspires another tarpit Nepenthes was released in mid-January but was instantly popularized beyond Aaron's expectations after tech journalist Cory Doctorow boosted a tech commentator, Jürgen Geuter, praising the novel AI attack method on Mastodon. Very quickly, Aaron was shocked to see engagement with Nepenthes skyrocket. "That's when I realized, 'oh this is going to be something,'" Aaron told Ars. "I'm kind of shocked by how much it's blown up." It's hard to tell how widely Nepenthes has been deployed. Site owners are discouraged from flagging when the malware has been deployed, forcing crawlers to face unknown "consequences" if they ignore robots.txt instructions. Aaron told Ars that while "a handful" of site owners have reached out and "most people are being quiet about it," his web server logs indicate that people are already deploying the tool. Likely, site owners want to protect their content, deter scraping, or mess with AI companies. When software developer and hacker Gergely Nagy, who goes by the handle "algernon" online, saw Nepenthes, he was delighted. At that time, Nagy told Ars that nearly all of his server's bandwidth was being "eaten" by AI crawlers. Already blocking scraping and attempting to poison AI models through a simpler method, Nagy took his defense method further and created his own tarpit, Iocaine. He told Ars the tarpit immediately killed off about 94 percent of bot traffic to his site, which was primarily from AI crawlers. Soon, social media discussion drove users to inquire about Iocaine deployment, including not just individuals but also organizations wanting to take stronger steps to block scraping. Iocaine takes ideas (not code) from Nepenthes, but it's more intent on using the tarpit to poison AI models. Nagy used a reverse proxy to trap crawlers in an "infinite maze of garbage" in an attempt to slowly poison their data collection as much as possible for daring to ignore robots.txt. Taking its name from "one of the deadliest poisons known to man" from The Princess Bride, Iocaine is jokingly depicted as the "deadliest poison known to AI." While there's no way of validating that claim, Nagy's motto is that the more poisoning attacks that are out there, "the merrier." He told Ars that his primary reasons for building Iocaine were to help rights holders wall off valuable content and stop AI crawlers from crawling with abandon. Tarpits aren’t perfect weapons against AI Running malware like Nepenthes can burden servers, too. Aaron likened the cost of running Nepenthes to running a cheap virtual machine on a Raspberry Pi, and Nagy said that serving crawlers Iocaine costs about the same as serving his website. But Aaron told Ars that Nepenthes wasting resources is the chief objection he's seen preventing its deployment. Critics fear that deploying Nepenthes widely will not only burden their servers but also increase the costs of powering all that AI crawling for nothing. "That seems to be what they're worried about more than anything," Aaron told Ars. "The amount of power that AI models require is already astronomical, and I'm making it worse. And my view of that is, OK, so if I do nothing, AI models, they boil the planet. If I switch this on, they boil the planet. How is that my fault?" Aaron also defends against this criticism by suggesting that a broader impact could slow down AI investment enough to possibly curb some of that energy consumption. Perhaps due to the resistance, AI companies will be pushed to seek permission first to scrape or agree to pay more content creators for training on their data. "Any time one of these crawlers pulls from my tarpit, it's resources they've consumed and will have to pay hard cash for, but, being bullshit, the money [they] have spent to get it won't be paid back by revenue," Aaron posted, explaining his tactic online. "It effectively raises their costs. And seeing how none of them have turned a profit yet, that's a big problem for them. The investor money will not continue forever without the investors getting paid." Nagy agrees that the more anti-AI attacks there are, the greater the potential is for them to have an impact. And by releasing Iocaine, Nagy showed that social media chatter about new attacks can inspire new tools within a few days. Marcus Butler, an independent software developer, similarly built his poisoning attack called Quixotic over a few days, he told Ars. Soon afterward, he received messages from others who built their own versions of his tool. Butler is not in the camp of wanting to destroy AI. He told Ars that he doesn't think "tools like Quixotic (or Nepenthes) will 'burn AI to the ground.'" Instead, he takes a more measured stance, suggesting that "these tools provide a little protection (a very little protection) against scrapers taking content and, say, reposting it or using it for training purposes." But for a certain sect of Internet users, every little bit of protection seemingly helps. Geuter linked