Stucke Harvard University Press, 356 pp., $29.95 A few months ago The Washington Post reported that Facebook collects ninety-eight data points on each of its nearly two billion users. Among this ninety-eight are ethnicity, income, net worth, home value, if you are a mom, if you are a soccer mom, if you are married, the number of lines of credit you have, if you are interested in Ramadan, when you bought your car, and on and on and on. How and where does Facebook acquire these bits and pieces of one’s personal life and identity? First, from information users volunteer, like relationship status, age, and university affiliation. They also come from Facebook posts of vacation pictures and baby pictures and graduation pictures. These do not have to be photos one posts oneself: Facebook’s facial recognition software can pick you out of a crowd. Facebook also follows users across the Internet, disregarding their “do not track” settings as it stalks them. It knows every time a user visits a website that has a Facebook “like” button, for example, which most websites do. The company also buys personal information from some of the five thousand data brokers worldwide, who collect information from store loyalty cards, warranties, pharmacy records, pay stubs, and some of the ten million public data sets available for harvest. Municipalities also sell data—voter registrations and motor vehicle information, for example, and death notices, foreclosure declarations, and business registrations, to name a few. In theory, all these data points are being collected by Facebook in order to tailor ads to sell us stuff we want, but in fact they are being sold by Facebook to advertisers for the simple reason that the company can make a lot of money doing so. Professeur de droit à Harvard, constitutionnaliste réputé, Lawrence Lessig est l'un des premiers penseurs du web. Dès les années 1990, il a réfléchi aux liens entre Internet et la démocratie. C'est à lui que l'on doit les licences "creative commons" (pour la mise à disposition d'oeuvres en ligne). Et la publication, en 2000, d'un texte devenu classique de la littérature numérique "Code is law" [“le code, c’est la loi"]. Il y expliquait qu'avec la numérisation de nos sociétés, le programme informatique était amené à faire loi. 16 ans, plus tard les algorithmes sont partout dans nos vies. Killer robots await Trump’s verdict

[] One Trump transition team member says the U.S. should not only oppose bans on the weapons but should lead the way in developing them. “The U.S. is not going to be amenable to any protocol in Geneva that bans the weapons they are developing," said Steven Groves, a Heritage Foundation fellow assigned to the transition’s State Department landing team. “Why would they do it when their peer competitors are developing the same kind of weapons?” He stressed that he does not speak on behalf of the transition team. The team did not respond to requests for comment. Groves, who has written frequently about the issue, has previously warned that attempts to ban autonomous weapons or "regulate [them] out of existence" were unlikely to succeed — although he expressed worries last year that the Obama administration might “cave” to the human rights groups, as it previously had on land mines. A Modular Advanced Armed Robotic System (MARS) armed robot is seen as the Defense Department on May 14, 2015 at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. Developing autonomous weapons is “the only way U.S. armed forces can retain a tactical and strategic advantage over its enemies in future conflicts,” Groves wrote for Heritage last year. []

Once they are in place, researchers warn, the psychological aspects of digital embodiment — combined with the troves of data that consumer VR products can freely mine from our bodies, like head movements and facial expressions — will give corporations and governments unprecedented insight and power over our emotions and physical behavior. [] Fred Jennings, an attorney with the digital rights-focused law firm Tor Ekeland, PC, says that if the plaintiffs in the Illinois biometric privacy case prevail, it could establish a foothold for future efforts to limit the intimate data collected by VR and AR platforms. But unlike traditional biometric data, like fingerprints and DNA, the murky legal definition of data that records a wide range of voluntary and involuntary physical movements makes it difficult to legislate what can and can’t be done with that data once it’s collected. “The problem is it falls into this gray area in between medical data, which is pretty well litigated and protected, and communications data,” says Jennings. Transparency would also need to be a crucial part of any regulation, he says, because in many cases it’s not clear to what extent behavioral analytics platforms have already been integrated into consumer VR products and apps. Facebook, CognitiveVR, and Yotta Technologies did not respond to inquiries about how VR analytics platforms are currently being deployed and how the data they collect might be used. Oculus’s privacy policy specifically states that it collects “physical movements and dimensions” from users in order to “customize your experiences based on your online activities” and “market to you.” The company also claims the right to share that information with third parties including Facebook, as well as access and preserve it in order to “detect, prevent and address fraud or other illegal activity,” among other uses. Last April, the permissive language led Sen. Al Franken to send an open letter to Oculus expressing concerns about the privacy of Oculus Rift users. []

