The intended purpose of a two-way talk function on the devices is to allow parents to check in on their children. More at 6 on #WMC5 pic.twitter.com/77xCekCnB0 December 10, 2019 The concerns are about the Ring, an Amazon-owned home security device which had an estimated value of between $1.2bn and $1.8bn in 2018. Reports about hackers infiltrating the system and using it to interact with children and families have been dismissed by Ring as unrelated to the company’s cybersecurity. Despite early investigations into how the device might be exploited, and a Motherbroard investigation which unearthed online forums where hackers discussed how to break into Ring accounts connected to the cameras, a Ring spokesperson told the Guardian: “We have no evidence of an unauthorized intrusion or compromise of Ring’s systems or network.” In the statement given to the Guardian, a spokesperson for Ring said that customer trust was important to Ring, and that “we take the security of our devices seriously”, before adding that customers should be more cautious over their personal information: “Consumers should always practice good password hygiene and we encourage Ring customers to change their passwords and enable two-factor authentication,” the statement said. In November, Senator Ed Markey of Massachusetts criticized Ring for being “an open door for privacy and civil liberty violations”. Amazon has been accused of incentivizing police forces to use Ring products, for example, by donating 15 cameras to a police department in Lakeland, Florida. Ring has partnered with 405 police forces across the country, according to a Vice investigation.

China is encouraging digitization to streamline case-handling within its sprawling court system using cyberspace and technologies like blockchain and cloud computing, the country’s Supreme People’s Court said in a new policy paper. The efforts include a “mobile court” offered on popular social media platform WeChat that has already handled more than 3 million legal cases or other judicial procedures since its launch in March, according to the Supreme People’s Court. The paper was released this past week as judicial authorities gave journalists a glimpse inside a “cybercourt” — the country’s first — established in 2017 in the eastern city of Hangzhou to deal with legal disputes that have a digital aspect. In a demonstration, authorities showed how the Hangzhou Internet Court operates, featuring an online interface in which litigants appear by video chat while an AI judge — complete with on-screen avatar — prompts them to present their cases. “Does the defendant have any objection to the nature of the judicial blockchain evidence submitted by the plaintiff?” the black-robed virtual judge, sitting under China’s national emblem, asked in a pre-trial meeting. “No objection,” a human plaintiff answered. Cases that are handled at the Hangzhou court include online trade disputes, copyright cases and e-commerce product liability claims. Litigants can register their civil complaints online and later log on for their court hearing. Putting simple functions like that in the hands of the virtual judge helps ease the burden on human justices, who monitor the proceedings and make the major rulings in each case, officials said. The digitization push is partly to help courts keep up with a growing caseload created by mobile payments and e-commerce in China, which has the world’s largest number of mobile internet users at around 850 million. “(Concluding cases) at a faster speed is a kind of justice, because justice delayed is justice denied,” Hangzhou Internet Court Vice President Ni Defeng said. Ni added that the use of blockchain technology is particularly useful, helping to streamline and create clearer records of the legal process. Since the Hangzhou court’s establishment, China has set up similar chambers in Beijing and the southern metropolis of Guangzhou. Together they have accepted a total of 118,764 cases and concluded 88,401, the Supreme People’s Court said. The “mobile court” option on WeChat — China’s leading social-media messaging platform — allows users to complete case filings, hearings and evidence exchange without physically appearing in court. And the goal will be to have Twitter conform to that standard. "Twitter is funding a small independent team of up to five open source architects, engineers, and designers to develop an open and decentralized standard for social media. The goal is for Twitter to ultimately be a client of this standard," Dorsey tweeted. Twitter's CTO Parag Agrawal will be leading the team, which will be called Bluesky. Dorsey highlighted some of the problems that the current swathe of centralized social media sites face, such as addressing misleading information. He also said that many of these sites promote controversy rather than healthy conversation. This could be summed up as some of the problems of Web2—the current Web we use today. Instead he pointed to the principle of decentralization, and key technologies, such as blockchain, as the solution. These are generally seen as the building blocks of Web3. "Finally, new technologies have emerged to make a decentralized approach more viable. Blockchain points to a series of decentralized solutions for open and durable hosting, governance, and even monetization. Much work to be done, but the fundamentals are there," he said. However, Dorsey acknowledged there will be a tough road ahead.
