U.S. Judge Rules Microsoft Must Produce Emails Held Abroad Judge Rules Company Must Comply With a U.S. Warrant for Email Stored at Data Center in Ireland Microsoft must comply with a U.S. warrant for customer email stored in a company data center in Ireland, a federal judge ruled Thursday. The search warrant was issued as part of a criminal investigation whose details remain secret. It is unclear whether the customer targeted by the Justice Department is located in the U.S. The company's lawyers had argued that the Justice Department needed to obtain the emails through a legal treaty with Ireland, and that forcing Microsoft to retrieve them without the country's consent violated Irish sovereignty and international law. But Chief U.S. District Judge Loretta Preska in Manhattan federal court ruled that the location of the email was irrelevant, because Microsoft controlled it from the U.S. Microsoft General Counsel Brad Smith said Thursday, "The only issue that was certain this morning was that the District Court's decision would not represent the final step in this process. What 3D printing is will be explained, followed by a consideration of 3D printing's interaction with existing areas of law, namely: * intellectual property * constitutional and fundamental rights * product liability * medical regulation * arms control Angela Daly will consider how the decentralised nature of 3D printing, along with its personal computer and Internet companions, create the theoretical possibility of less effective enforcement of these laws and regulation. Some thoughts will also be given on how well real-life attempts to regulate 3D printing, through DMCA takedown notices aimed at removing 3DP design files in alleged infringement of others' IP and the legislative responses to the 'Liberator' 3D printed gun controversy have fared. Final comments will be made on whether current legal conceptions in intellectual property, constitutional rights and product liability, for instance, are rendered redundant by the technological advances contained within 3D printing and whether, in light of this, their reconsideration is necessary. BIOGRAFIA - e informazioni supplementari [Angela Daly] Angela is a research fellow in the Swinburne Institute for Social Research (Australia), primarily conducting research on the legal and social implications of 3D printing, and is also an affiliate of the Swinburne Law School. She has just finished a PhD at the European University Institute (Italy), whose substance concerns the extent to which existing EU law and regulation address concentrations of private economic power which impede free information flows online, to the detriment of Internet users' autonomy. Ho letto ieri questo articolo sul sito di New Scientist, una ottima rivista inglese di divulgazione scientifica: http://www.newscientist.com/article/mg22530093.100-darkleaks-lets-anyone-se… A farla breve l'ambizione di darkleaks è di essere un punto di incontro tra chi vuole vendere segreti e chi li vuole acquistare. Il tutto avviene in un modo che assicurano essere anonimo e con pagamenti in bitcoin. I sorgenti del client per accedere alla piattaforma sono su github, con tanto di GUI e di python binding. But there was an earlier vote on another matter, and that was the one that held Harold DePriest’s attention. Mr. DePriest is the chief executive of the Electric Power Board, a community supplier of ultrahigh-speed Internet service in Chattanooga, Tenn. E.P.B. and the city of Wilson, N.C., another municipal broadband provider, last year petitioned the F.C.C. to preempt state laws that limit the build-out of community broadband services. The commission voted 3-2, along political party lines, in favor of using its federal power to override the restrictive laws in those two states. In the Tennessee case, the result of the restriction, Mr. DePriest said, is that “a tenth of a mile from where my fiber system ends are people who have no Internet service.” He wants to extend his fiber-optic cable network to those nearby rural neighborhoods, but the state legal restraints had prevented him.
