In the context of two European projects, namely 3cixty <https://www.3cixty.com> and PasTime <http://www.pas-time.org>, both supported by the European Institute of Innovation & Technology (EIT), we have envisioned and experimented with a forward looking approach towards *the automated personalization of travel offerings*. Leveraging a data deluge of crowdsourced travelers’ data city whereabouts, dedicated city data catalogues of points of interest and events, travelers’ past bookings and travel choices, we have streamlined a fully automated pipeline of data collection and integration, semantic graph materialization, and travel recommendations, bridging the gap between data automation and final customer consumption. Press Release: Privacy International launches international campaign for greater transparency around secretive intelligence sharing activities between governments

Chissà se risponderà... <https://medium.com/@privacyint/press-release-privacy-international-launches…> Privacy International, in partnership with 30+ national human rights organisations, has today written <https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/3990963-PS-US-Open-Letter-on-Intell…> to national intelligence oversight bodies in over 40 countries seeking information on the intelligence sharing activities of their governments. Countries may use secret intelligence sharing arrangements to circumvent international and domestic rules on direct surveillance. These arrangements can also lead to the exchange of information that can facilitate human rights abuses, particularly in countries with poor human rights records or weak rule of law. National intelligence oversight bodies hold intelligence agencies accountable to the public by exercising scrutiny over the legality, propriety, effectiveness, and efficiency of the intelligence activities of their governments. The countries written to include the Five Eyes Alliance <https://privacyinternational.org/node/1480>, which is a secretive, global surveillance arrangement between the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. The letter was also sent to nearly all of the countries forming surveillance partnerships that have grown from the Five Eyes: the Nine-Eyes (the Five Eyes plus Denmark, France, the Netherlands and Norway), the 14-Eyes (the Nine-Eyes plus Belgium, Germany, Italy, Spain and Sweden), and the 43-Eyes (the 14-Eyes plus the 2010 members of the International Security Assistance Forces to Afghanistan <http://www.nato.int/cps/en/natohq/topics_69366.htm>). Specifically, PI and national human rights organisations are seeking more information about whether these national oversight bodies: · Are informed about the intelligence sharing activities of their governments; · Can independently oversee the intelligence sharing activities of their governments; · Can access all relevant information about the intelligence sharing activities of their governments; · Can review decisions by their governments to share intelligence and/or conduct independent investigations into the intelligence sharing activities of their governments; and · Cooperate with other oversight bodies to supervise the intelligence sharing activities of their governments. A deadline of 31 October 2017 has been given for each national oversight body to respond. PI has created an interactive map <https://privacyinternational.carto.com/builder/28fccac2-3349-46e5-91bd-fd67…>, which illustrates the countries included in the campaign and the national intelligence oversight bodies that have been contacted in each country. The map will be updated when responses are received. *The EU Suppressed a 300-Page Study That Found Piracy Doesn’t Harm Sales** * Jennings Brown Yesterday 3:10pm The European Commission paid €360,000 (about $428,000) for a study on how piracy impacts the sales of copyrighted music, books, video games, and movies. But the EU never shared the report—possibly because it determined that there is no evidence that piracy is a major problem. The Dutch firm Ecory was commissioned to research the impact of piracy for several months, eventually submitting a 304-page report to the EU in May 2015. The report concluded that: “In general, the results do not show robust statistical evidence of displacement of sales by online copyright infringements. That does not necessarily mean that piracy has no effect but only that the statistical analysis does not prove with sufficient reliability that there is an effect.” The report found that illegal downloads and streams can actually boost legal sales of games, according to the report. Passwords For 540,000 Car Tracking Devices Leaked Online