Ars to a list of tools bent on sabotaging AI. Ultimately, he expects that tools like Nepenthes are "probably not gonna be useful in the long run" because AI companies can likely detect and drop gibberish from training data. But Nepenthes represents a sea change, Geuter told Ars, providing a useful tool for people who "feel helpless" in the face of endless scraping and showing that "the story of there being no alternative or choice is false." Criticism of tarpits as AI weapons Critics debating Nepenthes' utility on Hacker News suggested that most AI crawlers could easily avoid tarpits like Nepenthes, with one commenter describing the attack as being "very crawler 101." Aaron said that was his "favorite comment" because if tarpits are considered elementary attacks, he has "2 million lines of access log that show that Google didn't graduate." But efforts to poison AI or waste AI resources don't just mess with the tech industry. Governments globally are seeking to leverage AI to solve societal problems, and attacks on AI's resilience seemingly threaten to disrupt that progress. Nathan VanHoudnos is a senior AI security research scientist in the federally funded CERT Division of the Carnegie Mellon University Software Engineering Institute, which partners with academia, industry, law enforcement, and government to "improve the security and resilience of computer systems and networks." He told Ars that new threats like tarpits seem to replicate a problem that AI companies are already well aware of: "that some of the stuff that you're going to download from the Internet might not be good for you." "It sounds like these tarpit creators just mainly want to cause a little bit of trouble," VanHoudnos said. "They want to make it a little harder for these folks to get" the "better or different" data "that they're looking for." VanHoudnos co-authored a paper on "Counter AI" last August, pointing out that attackers like Aaron and Nagy are limited in how much they can mess with AI models. They may have "influence over what training data is collected but may not be able to control how the data are labeled, have access to the trained model, or have access to the Al system," the paper said. Further, AI companies are increasingly turning to the deep web for unique data, so any efforts to wall off valuable content with tarpits may be coming right when crawling on the surface web starts to slow, VanHoudnos suggested. But according to VanHoudnos, AI crawlers are also "relatively cheap," and companies may deprioritize fighting against new attacks on crawlers if "there are higher-priority assets" under attack. And tarpitting "does need to be taken seriously because it is a tool in a toolkit throughout the whole life cycle of these systems. There is no silver bullet, but this is an interesting tool in a toolkit," he said. Offering a choice to abstain from AI training Aaron told Ars that he never intended Nepenthes to be a major project but that he occasionally puts in work to fix bugs or add new features. He said he'd consider working on integrations for real-time reactions to crawlers if there was enough demand. Currently, Aaron predicts that Nepenthes might be most attractive to rights holders who want AI companies to pay to scrape their data. And many people seem enthusiastic about using it to reinforce robots.txt. But "some of the most exciting people are in the 'let it burn' category," Aaron said. These people are drawn to tools like Nepenthes as an act of rebellion against AI making the Internet less useful and enjoyable for users. Geuter told Ars that he considers Nepenthes "more of a sociopolitical statement than really a technological solution (because the problem it's trying to address isn't purely technical, it's social, political, legal, and needs way bigger levers)." To Geuter, a computer scientist who has been writing about the social, political, and structural impact of tech for two decades, AI is the "most aggressive" example of "technologies that are not done 'for us' but 'to us.'" "It feels a bit like the social contract that society and the tech sector/engineering have had (you build useful things, and we're OK with you being well-off) has been canceled from one side," Geuter said. "And that side now wants to have its toy eat the world. People feel threatened and want the threats to stop." As AI evolves, so do attacks, with one 2021 study showing that increasingly stronger data poisoning attacks, for example, were able to break data sanitization defenses. Whether these attacks can ever do meaningful destruction or not, Geuter sees tarpits as a "powerful symbol" of the resistance that Aaron and Nagy readily joined. "It's a great sign to see that people are challenging the notion that we all have to do AI now," Geuter said. "Because we don't. It's a choice. A choice that mostly benefits monopolists." Tarpit creators like Nagy will likely be watching to see if poisoning attacks continue growing in sophistication. On the Iocaine site—which, yes, is protected from scraping by Iocaine—he posted this call to action: "Let's make AI poisoning the norm. If we all do it, they won't have anything to crawl."

