Linux Day 2014: relatori cercasi

La quattordicesima edizione del Linux Day, che si svolgera' sabato 25 ottobre, vuole essere una occasione per estendere il tema canonico della manifestazione nazionale - il software libero ed opensource - e coinvolgere le altre comunita' legate alle liberta' digitali nelle loro diverse espressioni. E' stato lanciato pertanto l'appello a coloro che vogliono candidarsi come relatori presso uno dei 100+ eventi che annualmente compongono l'iniziativa, per illustrare e spiegare gli universi paralleli di Wikipedia, delle Creative Commons, di OpenStreetMap, dell'Open Hardware e altro ancora. Chi volesse prendere parte attiva alla manifestazione puo' compilare questo form http://www.linuxday.it/2014/candidati i cui dati saranno prossimamente condivisi con gli organizzatori delle istanza locali del Linux Day, al fine di facilitare il reciproco contatto. Sure, you could say that about any week on the Internet. But last week delivered some prime material. Check out this gamer exploding in fury at the rumor that Google --- "The King Midas of Shit!" --- might buy the hugely popular streaming gamer site Twitch TV. Or this sad note from the founder of the venerable "community weblog" MetaFilter explaining why a Google-precipitated decline in advertising revenue had forced him to lay off three much beloved staffers. Or this diatribe from a Facebook manager, savaging the current state of the media. All is not well on the Web. While the particulars of each outburst of consternation and anger vary significantly, a common theme connects them all: The relentless corporatization and centralization of control over Internet discourse is obviously not serving the public interest. The good stuff gets co-opted, bought out, or is reduced to begging for spare change on the virtual street corner. The best minds of our generation have been destroyed by web metrics, dragging themselves across a vast wasteland in search of the next clickbait headline. The man had just been fired for getting poor ratings from passengers. But as a private contractor, like every other driver for the app based transportation network, he had no recourse to the company. Even worse, the man and his wife had sunk $39,000 of their own money into buying an SUV for the express purpose of him driving for Uber. Ajema recalls the man being on the verge of tears. What could he do? Two Sundays ago, a couple hundred Uber drivers provided an answer, by forming a labor group with the help of the local Teamsters union, called the App-Based Drivers Association. The group won't have the full powers of a union, for instance leadership can't vote to make its entire membership strike. Google launches 'right to be forgotten' webform for removal requests Company responds to EU court ruling empowering citizens to have certain links about them deleted from search results Google has launched a webpage where European citizens can request that links to information about them be taken off search results, the first step to comply with a court ruling affirming the "right to be forgotten". The company, which processes more than 90% of all web searches in Europe, has made available a webform through which people can submit their requests but has stopped short of specifying when it will remove links that meet the criteria for being taken down.
