I can't leave because my patient is holding my hand, or because she's telling me, not for the first time, about when Aunt Mabel cut off all her hair and they called her a boy at school, or how her daddy lost his job and the lights went out and her mother lit pine cones and danced and made everyone laugh. Sometimes I can't leave because she just has to show me one thing, but getting to that thing requires that she rise unsteadily from her chair, negotiate her walker through the narrow hallway, and find whatever it is in the dim light of her bedroom. I can, and do, write prescriptions for her many medical problems, but I have little to offer for the two conditions that dominate her days: loneliness and disability. She has a well-meaning, troubled daughter in a faraway state, a caregiver who comes twice a week, a friend who checks in on her periodically, and she gets regular calls from volunteers with the Friendship Line. It's not enough. Like most older adults, she doesn't want to be "locked up in one of those homes." What she needs is someone who is always there, who can help with everyday tasks, who will listen and smile. What she needs is a robot caregiver. We will be officially launching the Open Wireless Router today at the HOPE X (Hackers on Planet Earth) conference in New York City, aiming to bring aboard members of the hacker community. This release is a work in progress and is intended only for developers and people willing to deal with the bleeding edge. The software aims to do several things that existing routers don't do well---or don't do at all. We are beginning a journey that we hope will attract supporters and fellow travelers to help reach the following goals:1 Allow small business and home users to easily enable an open network, so guests and passersby can get an Internet connection if they need one, while keeping a password-locked WPA2 network for themselves and their friends or coworkers. Let you share a bounded portion of your bandwidth on the open network, so guest users cannot slow down your Internet connection or use a large portion of your monthly quota.2 Provide state-of-the-art network queuing, so most users can expect an improved Internet experience---especially with latency-sensitive applications---compared to what commonly available consumer grade routers are delivering today. Offer a minimalist, secure, and elegant Web user interface to set up and configure the router. Advanced, non-minimalist administrative options are accessible by SSH. Advance the state of the art in consumer Wi-Fi router security and begin turning back the growing tide of attacks against them. Most or all existing router software is full of XSS and CSRF vulnerabilities, and we want to change that. Include a secure software auto-update mechanism. In addition to making our lives more efficient, this smart world also presents us with an exciting political choice. If so much of our everyday behaviour is already captured, analysed and nudged, why stick with unempirical approaches to regulation? Why rely on laws when one has sensors and feedback mechanisms? If policy interventions are to be -- to use the buzzwords of the day -- "evidence-based" and "results-oriented," technology is here to help. L'iniziativa fa seguito ad alcuni incontri e seminari svolti proprio alla Camera dei deputati su questi temi. Anche in ambito internazionale vi sono stati recentemente significativi interventi al riguardo, tra cui ad esempio l'approvazione in Brasile della legge cosiddetta "Marco Civil" nell'aprile scorso, le sentenze della Corte di Giustizia dell'Unione europea dell'8 aprile e del 13 maggio 2014, la Raccomandazione del Consiglio d'Europa anch'essa dell'aprile scorso e la sentenza della Corte Suprema USA del 25 giugno. Tutto ciò si aggiunge naturalmente alle molte iniziative provenienti dalla società civile che in questi ultimi anni si sono mosse nella direzione della elaborazione di un vero e proprio "Internet Bill of rights". A far parte della Commissione di studio sono stati chiamati deputati attivi sui temi dell'innovazione tecnologica e dei diritti fondamentali, studiosi ed esperti, tra cui il professor Stefano Rodotà, operatori del settore e rappresentanti di associazioni. Le proposte che la Commissione elaborerà saranno sottoposte ad una consultazione pubblica per assicurare una partecipazione più larga possibile alla definizione di un testo finale. I primi risultati saranno sottoposti altresì all'attenzione dei partecipanti alla riunione interparlamentare sui diritti fondamentali che si terrà proprio alla Camera il 13 e 14 ottobre 2014 nel corso del semestre di presidenza italiana del Consiglio dell'Unione europea e che vedrà la partecipazione dei Parlamenti di tutti e 28 gli Stati membri dell'Unione europea. Le conclusioni del lavoro della Commissione saranno quindi messe a disposizione delle Commissioni permanenti della Camera. *Verizon made an enemy tonight* On a flight back to New York I read Level 3's assessment of the latest round of the Netflix vs Internet Provider debacle. The summarized version is that basically Netflix is slow because Verizon refuses to add capacity to peer with Level 3. Fixing the situation would cost Verizon on the order of a few thousand (that's right thousand) dollars. Level 3 is even willing to foot the bill. But Verizon refuses. *Is Netflix actually slow on Verizon Fios?