Stop Worshiping the American Tech Giants, by Lina Khan - Feb. 4, 2025 When Chinese artificial intelligence firm DeepSeek shocked Silicon Valley and Wall Street with its powerful new A.I. model, Marc Andreessen, the Silicon Valley investor, went so far as to describe it as “A.I.’s Sputnik moment.” Presumably, Mr. Andreessen wasn’t calling on the federal government to start a massive new program like NASA, which was our response to the Soviet Union’s Sputnik satellite launch; he wants the U.S. government to flood private industry with capital, to ensure that America remains technologically and economically dominant. As an antitrust enforcer, I see a different metaphor. DeepSeek is the canary in the coal mine. It’s warning us that when there isn’t enough competition, our tech industry grows vulnerable to its Chinese rivals, threatening U.S. geopolitical power in the 21st century. Although it’s unclear precisely how much more efficient DeepSeek’s models are than, say, ChatGPT, its innovations are real and undermine a core argument that America’s dominant technology firms have been pushing — namely, that they are developing the best artificial intelligence technology the world has to offer, and that technological advances can be achieved only with enormous investment — in computing power, energy generation and cutting-edge chips. For years now, these companies have been arguing that the government must protect them from competition to ensure that America stays ahead. But let’s not forget that America’s tech giants are awash in cash, computing power and data capacity. They are headquartered in the world’s strongest economy and enjoy the advantages conferred by the rule of law and a free enterprise system. And yet, despite all those advantages — as well as a U.S. government ban on the sales of cutting-edge chips and chip-making equipment to Chinese firms — America’s tech giants have seemingly been challenged on the cheap. It should be no surprise that our big tech firms are at risk of being surpassed in A.I. innovation by foreign competitors. After companies like Google, Apple and Amazon helped transform the American economy in the 2000s, they maintained their dominance primarily through buying out rivals and building anticompetitive moats around their businesses. Over the last decade, big tech chief executives have seemed more adept at reinventing themselves to suit the politics of the moment — resistance sympathizers, social justice warriors, MAGA enthusiasts — than on pioneering new pathbreaking innovations and breakthrough technologies. There have been times when Washington has embraced the argument that certain businesses deserve to be treated as national champions and, as such, to become monopolies with the expectation that they will represent America’s national interests. Those times serve as a cautionary tale. Boeing was one such star — the aircraft manufacturer’s reputation was so sterling that a former White House adviser during the Clinton administration referred to it as a “de facto national champion,” so important that “you can be an out-and-out advocate for it” in government. This superstar status was such that it likely helped Boeing gain the regulatory green light to absorb its remaining U.S. rival, McDonnell Douglas. That 1997 merger played a significant role in damaging Boeing’s culture, leaving it plagued with a host of problems, including safety concerns. On the other hand, the government’s decision to enforce antitrust laws against what is now AT&T Inc., IBM and Microsoft in the 1970s through the 1990s helped create the market conditions that gave rise to Silicon Valley’s dynamism and America’s subsequent technological lead. America’s bipartisan commitment to maintaining open and competitive markets from the 1930s to the 1980s — a commitment that many European countries and Japan did not share — was critical for generating the broad-based economic growth and technological edge that catapulted the United States to the top of the world order. While monopolies may offer periodic advances, breakthrough innovations have historically come from disruptive outsiders, in part because huge behemoths rarely want to advance technologies that could displace or cannibalize their own businesses. Mired in red tape and bureaucratic inertia, those companies usually aren’t set up to deliver the seismic efficiencies that hungry start-ups can generate. The recent history of artificial intelligence demonstrates this pattern. Google developed the groundbreaking Transformer architecture that underlies today’s A.I. revolution in 2017, but the technology was largely underutilized until researchers left to join or to found new companies. It took these independent firms, not the tech giant, to realize the