The reasons are as complex as the distortions, but distinctly missing from the discourse is critical engagement with the foundations and implications of the European data protection regime that gave flight to the discussion. Also missing is an exploration of the proposed course of action by Google and other players engaged in implementation, and an assessment of how those responses could be strengthened and improved. The Article 29 Working Party -- the advisory association of European data protection authorities that ought to be at the helm of navigating solutions -- has called Google and other search engines to a meeting in Brussels on 24 July to discuss the ruling and its concerns. *The best argument yet for net neutrality comes from Major League Baseball** * By John McDuling @jmcduling July 28, 2014 Among the more than one million comments about net neutrality received by the US government this year was a submission by... Major League Baseball (MLB). The US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is currently reviewing new rules that could allow internet providers to charge content companies for a more direct connection to customers. Some big content distributors (most notably, Netflix) have come out hard against these so-called "fast lanes," arguing that they effectively amount to an internet tax or toll. But MLB has become an important player in streaming video. As I wrote last month, an offshoot of the league, MLB Advanced Media (or BAM as it's known in the industry) is now America's largest distributor of live video on broadband networks. Earlier this month, BAM quietly submitted its own letter to the FCC, where it was equally scathing about internet fast lanes (hat tip to Multichannel's John Eggerton). It's a shame that BAM's comments have been overlooked, because they amount to one of the most coherent arguments in favor of net neutrality we have come across. For example: Fast lanes would serve only one purpose: for Broadband ISPs to receive an economic windfall. American consumers would be worse off as the costs of fast lanes are passed along to them in new fees or charges where there were none, or higher fees or charges where they existed. Tale appello è stato pienamente recepito nel cosiddetto decreto Art Bonus voluto dal ministro Franceschini (d.l. 83/2014). Una piccola "rivoluzione" che faceva dunque ben sperare. Ora si deve però, con tutta probabilità, passare a parlarne al tempo passato, a causa di un emendamento approvato alla Camera al momento della conversione in legge. È troppo sperare che nei prossimi giorni, nel passaggio al Senato, qualcuno si renda conto dell'errore commesso e abroghi questo emendamento?* Poco meno di un anno fa si erano esposte in questa <http://www.roars.it/online/riproduzione-di-beni-culturali-appello-al-minist…> e in altre sedi <http://www.claudiogiunta.it/2013/07/accesso-aperto-anche-per-il-materiale-f…> le ragioni di un appello al ministro per i Beni culturali per favorire una liberalizzazione nelle riproduzioni di beni culturali a fini di ricerca e studio, rielaborato e fatto proprio anche dalle maggiori associazioni nazionali di storici e archeologi <http://www.rm.unina.it/index.php?action=viewnews&news=1379082134>. Grazie al fattivo supporto dei presidenti del Consiglio superiore dei Beni culturali, prima Salvatore Settis e poi Giuliano Volpe, tale appello è stato pienamente recepito e trasformato in un comma del cosiddetto decreto Art Bonus voluto dal ministro Franceschini (d.l. 83/2014), come modifica al codice dei Beni culturali. Così recita il testo (art. 12, comma 3): Al fine di semplificare e razionalizzare le norme sulla riproduzione di beni culturali, al Codice dei beni culturali e del paesaggio, di cui al decreto legislativo n. 42 del 2004 e successive modificazioni, sono apportate le seguenti modifiche: a) al comma 3 dell'articolo 108 dopo la parola «pubblici» sono inserite le seguenti: «o privati» e dopo la parola «valorizzazione» sono inserite le seguenti: «, purché attuate senza scopo di lucro, neanche indiretto.»; b) all'articolo 108, dopo il comma 3, è aggiunto il seguente: «3-bis. Sono in ogni caso libere, al fine dell'esecuzione dei dovuti controlli, le seguenti attività, purché attuate senza scopo di lucro, neanche indiretto, per finalità di studio, ricerca, libera manifestazione del pensiero o espressione creativa, promozione della conoscenza del patrimonio culturale: 1) la riproduzione di beni culturali attuata con modalità che non comportino alcun contatto fisico con il bene, ne' l'esposizione dello stesso a sorgenti luminose, ne' l'uso di stativi o treppiedi; 2) la divulgazione con qualsiasi mezzo delle immagini di beni culturali, legittimamente acquisite, in modo da non poter essere ulteriormente riprodotte dall'utente se non, eventualmente, a bassa risoluzione digitale.». Varie interruzioni dei servizi IT nel periodo 6 - 17 agosto

Buongiorno, nel periodo compreso tra il 6 e il 17 agosto il Politecnico ha programmato varie attività di manutenzione elettrica e di rete. In particolare: - Mercoledì 6 agosto tra le 14:00 e le 19:00 potrebbero verificarsi delle brevi interruzioni dei servizi IT del Centro Nexa (siti Web e mailing list). Gli stessi servizi non saranno inoltre disponibili nei seguenti giorni: - Domenica 10 agosto dalle 7:00 alle 17:00 - Mercoledì 13 agosto dalle 7:00 alle 17:00. Più in generale, nel periodo 10 - 17 agosto, a causa di interruzioni della fornitura elettrica a varie zone del Politecnico potrebbero verificarsi altri malfunzionamenti non previsti. Sociologists understand groups as also anchored by identity, social location, and power relationships. It's a tension between groups of /affiliation/ versus /ascription/. The difference is meaningful for how we understand inequality across digital domains. How can we theoretically and methodologically understand both concepts of group in social media generally and specifically in a case study of informal learning spaces on Facebook and Twitter? About Tressie Tressie McMillan Cottom is completing her PhD in the Sociology Department at Emory University in Atlanta, GA. As a stratification scholar, Tressie considers what inequality means both experientially and empirically when corporations are people, supranational corporations like Facebook and Twitter shape the public square, and education is increasingly privatized. Her research primarily mines organizational arrangements and structural processes to better understand inequality across rapidly changing social domains. Her current work examines for-profit college credentials and inequality. She also has a developing research agenda that examines the political economy of emerging "new" media organizations.
