Ma siccome l’aereo era instabile, fu aggiunto un software per controllarlo, il quale però, in certe situazioni mandava l’aereo in stallo e in nose-dive. I progettisti lo sapevano, e avevano aggiunto un bottone sulla plancia, che i piloti potevano utilizzare per disabilitare il software. Ma per l’uso del bottone, occorreva che tutti i piloti si sottoponessero a un percorso di training che sarebbe durato mesi. A quel punto il CdA di Boeing decise di mettere l’aereo in commercio, senza dire nulla alla FAA. Dopo che accaddero due gravi incidenti mortali (346 persone) e si ricondusse la causa a questo software, i 737 Max vennero messi a terra per lungo tempo, causando ingenti danni economici alla Boeing. Un lungo processo si concluse dio recente con la condanna del CdA di Boeing. Il caso è molto illuminante su diversi aspetti che riguardano la tecnologia e il mercato: 1. Se l’Europa non avesse avuto il coraggio di creare il Consorzio Airbus, oggi avremmo un solo produttore di aerei, che da monopolista non avrebbe freni 2. La tecnologia europea può essere migliore di quella americana 3. La tecnologia non può essere mai perfetta, la responsabilità del suo uso rimane a chi sceglie di impiegarla 4. L’avidità economica è più foriera di danni della tecnologia stessa 5. La certificazione non è sufficiente a garantire l’affidabilità di un sistema: Boeing ha aggirato la FAA e comunque la FAA si sarebbe affidata a informazioni fornite da Boeing 6. Nessun software è verificabile, e non è solo una questione che riguarda l’AI, su cui si concentra la discussione attuale 7. Poiché nessun dispositivo complesso è affidabile, la prassi utilizzata è quella dei test più ampi possibili. Ma siccome nemmeno i test sono esaustivi, negli aerei si installano le scatole nere, che registrano tutto quanto avviene, in modo tale da poter analizzare le situazioni impreviste che hanno causato problemi. Dalle analisi si ricavano indicazioni su come modificare i sistemi. In informatica è comune e si chiama "error tracking and software update”. 8. Interessante segnalazione. Vorrei aggiungere un po’ di contesto. Col Deep Learning sono avvenuti ben 3 breakthrough nel settore del NLP in appena dieci anni: - word embeddings - all you need is attention (transformers) - transformers tuning I Transformer sono una forma avanzata di Language Model. Un LM è allenato a predire una o più parole coerenti a seguire un inizio di frase o all’interno di una frase (Masked Language Model). Non sono istruiti a svolgere nessun altro compito al di fuori di questo. I Large Language Models (LLM), come GPT-3 dimostrano di saper produrre testi di senso compiuto a volte sorprendenti, e sono stati soggetti di numerosa attenzione nei media. Poiché incorporano la sintesi di enormi quantità di testi su cui sono stati allenati, possono essere utilizzati come base di partenza per allenare modelli per svolgere altri task: machine translation, question answering, opinion mining, ecc. usando una relativamente piccola porzione di dati annotati per quel precipuo task. Con questa tecnica, detta fine tuning, i transformer sono riusciti a battere lo stato dell’arte in tutti i task di NLP (vedasi i benchmark GLUE che ne raggruppa una ventina). Siccome i LLM sono appunto allenati a completare delle frasi, si è scoperto che possono svolgere direttamente questi task, semplicemente specificandolo nel prompt. Questo ha dato l’origine al prompt tuning, ossia allo studio del prompt più adatto a specificare un task, senza necessità di fare un ulteriore tuning dei modelli. Quella che era una curiosità è diventata oggetto di studio, anche se è chiaro che non ci si possono aspettare miracoli da sistemi progettati per altri scopi. Si può scoprire che una pinza può essere usata per battere chiodi, ma un martello funzionerà sempre meglio. I ricercatori si sono posti il problema di capire quante e quali conoscenze siano in realtà incorporate in questi modelli ed è nato un campo di investigazione chiamato BERTology (da BERT, il primo transformer). C’è chi addirittura ha sostenuto che alcuni modelli siano dotati di autocoscienza, cosa che i più seri studiosi del campo si sono affrettati a smentire. I LLM non hanno nessuna capacità di inferenza e i testi che producono o le risposte che gli si chiedano non sempre hanno una qualche coerenza logica. Resta il fatto che la tecnologia dei LLM, che sta riversandosi in altri campi, come la generazione di immagini con DaLL-E, sta diventando un nuovo settore di investigazione, denominato Foundation Models e costutuisce uno dei più promettenti settori di sviluppo dell’AI. Nessuno è perfetto ma presentare esempi aneddotici