Se tutto va' come speriamo, sabato 22 gennaio 2011 al mattino celebreremo a Torino il *giorno del pubblico dominio 2011* ("giorno" intenso in senso lato: sarebbe il 1 gennaio, infatti, che pero' e' una giornata piuttosto poco adatta per organizzare incontri pubblici). Ci sara' un'introduzione sul pubblico dominio e perche' e' importante a livello culturale, sociale ed economico, e poi passeremo a discutere l'italiano piu' prominente morto nel 1940 (ovvero, 70 anni fa), Vito Volterra. Volterra fu matematico di fama mondiale, senatore del Regno, nonche' grande organizzatore della ricerca: tra le altre cose e' stato il fondatore de facto del Politecnico di Torino nonche' il primo presidente del CNR. Fu inoltre uno dei 12 professori universitari (su circa mille) che nel 1931 rifiutarono di prestare il giuramento di fedelta' al fascimo: fu per questo licenziato in tronco. Passo' la maggior parte dei pochi anno che gli restavano da vivere all'estero, tornando a Roma poco prima di morire. Poi passeremo a parlare di un altro grande scrittore che entrera' nel pubblico dominio a inizio 2011 (salvo gabole legali), ovvero, Francis Scott Fitzgerald. http://www.unesco.org/new/en/communication-and-information/themes/professio… This UNESCO project intends to encourage, assist and accelerate media reforms in the EU candidate countries (Croatia, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, and Turkey) and EU potential candidate countries (Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Serbia and Kosovo (under UNSCR 1244), consolidate European standards on media accountability and self-regulation. Project focuses on two main area of interest: 1. developing the self-regulation tools and mechanisms and increasing the awareness and the valorisation of self-regulation among media professionals and organizations and, on the other hand, 2. speed up the approximation of the EU and international standards and best-practices in the field of media accountability in the targeted countries, especially in the field of audiovisual services and media legislative frameworks. This project builds on, and consolidates, the expertise in the countries and in the region, as well as puts in a regional context the pre-existent initiatives at the national level. In some countries self-regulation bodies have been established but they are largely described by media associations and organizations as either ineffective or non credible. In some other countries, workshops and studies highlighted the need for self-regulation mechanisms to be developed, but little has been done and still a wide consensus around the most effective implementation is lacking. In addition to this reference tool, UNESCO will develop supporting documentation, assist newsrooms in the targeting countries to experiment self-regulatory mechanisms, and will produce a “how-to” guide for the newsrooms interested to build their own accountability systems. The program will also facilitate the organization of two international thematic brainstorming meetings and local events in each project countries to bring together the relevant stakeholders. The project is funded by the European Commission.

25° Mercoledì di NEXA *Computer Ethics* *Mercoledì 10 novembre 2010 ore 18 -- 20* (2° mercoledì del mese) Corso Trento 21, Torino (primo piano) Ingresso libero Live streaming: http://nexa.polito.it/events A partire dal volume di Deborah Johnson e "What is Computer Ethics?" di James Moor (1985), il campo degli studi sull'etica del computer e dell'informazione è divenuto in pochi anni uno dei settori interdisciplinari più interessanti della ricerca scientifica contemporanea. I temi vanno dalla responsabilità dei programmatori (e utenti) di calcolatori, all'ambito del lavoro e della vita privata, con questioni di copyright e protezione dati personali, etica professionale, sicurezza, computer crimes e globalizzazione, fino a uno dei motivi originali di "computer ethics" come etica applicata all'ingegneria (secondo l'ispirazione del corso di Computer Ethics istituito nel 2008 presso il Politecnico di Torino). Dopo 25 anni di ricerca, oltre ai bilanci, si tratta di saggiare l'odierno stato dell'arte in rapporto a diversi problemi quali il futuro di internet e il web semantico, l'intelligenza artificiale e la robotica, il design, i cyborg o il post-umano. Si tratta infatti dell'insieme di problemi difficilmente riconducibili alla tradizione etica occidentale e che appunto, da un quarto di secolo, gli studiosi affrontano all'insegna dell'etica del computer e dell'informazione. Ne discuteranno Norberto Patrignani (esperto di /Computer Ethics/) e Ugo Pagallo (docente di Filosofia del diritto) confrontandosi con Juan Carlos De Martin e Marco Ricolfi, co-direttori del Centro NEXA, nonché con i fellows, lo staff e tutti coloro i quali vorranno intervenire nel dibattito. *Biografie:* *Norberto Patrignani* è docente di "Computer Ethics" alla Scuola di dottorato del Politecnico di Torino e di "ICT & Società dell'informazione" all'Università Cattolica di Milano. Collabora con la Commissione europea (DG Science & Society) ed è responsabile della sezione Etica dell'IT al Centro Studi Politeia di Milano. Laureatosi con lode in Informatica presso l'Università degli studi di Torino, dal 1974 al 1999 ha lavorato ad Ivrea alla Ricerca & Sviluppo Olivetti. Dal 1999 al 2004 è stato Senior Research Analyst per META Group. *Ugo Pagallo* è ordinario di Filosofia del diritto alla facoltà di Giurisprudenza dell'Università di Torino; Faculty del Center for Transnational Legal Studies (CTLS) di Londra, e Faculty Fellow Nexa.
