Wired: "Sociologists Examine Hackathons and See Exploitation"
by J.C. DE MARTIN March 22, 2018

March 22, 2018

Erin Griffith 03.20.18 07:00 am *Sociologists Examine Hackathons and See Exploitation** * As the gospel of Silicon Valley-style disruption spreads to every sector in the economy, so too have the industry’s favorite competitive ritual, hackathons. The contests, where small teams of “hackers” build tech products in marathon all-night coding sessions, are a hallmark of Silicon Valley culture. Recall Facebook’s most famous hackathon, thrown on the eve of its IPO to show the world that the demands of being a public company would not kill the “hacker way” at One Hacker Way. Now, sponsors ranging from Fortune 500 conglomerates to conference organizers host them. Even New York Fashion Week and the Vatican have hosted hackathons. They’ve become part of a “toolkit” for large organizations seeking a veneer of innovation. Some organizers view them as recruiting opportunities, others as opportunities to evangelize their company’s technology platforms, and others simply want to be associated with something cool and techie. They’re so common that hackathon enthusiast Mike Swift started a company dedicated to organizing and building community around them called Major League Hacking. Last year the company provided services for more than 200 hackathons with more than 65,000 participants. The phenomenon is attracting attention from academics. One pair of sociologists recently examined hackathons and emerged with troubling conclusions. [...] continua qui: https://www.wired.com/story/sociologists-examine-hackathons-and-see-exploit…

In Passing SESTA/FOSTA, Lawmakers Failed to Separate Their Good Intentions from Bad Law, , Today was a dark day for the Internet.

In Passing SESTA/FOSTA, Lawmakers Failed to Separate Their Good Intentions from Bad Law Today was a dark day for the Internet. The U.S. Senate just voted 97-2 to pass the Allow States and Victims to Fight Online Sex Trafficking Act (FOSTA, H.R. 1865), a bill that silences online speech by forcing Internet platforms to censor their users. As lobbyists and members of Congress applaud themselves for enacting a law tackling the problem of trafficking, let’s be clear: Congress just made trafficking victims less safe, not more. The CLOUD Act: A Dangerous Expansion of Police Snooping on Cross-Border Data
by Alberto Cammozzo March 21, 2018

March 21, 2018

<https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2018/02/cloud-act-dangerous-expansion-police-…> The Clarifying Overseas Use of Data (CLOUD <https://www.hatch.senate.gov/public/_cache/files/6ba62ebd-52ca-4cf8-9bd0-81…>) Act expands American and foreign law enforcement’s ability to target and access people’s data across international borders in two ways. First, the bill creates an explicit provision for U.S. law enforcement (from a local police department to federal agents in Immigration and Customs Enforcement) to access “the contents of a wire or electronic communication and any record or other information” about a person regardless of where they live or where that information is located on the globe. In other words, U.S. police could compel a service provider—like Google, Facebook, or Snapchat—to hand over a user’s content and metadata, even if it is stored in a foreign country, without following that foreign country’s privacy laws.[1] <https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2018/02/cloud-act-dangerous-expansion-police-…> Second, the bill would allow the President to enter into “executive agreements” with foreign governments that would allow each government to acquire users’ data stored in the other country, without following each other’s privacy laws. For example, because U.S.-based companies host and carry much of the world’s Internet traffic, a foreign country that enters one of these executive agreements with the U.S. to could potentially wiretap people located anywhere on the globe (so long as the target of the wiretap is not a U.S. person or located in the United States) without the procedural safeguards of U.S. law typically given to data stored in the United States, such as a warrant, or even notice to the U.S. government. This is an enormous erosion of current data privacy laws. This bill would also moot legal proceedings now before the U.S. Supreme Court. In the spring, the Court will decide whether or not current U.S. data privacy laws allow U.S. law enforcement to serve warrants for information stored outside the United States. The case, /United States v. Microsoft/ <http://www.scotusblog.com/case-files/cases/united-states-v-microsoft-corp/> (often called “Microsoft Ireland”), also calls into question principles of international law, such as respect for other countries territorial boundaries and their rule of law. Notably, this bill would expand law enforcement access to private email and other online content, yet the Email Privacy Act <https://www.congress.gov/bill/115th-congress/house-bill/387>, which would create a warrant-for-content requirement, has still not passed the Senate, even though it has enjoyed unanimous support <https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2016/04/house-advances-email-privacy-act-sett…> in the House for the past two years <https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2017/07/eff-applauds-senate-email-and-locatio…>. Facebook Just Blocked This Cambridge Analytica Affiliate. Why Does It Still Have a State Department Contract?
by Alberto Cammozzo March 20, 2018

<http://www.defenseone.com/technology/2018/03/facebook-just-blocked-cambridg…> [] Barack Obama stood up <http://www.defenseone.com/technology/2016/06/navy-seal-isis-messaging/12893…> the Global Engagement Center in 2016 to help counter ISIS propaganda online. Among other things, the Center was intended to use data provided by users of social media platforms to craft highly targeted messages, use social networks to fight propaganda, in similar fashion as marketers use Facebook and Twitter to sell goods and services. The Center quickly turned to Facebook, according to Michael Lumpkin, the center’s founding director. “Using Facebook ads, I can go within Facebook, I can go grab an audience, I can pick Country X, I need age group 13 to 34, I need people who have liked — whether it’s Abu Bakr Al Baghdadi or any other set — I can shoot and hit them directly with messaging,” Lumpkin said at the 2016 Defense One Summit <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I5TvHYzbiM0>. computer science and societal implications
by Enrico Nardelli March 19, 2018

March 19, 2018

Computer scientists can no longer focus on a purely technical view of the world only. Societal implications have to be taken into account early in their work.