di non perfetto funzionamento della tecnologia è uno sport di bassa lega e che tende a gettare discredito o a sminuire il valore di ricerche di altissimo valore scientifico e di straordinaria rilevanza tecnologica. Il vero problema dei LLM è che richiedono enormi risorse di calcolo per la loro costruzione e solo le poche grandi aziende tecnologiche private si possono permettere. Meta/Facebook si è offerta di mettere a disposizione Open Source il suo modello OPT-175, che ha la stessa dimensione di GPT-3, ma poi le risorse per eventualmente modificarlo uno se le deve procurare da solo. L’unica strada alternativa è quella lanciata da HuggingFace col progetto BigScience Model Training, che cerca di coinvolgere la comunità in un progetto condiviso, di scala come l’LHC del CERN, nella costruzione di LLM. Se la comunità scientifica non vuole restare tagliata fuori dai progressi in questo settore, dovrebbe tornare a chiedere la creazione di un CERN for AI (claire-ai.org) e investimenti in infrastrutture pubbliche per la ricerca fondazionale in AI. But the rapid rise in voice assistants, including Google Home, Amazon Alexa and Apple’s Siri could, new research suggests, have a long-term impact on children’s social and cognitive development, specifically their empathy, compassion and critical thinking skills. “The multiple impacts on children include inappropriate responses, impeding social development and hindering learning opportunities,” said Anmol Arora, co-author of research published in the journal Archives of Disease in Childhood. A key concern is that children attribute human characteristics and behaviour to devices that are, said Arora, “essentially a list of trained words and sounds mashed together to make a sentence.” The children anthropomorphise and then emulate the devices, copying their failure to alter their tone, volume, emphasis or intonation. Another issue is the machines’ lack of automatic expectation for children to say please or thank you. Devices are also limited in the types of questions they can respond to. “As a result,” Arora said. “Children are going to be learning very narrow forms of questioning and always in the form of a demand.” There are also problems with recognising different accents. “If a child is particularly young, they might well not be able to pronounce particular words properly and then there’s a risk their words might be misinterpreted and they’re exposed to something inappropriate,” he said, citing an example where a 10-year-old girl was exposed to an online challenge where she was told to touch a live electric plug with a coin. “These devices don’t understand what they’re saying,” he said. “All they’re doing is regurgitating some information in response to a narrow query, which it might have misunderstood anyway, without any real understanding of safety or who’s listening to it.” Dr Ádám Miklósi, who recently published a study showing that use of smartphones and tablets are ‘rewiring’ children’s brains with long-term effects, called the research “important” and said more needed to be done to get companies to take the issue seriously. “At the moment, these devices are very primitive because the people who develop them don’t care about human interaction or their impact on children’s development,” he said. “They know how adults use these devices but the way children use them, and the impact they have on children, is very different,” he added. “We need a lot more research, as well as ethical guidelines for their use by children” But Dr Caroline Fitzpatrick, the Canada Research Chair in Digital Media Use by Children and Its Implications for Promoting Togetherness: An Ecosystemic Approach, said she thought there was little cause for concern. “It’s true that children need rich context and cues to learn and develop vocabulary which at present, they can’t get through interactions with technology because it only provides very minimal information and tools and context,” she said. “A child who was already timid or who spent too much time on their device might develop lower quality social skills and social competence than their peers, as well as difficulty using basic politeness formulations and poor non-verbal communication skills – such as interrupting and not making eye contact,” she said. “Those children would have lower quality relationships with their peers, teachers and family members and increased social isolation. “But as long as parents keep to the recommended limits for children, and they’re getting a healthy amount of interaction from their caregivers and peers, then I don’t think there should be cause for alarm,” she added.
