The Internet could mean the culture made and distributed on the Internet, the LOLCATZ, memes, etc. ("The Internet loves this kind of stuff.") The Internet could mean the infrastructure itself, its speed and distribution. ("The Internet is so sloooow right now.") The Internet could mean the industry that builds it, the consumer and B2B companies that effectively own all the quasi-public spaces through which we traipse. ("The Internet wants to disintermediate blahblahblah.") And there are a thousand other times when we find it easier to say, "The Internet does" or "It feels like the Internet is" or whatever rather than attempt to identify the specific actors of the play. And maybe that was helpful. Maybe in such a distributed system it makes sense to use "The Internet" as a stand-in for causal agents that seem to inhere /in the network/ without belonging to any individual node. Maybe it's like a mob or a gatheration of starlings; the dynamic relationships between the individuals turn out to be more important than the things themselves. But in 2012, that way of talking, if it was ever helpful, is no longer. And there are five reasons for that: Apple, Google, Amazon, Facebook, and Microsoft. Now, when we say, "The Internet" or "smartphones" or "computers" we usually mean something shaped by one of these entities, or all of them. As in other contexts it has documented spectacular events, spearheaded campaigns and uncovered scandals. More broadly citizen media and networked publics are shifting the balance of power both in the media and the political landscape. Like China and India, ASEAN nations are experiencing rapid growth and the online and citizen media space is only set to grow in media production, audience and importance. Whilst broadband access in the region is still often constrained to urban areas, citizen video is also being taken up as a political tool from those on the economic and political fringes. Initiatives such as Citizen Journalists Malaysia <http://cj.my/> and EngageMedia <http://engagemedia.org/> are working to develop strategic networks of new citizen video producers. In this discussion, Andrew Lowenthal, co-founder and Executive Director of EngageMedia, will outline their approach to video4change and their work in the region, in particular looking at West Papua, (a remote region of Indonesia that has been waging an independence campaign for more than 40 years), the development of regional, cross-border and multilingual video networks, and the effect and possibility of the internet and online media to generate new post-national political configurations and collaborations. About Andrew Andrew Lowenthal is Co-Founder and Executive Director of EngageMedia <http://engagemedia.org/>, an Asia-Pacific human rights and environmental video project begun in 2005. EngageMedia builds the capacity of video activists and campaigners to strategically use video and online technologies by building open source technologies <http://plumi.org/>, creating networks and conducting trainings. EngageMedia also undertakes a number of research initiatives <http://www.engagemedia.org/Projects/research> that look at the uses and effects of video as a social change tool. Current research partners with the MIT Center for Civic Media to explore the impact of 'video4change', another, with the University of Western Sydney, explores the citizen translator in the networked public sphere. Andrew has been working in the field of media and technology activism since 1998. His work traverses the fields of new media and video production, NGO management, network building, research, media and technology activism, software development, and project and event management. Andrew was active in the Indymedia network from 2000-2006. buonasera e buon anno a tutti poichè in questa lista si parla parecchio di "openness" a vari livelli, mi permetto di inoltrare anche qui una proposta di ricerca/sviluppo/formazione sull'argomento, che anche SE avessi i fondi non potrei certo portare avanti da solo. Siete tutti invitati a farla circolare il più possibile, in qualsiasi ambito EU riteniate opportuno. Come appianare il *divario che separa consumatore e impresa in mercati complessi*, quali, ad esempio, quello bancario, assicurativo o della telefonia? Di questi temi discuterà, in occasione del primo mercoledì di Nexa del 2013, *Elisa Brodi*, ricercatore presso la Divisione economia e diritto del Servizio studi della Banca d'Italia. Usualmente gli studiosi e /policymakers/ sono soliti rispondere propugnando l'imposizione di obblighi di /disclosure/ <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duty_of_disclosure> in capo alle imprese. L'attenzione