Course description It is commonly understood that the Internet now affects almost every aspect of society– from knowledge sharing to economic interactions – and of personal life (digital divide permitting). Understanding the relationship between Internet and society is a complex matter, since its shape and its evolution are not an immutable technological law, but instead the consequence of specific choices, both private and public, that could – at least in principle – very well change over time. This course – addressed to students of all Doctoral Programmes – is aimed at providing an interdisciplinary overview of a selection of Internet & Society topics currently addressed by scholars at global level, all of which have tangible implications in many domains, and may very well suggest new lines of reasoning to ongoing research of PhD candidates. These topics include, but are not limited to: * knowledge creation and sharing in the digital environment, applied, e.g., to scientific publications, addressing legal and social aspects of Open Access publishing, and to software, discussing the principles and applications of Free Software; * the role of the Internet in the evolution of journalism, civic hacking, and civic engagement; * the evolution of the Internet architecture and protocols with respect to entrepreneurial models, and the economic environment; * the future of Internet & Society research, also taking into account ongoing technological innovations such as the Internet of things, discussing their opportunities and risks. All topics will be addressed from a interdisciplinary point of view (i.e., considering at least two disciplines) and making a broad use of examples. Sperando di fare cosa gradita, segnalo che in autunno (7-8 ottobre 2016) si terrà un convegno su “Nodi virtuali, legami informali: Internet alla ricerca di regole (A venticinque anni dalla nascita del Web)”. L’evento è organizzato dall’Università di Pisa, nell’ambito delle attività del Master in Internet Ecosystem: Governance e Diritti, diretto dalla prof.ssa Dianora Poletti. Parteciperanno, tra gli altri, Lino Cinquini, Pasquale Costanzo, Tommaso E. Frosini, Domenico Laforenza, Antonio Nicita, Peppino Ortoleva, Paolo Passaglia, Antonio Samaritani, Guido Scorza e V. L’incontro si struttura in tre sessioni. Nella prima (Legami informali: Internet e la destrutturazione delle regole tradizionali), i relatori invitati tracceranno la parabola dell’allontanamento che il web ha imposto rispetto ai tradizionali modi di produzione del diritto. Nella seconda (Nodi virtuali), saranno predisposti panels inerenti a specifiche tematiche, di diritto nazionale, sovranazionale e comparato, che saranno discusse tra gli interventori selezionati in base alla presente call. La terza sessione (Nodi concretizzati, legami formalizzati: dall’anomia ad una comunità organizzata) sarà dedicata all’individuazione, in una serie di relazioni, dei fondamenti attorno cui la comunità degli internet users si riconosce ed è destinata a riconoscersi nel prossimo futuro. Modalità di partecipazione Per presentare un intervento, nell’ambito della seconda sessione, si richiede l’invio, entro il 31 luglio 2016, all’indirizzo di posta elettronica info(a)internetecosystem.it, del titolo dell’intervento proposto e di un abstract, di lunghezza compresa tra 2.000 e 3.000 caratteri. Entro il 10 agosto 2016, verrà comunicato l’esito della selezione ed il panel cui l’intervento sarà destinato. http://netdatadirectory.org/ About The Net Data Directory is a free, publicly accessible database of information on different sources of data about the Internet. The directory is intended to make finding helpful quantitative data about a broad range of Internet-related topics—broadband, cybersecurity, freedom of expression, and more—easier for researchers, policymakers, journalists, and the public. Users can search, sort, and filter records within this database to identify datasets relevant to their work. The vast majority of datasets within the directory are themselves open and publicly available. Records in the directory include the name of the data source, a short description of the available data, and a link. Data sources are tagged both by geographic coverage (including global, regional, and country-level tags) and by topic (such as broadband, cybersecurity, and social media). The Net Data Directory is a partner of Internet Monitor, a project of the Berkman Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University.

US plans intervention in EU vs Facebook case caused by NSA snooping Ireland again the battleground between American surveillance and Europeans' Human Rights <http://www.theregister.co.uk/2016/06/13/us_to_intervene_eu_vs_facebook_case/> The US government has asked the Irish High Court to hear its information in the case between a privacy activist and Facebook. Austrian activist and lawyer, Max Schrems, brought his complaint against the social network after the revelations of the NSA's PRISM surveillance program, which he, alongside Digital Rights Ireland, alleged made it illegal for Facebook to shuffle European citizens' data to America under EU law. Last year, the Court of Justice of the EU <http://www.theregister.co.uk/2015/10/06/safe_harbour_walls_come_tumbling_do…> (CJEU) ruled in their favor. However, responding to a subsequent complaint <http://www.theregister.co.uk/2016/05/25/ireland_data_protection_commissione…> claiming Facebook was still doing this, the Data Protection Commissioner of Ireland sought "declaratory relief in the Irish High Court and a referral to the CJEU to determine the legal status" of those ongoing transfers. At a hearing in the Irish High Court today, the US government has sought to intervene in the case, and the court has been adjourned for two weeks to give it – and other parties – time to file a motion in this regard. A spokesperson for the court confirmed to /The Register/ that the US government, alongside "the American chamber of commerce, the alliance titled ESA, and the business lobby group IBEC, all gave notice in the high court today that they intend to seek to be added as /amicus curiae/," or friend of the court, which would allow them to submit information although they were not directly cited in the court action. In a canned statement, Schrems said: "This may be a unique opportunity for us. I therefore very much welcome that the US government will get involved in this case. This is a huge chance to finally get solid answers in a public procedure. I am very much looking forward to raising all the uncomfortable questions on US surveillance programs in this procedure. It will be very interesting how the US government will react to the clear evidence already before the court."