* I wasn't sure how to test my Netflix speed. After a bit of googling I found an article by Wired on how to test your Netflix streaming speed. I followed their steps and I was shocked. The video on netflix actually shows you how fast it is streaming to you which is helpful for ddiagnostics. Here's the test video on Netflix for quick reference Keep in mind, I pay Verizon for 75 mbps down, 35 mbps up on my Fios connection. This Netflix video streams at 375 kbps (or 0.375 mbps -- 0.5% of the speed I pay for) at the fastest. I was shocked. Then I decided to try connecting to a VPN service to compare. Gentilissimi, abbiamo il piacere di informarvi che l'edizione 2015 dell'International Conference for E-Democracy and Open Government (CeDEM), che si terrà a Krems (Austria) dal 20 al 22 maggio, includerà per la prima volta una track sul tema dell'Open Access (chair: Federico Morando, Director of Research and Policy - Centro Nexa su Internet & Società). The Berlin Declaration, one of the milestones of the Open Access movement, states that Open Access contributions must satisfy two conditions: that “(...) a free, irrevocable, worldwide, right of access to, and a license to copy, use, distribute, transmit and display the work publicly and to make and distribute derivative works (...)” is granted by the author(s) and rights holder(s) of such contributions and that “A complete version of the work and all supplemental materials, including a copy of the permission as stated above, in an appropriate standard electronic format is deposited (and thus published) in at least one online repository using suitable technical standards (...)” supported by institutions that seek to enable “open access, unrestricted distribution, interoperability, and long-term archiving”.* *The track welcomes any innovative contribution concerning Open Access. *The Digital First Aid Kit -- Intro * The Digital First Aid Kit aims to provide preliminary support for people facing the most common types of digital threats. The Kit offers a set of self-diagnostic tools for human rights defenders, bloggers, activists and journalists facing attacks themselves, as well as providing guidelines for digital first responders to assist a person under threat. The Kit begins with ways to establish secure communication <https://digitaldefenders.org/digitalfirstaid/#section-secure-communication> when you or a contact are facing a digital threat and want to reach out for support. The Kit then moves on to sections on account hijacking <https://digitaldefenders.org/digitalfirstaid/#section-hijacking-accounts>, seizure of devices <https://digitaldefenders.org/digitalfirstaid/#section-devices-seized>, malware <https://digitaldefenders.org/digitalfirstaid/#section-malware> infections and DDoS attacks <https://digitaldefenders.org/digitalfirstaid/#section-ddos-mitigation>. Each section begins with a series of questions about you, your devices and your situation. These questions will guide you through a self-assessment or help a first responder better understand the challenges you are facing. It then lays out initial steps to understand and potentially fix the problems. The steps should also help you or a first responder to recognize when to request help from a specialist. *The Digital First Aid Kit is not meant to serve as the ultimate solution to all your digital emergencies.* It strives to give you tools that can help you make a first assessment of what is happening and determine if you can mitigate the problem on your own. If at any moment you feel uncomfortable or unsure about implementing any of the solutions outlined here, ask for help from trained professionals. The Digital First Aid Kit came about when a number of organizations working in the digital emergency field observed that once a person is targeted digitally, he or she often does not know what to do or where to turn for assistance. It was inspired by the belief that /everyone has the ability to take preventative measures to avoid emergencies and responsive steps when they are in trouble./ Further, everyone has the ability to help out a colleague facing trouble. The self-diagnostic quality of the Kit should also enable journalists, bloggers, activists and human rights defenders to understand what is happening to their digital assets, to be able to determine more rapidly when they should reach out for help, what kind of help they need, and improve individual digital safety.
