With nothing more technologically advanced than a phone, you can arrange to have delivered to your doorstep, often in less than an hour, takeaway food, your weekly groceries, alcohol, cigarettes, drugs (over-the-counter, prescription, proscribed), books, newspapers, a dozen eggs, half a dozen eggs, a single egg. I once had a single bottle of Coke sent to my home at the same price I would have paid had I gone to shop myself. The same goes for services. When I lived there, a man came around every morning to collect my clothes and bring them back crisply ironed the next day; he would have washed them, too, but I had a washing machine. These luxuries are not new. I took advantage of them long before Uber became a verb, before the world saw the first iPhone in 2007, even before the first submarine fibre-optic cable landed on our shores in 1997. In my hometown of Mumbai, we have had many of these conveniences for at least as long as we have had landlines—and some even earlier than that. Google abbandona Freebase in favore di Wikidata

When we publicly launched Freebase back in 2007, we thought of it as a "Wikipedia for structured data." So it shouldn't be surprising that we've been closely watching the Wikimedia Foundation's project Wikidata[1] since it launched about two years ago. We believe strongly in a robust community-driven effort to collect and curate structured knowledge about the world, but we now think we can serve that goal best by supporting Wikidata -- they’re growing fast, have an active community, and are better-suited to lead an open collaborative knowledge base. So we've decided to help transfer the data in Freebase to Wikidata, and in mid-2015 we’ll wind down the Freebase service as a standalone project. Freebase has also supported developer access to the data, so before we retire it, we’ll launch a new API for entity search powered by Google's Knowledge Graph. Online radicalization is not a fatality: our new article (and software)

Dear all, I'm pleased to announce that our new article has just been published in the latest issue of the Revue Française de Sociologie: --- How to build consensus in a health-oriented online community: modelling a “pro-ana” forum. Antonio A. Casilli, Juliette Rouchier & Paola Tubaro. Revue Française de Sociologie, vol. 55, n. 4, 2014, pp. 731-764. [in English, see links at the end of this email] --- The article presents the outcomes of our research project ANAMIA (http://www.anamia.fr/en/) By combining semi-structured interviews with computer simulations, it provides an answer to the question: Do online communities where controversial opinions are discussed tend to radicalize individuals and to spread dangerous behaviors? This topic has significant implications for fields such as politics, culture, and economics. We decided to focus on health – more precisely on eating disorders. There is a lesson for policy-makers in so-called "pro-ana forums", where paradoxical attitudes towards anorexia, bulimia and related disorders can lead to polarizing stances. Under which conditions do people living with eating disorders accept or refuse medical mediation, leading either to ‘pro-recovery’ or ‘pro-pathology’ orientations? After conducting a 3-year fieldwork and several in silico experiments via a specifically designed multi-agent model (ANAMIA_F), we come to some interesting conclusions. Our main outcome is that radicalization is not a fatality: it only happens under very specific circumstances. In determining such circumstances, initial attitudes (users being inherently more destructive or more moderate) matter less than actual online participation dynamics (participation rate and community turnover, both influenced negatively by censorship). These results can actually inform policies that are both efficient in promoting health behaviours and respectful of online freedom of speech. Ad esempio, trovate cinque libri di sociologia tra cui "Mariella Berra (a cura di), Cooperare per innovare, Rosemberg&Sellier 2014". Tutti i contenuti sono assolutamente free. Inoltre, è possibile attuare videoconferenze e videolezioni con lavagna interattiva e creare nuovi libri o documenti componendo il materiale già disponibile. Chi abbia già disponibile altro materiale è pregato di inviarmelo al fine di ampliare il portale. Ovviamente, ospitiamo solo materiale free.