è tutta rivolta ai /deficit/ che affliggono la clientela, sprovvista delle informazioni necessarie per valutare compiutamente le caratteristiche del prodotto offerto (cd. /product attribute information/). Sino a oggi, scarsa attenzione è stata dedicata alla circolazione di informazioni rispetto alle quali la lacuna che separa le parti è di natura più cognitiva che conoscitiva, ovvero quelle inerenti le abitudini/preferenze di consumo dell'utenza (cd. /*product use information*/). La ragione è semplice: *si tende a pensare che tali dati, "creati" dallo stesso cliente, non pongano un tradizionale problema di asimmetria informativa*. Tuttavia, raramente i consumatori sono in grado di elaborare e sfruttare appieno questo genere di informazioni. Quante persone, ad esempio, saprebbero individuare con esattezza l'intensità con la quale utilizzano il proprio telefono cellulare o la propria carta di credito? Recenti studi hanno messo in luce il *potenziale effetto benefico di un approccio regolatorio fondato sull'uso di strumenti telematici* in grado di processare, a beneficio del consumatore, la /product use information/. Al riguardo, un esempio particolarmente significativo di buona (e innovativa) /policy/ normativa giunge dal mercato italiano della telefonia mobile, nel quale è attivo un motore di ricerca -- denominato Supermoney <http://www.supermoney.eu/> e vigilato dall'AGCoM <http://www.agcom.it/Default.aspx?message=contenuto&DCId=550> -- che consente a ogni interessato di inserire i dati di consumo estratti dalla propria bolletta per verificare il costo che sosterrebbe, a parità di utilizzo, con altri operatori. In precedenza, ha prestato servizio presso l'area di Vigilanza del medesimo Istituto, occupandosi anche di tutela della clientela bancaria. Al workshop che ti è concluso ieri qui a Harvard (avente come oggetto primario la formazione di una rete globale di centri Internet & Società, tra cui Nexa), il prof. William Fisher ha fatto un intervento breve ma molto interessante sull'erosione della dicotomia pubblico/privato, soprattutto per quello che riguarda le corporations. Molte corporations infatti hanno assunto poteri che finora erano prerogativa dello Stato, ma continuando a invocare tutti i diritti propri delle entità private. Cari Iscritti alla lista Nexa, con l'occasione della fine dell'anno mi permetto di mandarvi un saluto e un augurio. Tutti insieme siamo in 453, mezzo migliaio di persone che hanno scelto di far parte di questo spazio virtuale dedicato a segnalazioni e discussioni sui temi Internet & Società. In quest'epoca dominata da social networks e blog non è una cosa da poco che una mailing list come questa continui a fiorire. Se Twitter, infatti, è diventato lo strumento principe per le segnalazioni, le mailing list continuano a offrire uno servizio che Twitter e Facebook e i blog offrono in maniera molto peggiore, ovvero, uno spazio di discussione non solo ragionevolmente efficace (soprattutto se si segue la netiquette), ma anche e soprattutto paritario. Un'agorà, insomma, uno spazio comunitario ben diverso dallo spazio riservato ai commenti del blog di questa o di quell'altra persona (strumento, il blog, che ha un ruolo importante, ma che è, appunto, un'altra cosa). Per non parlare di Facebook, strumento non solo "chiuso", ma anche davvero inadatto a fare una discussione un minimo seria. *Senate Approves Warrantless Electronic Spy Powers * The Senate on Friday reauthorized for five years broad electronic eavesdropping powers that legalized and expanded the President George W. Bush administration's warrantless wiretapping program. The FISA Amendments Act, (.pdf) which was expiring Monday at midnight, allows the government to electronically eavesdrop on Americans' phone calls and e-mails without a probable-cause warrant so long as one of the parties to the communication is believed outside the United States. The communications may be intercepted "to acquire foreign intelligence information." The House approved the measure in September. President Barack Obama, who said the spy powers were a national security priority, is expected to quickly sign the package before the law Congress codified in 2008 expires in the coming days. Over the past two days, the Senate debated and voted down a handful of amendments in what was seen as largely political theater to get Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Oregon) to lift a procedural hold on the FISA Amendments Act legislation that barred lawmakers from voting on the package. In the end, the identical package the House passed 301-118 swept through the Senate on a 73-23 vote. The American Civil Liberties Union immediately blasted the vote.
