Neubot 0.4.12 released http://neubot.org/neubot-0.4.12 Version 0.4.12 is the latest generally-available stable release of Neubot, distributed for Ubuntu >= 10.04, MacOSX >= 10.6, Windows >= XP SP3, FreeBSD and ArchLinux, as well as in source format. Here's what changed in less than 140 characters: IPv6 support, robustness wrt master server failure, ArchLinux package, preparatory work for more tests, cleanups, and bugfixes. Install, upgrade instructions at <http://www.neubot.org/download>. Read on for more details. This release contains 181 commits by 6 authors. The diffstat says: 129 changed files with 3,193 additions and 2,191 deletions. Here is the list of what changed and why: - IPv6 support. A lot of work has been performed to get Neubot ready for World IPv6 day <http://www.worldipv6launch.org/>. I'm still a bit skeptic that "this time is for real". Anyway working to prepare Neubot for that has been really challenging. Thanks to the M-Lab folks for prodding and discussion, and thank you also to ipv6.polito.it folks, that provided me with an IPv6 machine. - Support for ArchLinux. Written and contributed by Davide Allavena, with tweaks from Roberto D'Auria. Packages should be made available via AUR <http://aur.archlinux.org/> soon. - Robustness with respect to master server failure. Waiting for more radical changes that will make Neubot fully distributed, I've tweaked the code to rely on two master servers: the traditional one ("master.neubot.org") and a new backup ("master2.neubot.org"). Hence, if the master is down for some reason, the backup could be used. - Preparatory work for more tests. In the interest of making tests fully comparable, I've tweaked BitTorrent and speedtest test engines to allow for more, different tests. The BitTorrent engine now implements one version of the test (version "2") that looks like an HTTP download, and another version (version "3") that sends one request at a time, hence being more similar, in behavior, to a typical BitTorrent client (which typically does not pipeline requests to the same peer, as the current test does). Similarly, I've started working on the speedtest engine. Tweaking it to run a test similar to BitTorrent version "2". The piece that is missing is to implement into speedtest engine something similar to BitTorrent version "3" above. This is something I am working on, and hopefully it will be ready in one or two releases. Since this is experimental work, it is disabled by default: test engines behave exactly as they behaved before this change was implemented. Nonetheless, I decided to commit this piece of work, so that I can run experiments more easily. When this piece of work will be ready, Neubot will routinely run different versions of each test. And will offer comparison between versions that are specifically designed to be compared, e.g. version 2 of speedtest with version 2 of BitTorrent. - Enhancements. - Unify /api/bittorrent and /api/speedtest into /api/results. Written and contributed by Marco Scopesi. This is part of an ongoing effort to specify more clearly the API and refactor the web user interface. In particular, the refactoring will allow to autogenerate on-the-fly the result page for each test. In turn, this will be particularly relevant when more than one version of each test will be available, as mentioned above. - Improve the wording of update.html. Written by Felipe Busnello. The page text now clarifies that autoupdates for Windows are available but disabled by default. (They are disabled by default because signature verification of updates it not implemented yet. See the release announce of 0.4.11 for more information on this topic.) - Many log.py cleanups. Quest pursued by Marco Scopesi, who is performing a great work at simplifying and rationalizing the logger subsystem. Pieces of this work have been committed in this release, while other pieces are still under testing and will be likely included in next release. - Fix for IE8 plot bug. Joint work with Alessio Palmero Aprosio. With a bit of patience we found a development version of jqplot that works both with Internet Explorer 8 and decent web browsers (including Internet Explorer 9, who seems to be much better than its ancestor). - Merged more documentation into FAQs. Work done in part by me and in part by Davide Allavena. The ongoing effort in this area is to merge all existing documentation into the FAQs. Having everything in one single place allows for easier maintenance. - More bug fixes, enhancements and cleanups. Celebrazione del Pubblico Dominio 2012 *Conferenza spettacolo* *Martedì 5 giugno 2012, ore 17.30* *Salone d'Onore, Castello del Valentino -- Viale Mattioli, 