Nell'augurarvi un buon agosto, qualunque siano le attivita' a cui vorrete (potrete) dedicarvi, vi ricordo che il prossimo mercoledi' di NEXA si terra', come sempre, il secondo mercoledi' del mese, ovvero, l'*8 settembre* - sempre alle ore 18 in corso Trento 21. Il tema sara' il *cloud computing*. Gli obiettivi principali dell'incontro saranno due: 1. offrire un'introduzione, soprattutto tecnica, al tema (a mia cura); 2. identificare collaborativamente i temi di maggiore interesse per un centro come NEXA (p.es., privacy, interoperabilita', sicurezza, ecc.). Riflessioni su Wikileaks

Cari tutti, saprete tutti della recente pubblicazione, da parte del progetto Wikileaks, di una imponente quantità di materiale "segreto" (uso le virgolette apposta, vedi sotto) relativo alla guerra in Afghanistan (http://www.wikileaks.org/wiki/Afghan_War_Diary,_2004-2010) Seguo Wikileaks da un paio d'anni. Sinceramente credo che finora abbia pubblicato materiale anche più scottante del "pacchetto Afghanistan", che per altro mi pare (da commenti altrui, non ho ancora avuto modo di leggere con attenzione il tutto) non contenga granché rispetto a quanto una persona mediamente informata da altri mezzi rispetto alla televisione - e qui mi rendo conto di aver escluso di botto una buona parte della popolazione italiana :) - non potesse aver già concluso. Tuttavia, mi pare che quest'ultima uscita di Wikileaks abbia ricevuto una copertura mediatica e politica molto più elevata rispetto al passato, sia in Italia che altrove. Da qui alcune considerazioni che mi sono posto e che sottopongo qui in lista per un dibattito aperto: - il ruolo svolto da Wikileaks è positivo o negativo? O un po' positivo e un po' negativo? Oppure dipende dal tipo di informazione che viene pubblicata? E' innegabile che la mia generazione sia abituata ad un livello di trasparenza e condivisione dell'informazione - pilotata o meno, vedi sotto - del tutto incompatibile con l'approcio tradizionale in materia di "arcana imperii". - a proposito di "arcana imperii", mi pare che Wikileaks e il suo fondatore, Julian Assange, stiano alzando - e di molto - il livello di potenziale scontro tra i sostenitori e i detrattori della "condivisione dell'informazione". Gli stati sovrani, chi più chi meno, potevano chiudere un occhio di fronte a tale tendenza alle condivisione nell'ambito della cosiddetta "proprietà intellettuale". Ma quando questa condivisione va a toccare aree come le attività militari, i segreti di stato e via discorrendo, il discorso cambia. Come pensate che reagiranno, nel corto, medio e lungo periodo, gli stati sovrani di fronte a questa dimostrazione esplosiva e per certi versi sfrontata del (mezzo, quello completo contiene anche la propria antitesi) mantra "information wants to be free"? - per motivi professionali e di studio, ultimamente ho letto molto materiale su spionaggio/controspionaggio e in particolare sulle attività cosiddette di SIGINT (Signal Intelligence), così come messe in pratica dalla National Security Agency degli USA, il GHCQ britannico ed equivalenti agenzie di altri paesi. Un elemento costante è la necessità di analizzare le informazioni acquisite per poter decidere come agire; e uno degli elementi costanti di tali analisi è capire chi e perché produce determinate informazioni. A volte i "bersagli" si fanno intercettare perché *vogliono* che certe informazioni siano intercettate: o perché la informazioni sono in realtà erronee e si spera che chi le ha acquisite basi le proprie azioni su di esse, o perché sono in corso lotte intestine al bersaglio, o perché si vuole misurare la capacità di intercettazione del potenziale nemico (per esempio, la presenza di una talpa all'interno della propria organizzazione), e via discorrendo. Io stesso ho imparato che nella politica (europea, ma sono convinto che lo stesso discorso valga in altri ambiti) è molto diffusa il "policy-making by leaks", ovvero il forzare la mano al proprio potenziale avversario facendo trapelare certe informazioni suppostamente segrete. In questo contesto, come posizionare Wikileaks e in particolare le ultime "rivelazioni" sull'Afghanistan? Proprio oggi Lucio Caracciolo su Repubblica scrive dei suoi dubbi che tutto questo materiale possa essere passato per le mani di un soldato ventiduenne che l'avrebbe poi passato a Wikileaks, così come vuole la vulgata ufficiale. WEB: YOUTUBE VERSERA' A SIAE DIRITTI MUSICA IN STREAMING (AGI) - Roma, 28 lug. - Siae e YouTube annunciano di aver siglato un accordo di licenza che copre l'uso della musica in streaming nei video in Italia attraverso la piattaforma di video online. La licenza ha una durata di tre anni, fino al 31 dicembre 2012. Come risultato dell'accordo, autori, compositori ed editori musicali rappresentati da Siae saranno ricompensati quando viene utilizzata la loro musica. Interpellata, la Siae ha sottolineato che la corresponsione dei diritti d'autore non sara' a carico dei navigatori che fruiscono via Internet della musica in video. Emulatori e European Court of Justice

ECJ asked to confirm that emulating software does not infringe copyright OUT-LAW News, 27/07/2010 A small software company did not infringe copyright in analytical software giant SAS's software by writing a program that emulated its functions, the High Court has provisionally ruled. The Court has asked the European Court of Justice, though, to check that its interpretation of laws based on the EU's Software Directive [2009/24/EC] and Information Society [2001/29/EC] Directive is correct. SAS makes programmes which enable customers to analyse data and write other programs within the SAS environment to carry out specific functions. World Programming Limited (WPL) wrote a piece of software which would allow former SAS users to execute programs written in SAS's language without continuing to pay SAS for the use of its systems. WPL's software emulated the SAS system in an attempt to ensure that computer code written in the SAS system would behave in the same way in its system, which WPL said is cheaper than SAS's. SAS claimed that WPL's software infringed its copyright, broke the terms of its software licence with WPL itself and that WPL infringed its copyright by copying and reusing sections of its manuals and guides. The High Court said that while copyright law protected the source code of software programs, it did not prevent one company writing software that emulated the functionality of other software.