technology’s transformative potential. "" Ho provato per diversi anni a realizzare servizi in casa per le università, come sanno Bregni e Verzulli: l’università di Pisa per anni aveva il propio mail server fatto in casa, il GARR aveva un cloud pubblico federato basato tutto su sw Open Source. Ma quando cercavo il coinvolgimento sia di colleghi che dei dirigenti universitari (con unica eccezione il Poli di Torino), la risposta è sempre stata negativa: chi ce lo fa fare, se tanto i servizi ce li danno gratis e sono fatti in modo professionale e intanto posso licenziare i sistemisti. Non torneremo qui a illustrare il lussureggiante corredo di trovate tossiche di varia natura – ma teleologicamente convergenti – che, diluite nel tempo, sono state rilasciate nel circuito scolastico, fino a diventarne componente essenziale, invadente e cancerosa. Sono oggetti ormai familiari, quasi suppellettili domestiche a cui abbiamo assuefatto la vista e tutti gli altri sensi: [le prove INVALSI]; l'orientamento, in entrata, in uscita e in tutte le salse; la didattica personalizzata e l'armamentario di certificazioni annesse (BES, DSA, ADHD, e PEI e PDP eccetera eccetera); il registro elettronico; il PCTO (ex alternanza scuola-lavoro); il CLIL ( Content and Language Integrated Learning); e si potrebbe continuare a lungo a elencare pezzi di paccottiglia assortita. Di essi abbiamo detto abbastanza. Ma è necessario ribadire un dato di fatto che a quanto pare sfugge a troppi addetti ai lavori che guardano il dito anziché la luna: ovvero come tutti questi corpi estranei – a parte la loro intrinseca scemenza, a parte la comune funzione a catturare un'infinità di tempo e di risorse per sottrarli alla scuola vera, e stravolgerne il senso – concorrano a formare una capillare rete di sensori già stesa, e già perfettamente integrata nel sistema, sulla quale far aderire a ventosa l'ombrello informatico, oggi straordinariamente potenziato dalla valanga di denaro (del contribuente) gabellato come elargizione del PNRR. Dunque, attraverso l'infrastruttura allestita in decenni di riforme, tutte le informazioni – di vita, di morte e di miracoli – relative a ciascuno studente, dall'asilo in poi, vengono carpite, risucchiate e immortalate nel buco nero delle banche dati, che ne fanno – soprattutto, ne faranno – uso libero e discrezionale, siano i rispettivi titolari volenti o nolenti. Quelli ai quali è stata fatta una testa così sulla tutela della privacy. È in atto una mastodontica operazione di spionaggio e di condizionamento a cui nessuno deve sfuggire. E a cui quasi nessuno, incredibilmente, pare obiettare. Segnala il sempre attento professor Marco Cosentino, dalla sua vedetta universitaria, l'enfasi che ultimamente giornaletti e giornaloni pongono sulla presunta piaga sociale del cosiddetto «abbandono scolastico» e sulle soluzioni escogitate dal manovratore – quello che crea il problema e allo stesso tempo, graziosamente, fornisce il rimedio che gli conviene. L'agitazione intorno al tema è tale da far sorgere il legittimo sospetto che si tratti di un ulteriore tormentone strumentale a portare acqua al solito mulino della sorveglianza e del credito sociale studentesco. E infatti. Per la causa [si scomoda nientemeno che Ferruccio de Bortoli], il quale sul /Corriere/ incensa il Politecnico di Milano per il successo conseguito nel contenere l'abbandono (detto anche drop out in italiano letterario) «utilizzando modelli statistici e algoritmi di /machine learning/» volti a «capire in profondità le ragioni delle difficoltà, anche psicologiche, degli studenti, facendo in modo di poterli seguire ed eventualmente assisterli meglio» così da salvare «tante carriere professionali». Il decantato programma di « [/learning analytics/]» sperimentato nell'ateneo milanese viene compiutamente descritto in una tesi di dottorato pubblicata per l'occasione nel medesimo ateneo, nelle cui conclusioni – lo riporta sempre il prof. Cosentino – si può leggere: « In senso più ampio, il futuro ha il /potenziale per accedere a dati che abbracciano l'intera vita di uno studente, dalla nascita al momento presente, in tempo reale/ . Ciò implicherebbe l'integrazione non solo delle prestazioni tradizionali e delle informazioni raccolte da tutte le istituzioni educative e gli ambienti precedenti con cui ogni studente si è impegnato, ma anche di informazioni sfaccettate relative alle circostanze personali di ogni studente, /che comprendono aspetti quali quelli medici, familiari, economici, religiosi, sessuali, relazionali, emotivi, psicologici e altro ancora . Queste diverse fonti di dati potrebbero essere raccolte e sintetizzate per migliorare e adattare il processo di apprendimento a ogni singolo studente in vari momenti della sua vita con un livello di precisione senza precedenti/ ». Come sempre, il veleno viene (grossolanamente) camuffato da medicina. E infatti de Bortoli chiude il suo pezzo apologetico così: «Prevedere precocemente il rischio di lasciare l'università