39, Torino* Il Sistema Bibliotecario del Politecnico di Torino <http://www.biblio.polito.it/>, il Centro Nexa su Internet & Società del Politecnico di Torino (DAUIN) <http://nexa.polito.it/> , MuseoTorino <http://www.museotorino.it/>, Biblioteche Civiche Torinesi <http://www.comune.torino.it/cultura/biblioteche/index/index.shtml> e Fondazione Teatro Nuovo Torino <http://www.teatronuovo.torino.it/> presentano una conferenza-spettacolo, evento conclusivo delle iniziative promosse per la celebrazione del Pubblico Dominio 2012. Si tratta dell'ultima tappa di una collaborazione che ha visto i giovani attori del Liceo teatrale e del Corso Professionale Attori della Fondazione Teatro Nuovo presentare agli studenti del Politecnico*la rivisitazione dei testi di James Joyce, Gaetano Mosca, Virginia Woolf, Luigi Natoli e Amalia Guglielminetti, alcuni dei grandi scrittori entrati quest'anno nel pubblico dominio, ai settant'anni dalla loro scomparsa*. Gli spettacoli sono stati proposti con la modalità del flash mob in biblioteca: una sorpresa che ha destato curiosità e interesse tra i ragazzi impegnati tra appunti e tesine. *Nell'evento del 5 giugno verranno riproposti 4 dei 7 corti teatrali realizzati*: due corti tratti da opere della Woolf e di Natoli, l'interpretazione della favola di Joice "Il gatto e il diavolo" e "Che cosa è la mafia" di Gaetano Mosca, scritto del 1900 ma ancora molto attuale, anche alla luce dei recenti fatti di cronaca e del ventennale delle stragi di mafia. *Verranno inoltre proiettati i trailer dei video girati durante i flash mob*. Per condividere i risultati e lo spirito dell'iniziativa, è stato creato un sito internet visitabile alla pagina http://www.biblio.polito.it/eventi/flashmob/, in cui è possibile consultare le biografie e le bibliografie di scrittori e artisti in pubblico dominio nel 2012, accedere a link in cui trovare materiale gratuito scaricabile online, visitare il catalogo del Sistema bibliotecario del Politecnico per sapere dove trovare i volumi degli autori. http://blogs.ec.europa.eu/neelie-kroes/netneutrality/ La mia prima reazione a caldo è che sia una decisione sbagliata per almeno quattro motivi principali: 1. sottostima le capacità dei consumatori non solo di ottenere le informazioni necessarie, ma anche e soprattutto di capire le implicazioni potenziali delle proprie scelte; 2. sottostima le difficoltà (certamente in Italia, ma mi stupirebbe se fossimo gli unici) di cambiare ISP: se lo switch ha un costo sostanziale (e ce l'ha), come si fa a costruire l'intera decisione sulla possibilità di "votare coi propri piedi"? 3. per non parlare che in aree rurali, o anche solo in città non grandi, l'offerta di ISP, dove c'è, è limitata; 4. per non parlare infine, che gli ISP non sono tutti uguali, tranne l'eventuale differenza "full internet" / "limited Internet" (che per me è un ossimoro, ma ci siamo capiti): le loro caratteristiche sono multi-dimensionali. Come farà l'utente, per di più non super evoluto (vedi punto 1), a confrontare l'ISP veloce ma "limited Internet" con l'ISP lento ma "full Internet"? E confrontare i vari "limited Internet" tra di loro? Se c'e' un settore dove l'asimmetria informativa, per non parlare della più bizantina offerta commerciale, regna sovrana sono le TLC e la Commissaria Kroes dovrebbe saperlo. Se si pensa di risolvere questi quattro problemi ex post, good luck with that. E' purtroppo facile prevedere le conseguenze di questa scelta della Commissaria Kroes: la maggioranza degli utenti opterà per il servizio a prezzo minore (che, c'e' da scommetterci, nel giro di un 1-2 anni costerà come quello "full" di adesso...), purchè gli venga garantito Facebook, email, e YouTube.... juan carlos

The European construction is at a crossroads. Faced with a major global crisis that challenges its very existence, it must redefine itself by adopting new directions for its policies. These orientations can no longer be expressed negatively, as the avoidance of war, or as the rejection of National egoisms. They must install a new positive agenda, in which European citizens, and in particular the youth, can recognize what they have already started to build, and which they can trust as enabling them to build it further. While the finance-dominated economy is sinking and pulling societies downwards, citizens, advocacy groups and intellectuals have started building new agendas. There will be many paths opened, and this text explores but one of them: the recognition that in the digital era, a huge share of knowledge production, cultural creativity and public expression occurs in a non-market sphere, where the products of activities are placed under commons statutes.
