Released Neubot 0.4 http://www.neubot.org/neubot-0.4 Version 0.4 is the fifth generally-available stable release of Neubot, coming after two months of hard work. It is distributed as: a .deb package for Debian and Ubuntu; a zipped application for MacOSX; an installer for Windows XP SP3+. It is also available in source format. This release contains 475 patches. The diffstat says: 126 files changed, with 8686 lines inserted and 1837 lines deleted. Here are the most relevant changes: o the bittorrent test has been finalized and now runs in background by default. A tab has been added to the web user interface to show the results of the test; o the web interface is now internationalized and a full Italian translation is available; o on login, under Windows and Ubuntu, now Neubot notifies the user if she needs to update her privacy settings and/or a new release is available; o the master server is now capable of redirecting a Neubot to a nearby server, using MaxMind's GeoLite technology and data <http://www.maxmind.com/>; o now the log tab shows the last 7 days logs instead of the logs since the current instance of Neubot was started; o the number of variables exposed in the settings tab has been reduced and most internal-only settings are not visible anymore; o now there is a custom Neubot executable for Debian that should improve reliability when the user has installed several versions of Python; o the new `show_database` command allows to display the content of a database in the web user interface; o code rationalization and bug fixes. As usual, in the following days we will blog about the new features implemented by this version of Neubot, providing more details. Most of the changes have been tested for a reasonable amount of time on our development machines. The release has been smoke-tested on Ubuntu Linux 11.04, Windows XP SP3, Windows 7 and MacOSX 10.6. Most of the report includes the typical copyright extremism nonsense, especially when it comes to the digital environment. However, this scholarly study cannot but recognize that ACTA contains serious legal flaws and brings nothing to EU citizens. Despite trying hard to help the Commission, it is forced to conclude by suggesting that the EU Parliament should reject ACTA. *** After the strong criticisms expressed by EU academics, this study [1] commissioned by the Directorate-General for External Policies of the European Parliament also recognizes ACTA's important flaws, while underlining that it is "difficult to point to any significant advantages that ACTA provides for EU citizens beyond the existing international framework." According to the study, "unconditional consent would be an inappropriate response from the European Parliament given the issues that have been identified with ACTA as it stands". The study reaches that conclusion without even offering a comprehensive and objective assessment of the digital chapter. It could have gone much further than merely stating that the worst provisions of previous leaked drafts do not appear in the final text. Indeed, a detailed comparison with the requests of RIAA in 2008 shows that the copyright lobby's demands have deeply influenced the final text. As a result of the copyright lobbies' noxious influence, ACTA still includes a set of measures for stepping up the war on the sharing of culture over the Internet [2]. By pushing for "cooperation" with rights holders and threatening Internet companies with criminal measures, ACTA would force them to police their networks and services, monitoring their users' communications, systematically circumventing judicial processes [3]. This is why the United Nations Rapporteur for freedom of expression recently expressed his concern with the impact of ACTA on rights and freedoms online [4]. "The study falls short of questioning the legitimacy of the "war on sharing" and of the dangerous provisions negotiated by the Commission that amount to creating a private copyright police of the Net. Even though the study is rather complacent with the entertainment industries' extremism, it cannot but suggest that ACTA is harmful for democracy and should be rejected. It proposes so many issues that should be fixed in ACTA before it could be ratified that it is a 'politically correct' way of stating that the whole agreement is totally unacceptable." said Jérémie Zimmermann, spokesperson of La Quadrature du Net. This massive operation was one of the largest of its type and site admins and users alike were branded as enemies of the TV and movie business. However, it now appears that in respect of the latter group, the opposite was found to be true. Following the event the Kino.to site displayed notices which stated that the site had been "closed on suspicion of forming a criminal organization to commit professional copyright infringement." While noting that several operators of the site had been arrested, it also criticized the site's users. "Internet users who illegally pirated or distributed copies of films may be subjected to a criminal prosecution," read the warning. But were the site's users all criminals hell-bent on destroying the movie industry? Afaik such rules do not apply to when you allow people to use a path over your land, but it apparently does apply if you allow people a path over your router. Anyway, what i understand is that since Fon is a closed club of people (only Fon owners can use other Fon access points), it's like those cigar bars that evade the non-smoking policy because they are a 'members club' instead of a bar. Consultazione AGCOM

Cari Amici, Vi scrivo anche a nome dei codirettori del centro NEXA per riprendere il discorso sullo schema di provvedimento AGCOM in materia di tutela del diritto d'autore sulle reti di comunicazione elettronica. Come è stato ampiamente segnalato anche sulla mailing list del centro, l'Autorità ha adottato con delibera n. 398/11/CONS uno schema di regolamento ed indetto una nuova consultazione pubblica (v. documenti allegati), con scadenza a 60 giorni dalla pubblicazione della delibera nella Gazzetta Ufficiale (ad oggi non ancora avvenuta). Il centro NEXA vorrebbe anche questa volta presentare proprie osservazioni. Tenuto conto dei tempi stretti e del periodo dell'anno infelice, conviene forse procedere rapidamente alla costituzione di un gruppo di lavoro che comprenda chiunque voglia partecipare e possibilmente almeno Borghi, Deb. De Angelis, Montagnani, Rossetti, Vaciago e Ziccardi, se disponibili, oltre a Blengino ed a me. Questo gruppo si riunirà una prima volta a Torino presso la sede del centro in via Boggio 65/A (per indicazioni dettagliate v. http://nexa.polito.it/contact) il 18 luglio alle ore 18 per raccogliere le idee ed organizzare il lavoro; ed una seconda volta sempre a Torino agli inizi di settembre per una verifica collegiale dei risultati raggiunti. Cari tutti, in accordo con Alessandro, vi comunico che domani l'incontro preliminare sulla nuova consultazione AGCom sarà trasmesso in streaming, tramite il consueto collegamento dal sito Nexa. Molti infatti hanno chiesto di partecipare da remoto, e non potendo creare diversi collegamenti dedicati, cercheremo di coinvolgere tutti coloro che lo vorranno tramite lo streaming.