consente di avviare interventi mirati. C'è un salvagente in più. E non è poco». No, non è affatto poco, siamo d'accordo con lui. È letteralmente mostruoso. La tesi di dottorato da cui è tratto lo stralcio qui sopra ha il merito di rendere esplicito il disegno che, comunque, era perfettamente intelligibile a un osservatore non del tutto accecato dall'euforia tecnologica. L'E-Portfolio, per esempio, una delle conquiste della scuola 4.0, non è altro che una scatola nera che ogni studente si trova compilata d'ufficio e d'ufficio appiccicata addosso, e che contiene le specifiche di tutta la sua carriera, scolastica e non. Lì dentro finiscono voti, giudizi, esiti di prove a crocette e altre prestazioni estemporanee; finiscono «capolavori» stancamente assemblati perché un genio ha deciso che sennò non puoi fare l'esame; finiscono sentenze di orientamento pronunciate da uno che passa di là e che, siccome ha vinto alla lotteria il patentino di orientatore, ha il potere di decidere della vita altrui umiliando chi quella vita la vive (vogliamo parlare di quanti [disastri fa l'orientamento]? Di quanto disorienta? Di quante esistenze rovina? Forse bisognerebbe fare un bilancio interrogando l'«utenza» che lo ha subìto). Ogni fase dell'esistenza viene scansionata e ogni file allegato al curricolo alimenta un avatar insindacabile e inemendabile che segue l'alunno come un'ombra incombente. Altro che salvagente. Ora, a parte che è lampante la carica discriminatoria di queste calamite di dati che influenzeranno piccole e grandi scelte di vita sottraendole al motore umano dell'intuito e della spontaneità, e che verranno rimpinzate di tacche luccicanti da chi abbia i mezzi per collezionarle – a prescindere peraltro dal loro effettivo valore: viaggi, corsi, vacanze-studio, certificazioni linguistiche, esperienze /globish/. I figli di papà avranno portafogli gonfi e portfoli stellari. E quelli che studiano, leggono libri, giocano a pallone nella squadra di quartiere, aiutano il fratellino a fare i compiti, faranno punteggio? Sono forse, le loro, attività meno formative? Ma questo, della sperequazione classista, è solo uno dei frutti avariati della malapianta, e nemmeno il più grave. Ci si chiede come sia possibile non vedere il mostro che stiamo nutrendo con tanto zelo per consentirgli di mangiarci meglio, e di espropriare meglio la nostra libertà naturale e la sovranità intoccabile che appartiene a ogni essere umano e alla sua famiglia. Come può passare sotto silenzio un condizionamento così penetrante e una sorveglianza così totale, diacronica e ubiquitaria, sull'individuo e su tutto quello che fa durante il lungo, articolato, tortuoso, ma soprattutto imprevedibile processo di crescita? Perché (quasi) nessuno si indigna? Non c'è chi non sappia, per esperienza diretta o indiretta, quanto sia frequente che un somaro si riscatti, che un fannullone si trasfiguri, che un presunto incapace sbocci e fiorisca. Chiunque abbia avuto a che fare con un soggetto in crescita sa bene come cambi taglia d'improvviso, come basti un niente per accendere una scintilla, suscitare una passione e provocare una svolta. Come ogni caduta sia una medaglia al valore e possa aprire la strada a conquiste preziose. Come il tempo lungo della maturazione non sia mai lineare, mai prevedibile né replicabile, e in questo risieda la sua infinita ricchezza. Sa bene che uno che da piccolo vuole fare il cow boy si ritrova pompiere e chi sogna di fare il pompiere diventa medico, elettricista, ingegnere. Le vocazioni si disvelano a contatto con gli imprevisti della vita, intercettando eventi incrociatori che nessun orientatore per caso può immaginare e nessun algoritmo potrà mai calcolare. Ed è folle chi pretenda di interferire con questo flusso meraviglioso, di prevedere algoritmicamente e manipolare programmaticamente la sorte delle persone. È folle chi lo consente. Ognuno ha diritto di fallire una stupida batteria di [test INVALSI], ha diritto di essere bocciato, di scivolare e di rimettersi in piedi. Ha il diritto all'oblio dei propri errori di gioventù, perché sono proprio quegli errori che servono a svegliarlo e a farlo diventare grande. Ha diritto che il mondo non scruti nelle pieghe del suo passato che è rodaggio alla vita, perché il mestiere del giovane è proprio quello di imparare. Ognuno ha diritto a essere bruco prima di diventare farfalla. Qualcuno, invece, ha l'interesse a coltivare bruchi per sempre, nel suo bravo allevamento di bruchi, e a sistemarli in fila per due nella società huxleyana gerarchicamente ordinata in cui è lui l'unico ente accentratore abilitato a scrutare, programmare, decidere arbitrariamente cosa premiare e come premiarlo, cosa punire e come punirlo. E dice ai bruchi che tutto questo è per il loro bene. E la più parte dei bruchi ci crede, e consegna felice le chiavi della propria casa, della propria vita e del proprio cuore. Che il padreterno ci dia la capacità di insegnare ai nostri figli il valore della libertà.
