Data From Millions Of Smartphone Journeys Proves Cyclists Faster In Cities Than Cars And Motorbikes
by Luigi Scorca Nov. 12, 2018

Nov. 12, 2018

Smartphone data from riders and drivers schlepping meals for restaurant-to-home courier service Deliveroo shows that bicycles are faster than cars. In towns and cities, bicyclists are also often faster than motorized two-wheelers. Deliveroo works with 30,000 riders and drivers in 13 countries. That bicyclists are faster in cities will come as no surprise to bicycle advocates who have staged so-called “commuter races” for many years. However, these races – organized to highlight the swiftness of urban cycling – are usually staged in locations and at hours skewed towards bicycle riders. The Deliveroo stats are significant because they have been extracted from millions of actual journeys. https://www.forbes.com/sites/carltonreid/2018/11/07/data-from-millions-of-s… -- Luigi Scorca Mob: +39 347 85 22 221 Mail: luigi.scorca(a)gmail.com

Re: [nexa] Autonomous Vehicle Ethics: Beyond the Trolley > Problem (call for papers) (Giacomo Tesio)

Will the population become redundant? | Eurozine
by J.C. DE MARTIN Nov. 10, 2018

Nov. 10, 2018

https://www.eurozine.com/will-population-become-redundant/ Automated technology and the digital economy have revived old fears about mass redundancy, but also inspired visions of a productive symbiosis between human and mechanized labour. Economic historian Robert Skidelsky surveys both the pessimistic and optimistic traditions of economic thought on mechanization and asks how policy can offset the effects of the rapid technological changes underway today.