FYI Intel Committee Releases Declassified Snowden Report f t # e <http://www.addthis.com/bookmark.php> *Washington, December 22, 2016* The House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence today released a declassified version of its investigative report on Edward Snowden, the former National Security Agency contractor who fled to China and then Russia after stealing an estimated 1.5 million classified documents. The report, including redactions for classified information, was the result of a two-year inquiry into Snowden’s background, likely motivations, and methods of theft, as well as the damage done to U.S. national security as a result of his actions. The report was completed in September 2016 and submitted to the Intelligence Community for a declassification review. Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes said, *“I’m gratified that, with the completion of the declassification review, the American people can now get a fuller account of Edward Snowden’s crimes and the reckless disregard he has shown for U.S. national security, including the safety of American servicemen and women. It will take a long time to mitigate the damage he caused, and I look forward to the day when he returns to the United States to face justice.” * Intelligence Committee Ranking Member Adam Schiff said, *“**Snowden and his defenders claim that he is a whistleblower, but he isn't, as the Committee's review shows. Most of the material he stole had nothing to do with Americans’ privacy, and its compromise has been of great value to America's adversaries and those who mean to do America harm. Whistleblowers are important to proper oversight and we will protect them from retaliation, and those who engage in civil disobedience are willing to stay and face the consequences.”* NSA and Cybersecurity Subcommittee Chairman Lynn Westmoreland said, *“The American people have every right to know the extent of the damage Edward Snowden did to our national security, and I applaud the declassification of the House Intelligence Committee’s report. CFP La scuola al tempo dei social network

Segnalo a quanti interessati la segeuente Call for Papers: Rivista “Annali online della Didattica e della Formazione Docente” Call for Papers n. 13/2017 La scuola al tempo dei social network Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram, Whatsapp e altri, tra piattaforme di social networking e servizi di messaggistica, sono sempre più presenti – sia pure in contesti, per usi e a livelli diversificati – nelle vite di tutti, in particolar modo dei giovani e dei giovanissimi. La stessa scuola è dunque coinvolta, direttamente o indirettamente, in un fenomeno – quello dell’interattività digitale, multimediale, istantanea – che, in alcuni casi, riesce a gestire e a sfruttare sul piano didattico ed educativo (si pensi al sempre più diffuso utilizzo di Edmodo per finalità di apprendimento) mentre, in altri casi, ne registra gli effetti in termini di disattenzione, elusione delle attività formative, fino ad arrivare a gravi casi di cyberbullismo, violazione della privacy, mancata tutela dei dati personali dei minori. Ma quanto e che cosa la scuola, ovvero gli insegnanti, conoscono ed applicano delle regole contenute nel Codice della Privacy e delle condizioni contrattuali che regolano l’accesso ai social network? E i genitori come e quanto responsabilmente disciplinano l’uso della rete in famiglia e negli altri contesti di vita dei loro figli minorenni? Con la presente Call for Papers, la rivista “Annali online della Didattica e della Formazione Docente” invita ricercatori e studiosi ad affrontare questa tematica, focalizzando l’attenzione, da un lato, sulle misure, nazionali e sovranazionali, finalizzate a costruire una tutela dei minori nel mondo digitale, con particolare riferimento alle regole che disciplinano il rapporto dei giovani con i siti di socializzazione (età minima di iscrizione, conoscenza delle policy adottate, protezione dei propri e degli altrui dati personali, consenso alla pubblicazione di video e foto ecc.), dall’altro sull’effettiva conoscenza del quadro normativo e dei rischi del Web da parte di genitori ed insegnanti. Sono, pertanto, sollecitati contributi teorici, report di ricerche empiriche, rassegne documentarie e bibliogra-fiche e recensioni di volumi recentemente pubblicati su questo tema, in prospettiva non solo giuridica – ma anche pedagogica, psicologica, antropologica e sociologica – volti ad illuminare questo particolare e specifico versante dell’“educazione digitale”. Gli interessati dovranno inviare la loro proposta via mail ad Arianna Thiene (arianna.thiene(a)unife.it) ed Elena Marescotti (elena.marescotti(a)unife.it) allegando un file in formato Word ove siano riportati: titolo dell’articolo proposto, 3-5 parole chiave, abstract compreso tra 1500 e 2000 caratteri (spazi inclusi), nome e cognome dell’autore, recapito e-mail per comunicazioni, eventuale affiliazione ad Università o altro ente di ricerca. Si accettano contributi nelle seguenti lingue: italiano, inglese, francese, spagnolo. La scadenza per l’invio dell’abstract è fissata al 15 gennaio 2017. Il Comitato di Redazione della rivista effettuerà una valutazione delle proposte pervenute e ne darà comunicazione ai proponenti entro il 31 gennaio 2017. Gli autori degli abstract approvati, perché in linea con gli obiettivi della Call, dovranno inviare il loro contributo completo (redatto nel rispetto delle norme redazionali pubblicate sul sito http://annali.unife.it/adfd/about/submissions#authorGuidelines) entro il 15 aprile 2017. Tutti gli articoli saranno sottoposti a procedura di referaggio in doppio cieco. La pubblicazione del fascicolo è prevista per giugno 2017.
