South American nations open fire on ICANN for 'illegal and unjust' sale of .amazon to zillionaire Jeff Bezos

Eight South American governments have vowed to make life difficult for DNS overseer ICANN after it gave the .amazon top-level domain to the US tech giant headed by Jeff Bezos. In a letter [PDF] sent on Friday, the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (ACTO) responded badly to a missive from ICANN’s president saying it was going ahead with adding the address to the global internet. Calling the decision “illegal and unjust,” as well as an “act of force,” it criticizes ICANN’s “attempts to legitimize a decision that was not taken under legitimate circumstances nor for legitimate reasons,” and vows vague revenge by “disseminating news of this situation to all relevant groups.” That angry response is one that ICANN has gone out of its way trying to avoid but, ironically, ended up inviting due to its attempts to drag out the process. It has been eight years since Amazon applied for its namesake generic top-level domain (gTLD) and, initially, the application passed all the checks and was approved, as were more than a thousand others. But following revelations from Edward Snowden about mass surveillance by the US government, which included tapping the mobile phone of the-then president of Brazil, the Brazilian government started raising objections and was joined by other South American legislatures. Those governments used an inter-governmental process to formally object to .amazon and ICANN responded by putting the application in legal limbo, presumably in the hope that Amazon would walk away. But they had reckoned without the online giant’s determination and, after spending years and millions of dollars going through ICANN’s review process, the tech giant emerged triumphant in 2017. Licklider* di una nuova connessione profonda tra uomini e computer che anticipava di quasi dieci anni Internet. Si tratta di un tema dibattuto nell’ambito degli studi di *Intelligenza Artificiale, Computer Vision, Scienze cognitive e Biologia sintetica,* tra gli altri. Ma si tratta anche di una *questione filosofica* che implica un ripensamento del rapporto tra mente, corpo, ambiente e macchine. Ciao, penso che questo documento proposto da DIEM25 - Democracy in Europe Movement 2025 - ai suoi iscritti e alle sue iscritte affinché diventi parte della proposta politica ufficiale del movimento, possa essere di interesse per la lista. Essendo prevalentemente focalizzato su ICT, vi si affrontano molti dei temi discussi qui facendo delle proposte politiche piuttosto concrete in proposito. Viene data molto importanza a produttori e produttrici di dati (modo in cui vengono rinominati gli e le utenti di social network) e alla possibilità di loro organizzazione in Data Unions, così come alla richiesta di agevolare lo slivuppo di Data Commons e di piattaforme cooperative. Il tutto viene poi collegato alla proposta di universal basic dividend, cioé il salario di base proposto da DIEM25. Inoltre, l'AI viene rinominata ADM, cioé automated decision-making, "AI”), "because the use of this concept helps much better to clearly set out the issue: how are those auto-mated decisions made? And who decides how they are made?" Ampie parti del documento trattano poi la questione della proprietà intellettuale. Oltre a questi punti, che riguardano il contenuto, mi sembra interessante notare una cosa, che mi sembra una novità in un documento poitico: l'uso di "personas" - cioé di una tecnica generalmente usata nella progettazione di sistemi interattivi - al fine di dare una idea di cosa si intende e quali trasformazioni il documento prevede. But that method requires direct access to the phone which would ordinarily tip off the user, who is often the subject of the investigation. Apple’s iCloud, on the other hand, can be searched in secret. In the first half of last year, the period covered by Apple’s most recent semiannual transparency report on requests for data it receives from government agencies, U.S. authorities armed with regular court papers asked for and obtained full device backups or other iCloud content in 1,568 cases, covering about 6,000 accounts. The company said it turned over at least some data for 90% of the requests it received. It turns over data more often in response to secret U.S. intelligence court directives, which sought content from more than 18,000 accounts in the first half of 2019, the most recently reported six-month period. Had it proceeded with its plan, Apple would not have been able to turn over any readable data belonging to users who opted for end-to-end encryption. Instead of protecting all of iCloud with end-to-end encryption, Apple has shifted to focus on protecting some of the most sensitive user information, such as saved passwords and health data.