Login credentials of more than half a million records belonging to vehicle tracking device company SVR Tracking have leaked online, potentially exposing the personal data and vehicle details of drivers and businesses using its service. Just two days ago, Viacom was found exposing the keys to its kingdom <http://thehackernews.com/2017/09/viacom-amazon-server.html> on an unsecured Amazon S3 server, and this data breach is yet another example of storing sensitive data on a misconfigured cloud server. The Kromtech Security Center was first to discover <https://mackeepersecurity.com/post/auto-tracking-company-leaks-hundreds-of-…> a wide-open, public-facing misconfigured Amazon Web Server (AWS) S3 cloud storage bucket containing a cache belonging to SVR that was left publicly accessible for an unknown period. Stands for Stolen Vehicle Records, the SVR Tracking service allows its customers to track their vehicles in real time by attaching a physical tracking device to vehicles in a discreet location, so their customers can monitor and recover them in case their vehicles are stolen. The leaked cache contained details of roughly 540,000 SVR accounts, including email addresses and passwords, as well as users' vehicle data, like VIN (vehicle identification number), IMEI numbers of GPS devices. Since the leaked passwords were stored using SHA-1, a 20-years-old weak cryptographic hash function that was designed by the US National Security Agency (NSA), which can be cracked with ease. The leaked database also exposed 339 logs that contained photographs and data about vehicle status and maintenance records, along with a document with information on the 427 dealerships that use SVR's tracking services. Interestingly, the exposed database also contained information where exactly in the car the physical tracking unit was hidden. According to Kromtech, the total number of devices exposed "could be much larger given the fact that many of the resellers or clients had large numbers of devices for tracking." Since SVR's car tracking device monitors a vehicle everywhere for the past 120 days, anyone with access to SVR users' login credentials could both track a vehicle in real time and create a detailed log of every location the vehicle has visited using any internet connected device like a desktop, laptop, mobile phone or tablet. That number, the company’s preferred ‘metric’ when measuring its own size, means two billion different people used Facebook in the preceding month. It is hard to grasp just how extraordinary that is. Bear in mind that thefacebook – its original name – was launched exclusively for Harvard students in 2004. No human enterprise, no new technology or utility or service, has ever been adopted so widely so quickly. The speed of uptake far exceeds that of the internet itself, let alone ancient technologies such as television or cinema or radio. Also amazing: as Facebook has grown, its users’ reliance on it has also grown. The increase in numbers is not, as one might expect, accompanied by a lower level of engagement. More does not mean worse – or worse, at least, from Facebook’s point of view. On the contrary. In the far distant days of October 2012, when Facebook hit one billion users, 55 per cent of them were using it every day. At two billion, 66 per cent are. Its user base is growing at 18 per cent a year – which you’d have thought impossible for a business already so enormous. Facebook’s biggest rival for logged-in users is YouTube, owned by its deadly rival Alphabet (the company formerly known as Google), in second place with 1.5 billion monthly users. Three of the next four biggest apps, or services, or whatever one wants to call them, are WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram, with 1.2 billion, 1.2 billion, and 700 million users respectively (the Chinese app WeChat is the other one, with 889 million). Those three entities have something in common: they are all owned by Facebook. No wonder the company is the fifth most valuable in the world, with a market capitalisation of $445 billion. Zuckerberg’s news about Facebook’s size came with an announcement which may or may not prove to be significant. He said that the company was changing its ‘mission statement’, its version of the canting pieties beloved of corporate America. Facebook’s mission used to be ‘making the world more open and connected’. A non-Facebooker reading that is likely to ask: why? Connection is presented as an end in itself, an inherently and automatically good thing. Is it, though? Flaubert was sceptical about trains because he thought (in Julian Barnes’s paraphrase) that ‘the railway would merely permit more people to move about, meet and be stupid.’ You don’t have to be as misanthropic as Flaubert to wonder if something similar isn’t true about connecting people on Facebook. For instance, Facebook is generally agreed to have played a big, perhaps even a crucial, role in the election of Donald Trump. The benefit to humanity is not clear. This thought, or something like it, seems to have occurred to Zuckerberg, because the new mission statement spells out a reason for all this connectedness. It says that the new mission is to ‘give people the power to build community and bring the world closer together’. [...]

This toxic trio lies at the heart of disasters as wide-ranging as climate change, the 2008 financial crisis, and now, a sea-change in the very nature of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), the most prominent force in the creation and maintenance of "open standards" for the web. Standards are boring, complicated and important. Reasonable people can debate at length the optimal gauge for a railroad track or voltage for a mains socket, but in the absence of an agreement at the end, your trains will go off the rails as your kettle will burst into flames. Every W3C standard until 2017 formalised some technological means of giving users control over their computers, from the power to display a certain kind of image format to the power to render complicated web-pages in browsers. This week, the W3C published a first-of-its-kind recommendation titled Encrypted Media Extensions (EME) that does just the opposite. It enables media companies from Netflix to the BBC to remotely control your computer while you are enjoying copyrighted works, preventing you from (for example) saving a programme for later, without regard to whether you have the legal right to do so.
