Non capisco il ruolo di Vodafone nel blackout della rete in Egitto. Il Corriere.it scrive: «Dalla notte internet risulta inaccessibile in tutto l'Egitto. Il governo sembra aver bloccato la principale arma degli attivisti. I social network sono stati fondamentali per l'organizzazione delle proteste cresciute in questi giorni . Bloccato anche il servizio di sms fra cellulari. La conferma arriva anche da Vodafone. L'operatore inglese ha fatto sapere che oggi il governo egiziano ha chiesto all'azienda di sospendere la copertura in alcune aree del Paese. E Vodafone eseguirà la richiesta spiegando che le autorità egiziane chiariranno la situazione a tempo debito». Sarò di certo ingenuo io, ma mi chiedo: come è possibile che una simile decisione sia presa cavandosela con la promessa di «chiarire la situazione a tempo debito»? Siamo proprio sicuri che continuare a propagandare il mito della «rivoluzione social», come sta facendo Repubblica (http://www.repubblica.it/tecnologia/2011/01/27/news/social_network_e_rivolt…, titolo: «tecnologia abbatte censura») faccia il gioco della libertà di espressione e non di chi la vuole limitare? Cordialmente, Francesca Musiani ------------ Call for Papers & Posters 11th Annual Graduate Student Conference April 15-16, 2011 Washington, DC The Organizing Committee of the STGlobal Consortium is now welcoming submission of abstracts for papers and/or posters to be presented at the 11th Annual STGlobal Conference for graduate student researchers. Consortium Profile: The STGlobal Consortium is an international, interdisciplinary organization of leading graduate programs in science and technology policy (STP) and science and technology studies (STS). The STGlobal conference, presented in collaboration with our Mission Partners, develops emerging S&T scholars and fosters mutual understanding in the S&T community. Topics: Abstracts are welcome on issues relevant to science and technology policy (STP); science and technology studies (STS); and related fields including but not limited to health, energy and environment, space, information and communications, innovation, education, and ethical, legal and social implications of science and technology. Eligible Presenters: Open only to students enrolled in a graduate program at the time of submitting an abstract, for work performed while enrolled in that program. Recent graduates who were enrolled students at the time of submitting an abstract are eligible as presenters. What to Expect: Student presenters will receive constructive feedback on their research, learn about related research in other disciplines, and build national and international connections with one another, prominent scholars, and professionals. Presentations are typically 15 minutes long, depending on the number of presenters in each session. Sessions will be assembled around similar themes and conducted in English. Students are encouraged to prepare a poster to present at a reception or to complement their formal presentation. Prominent figures from both STP and STS will deliver keynote addresses. Ample time is allotted for networking and community building and a portion of the conference will be dedicated to career development. Abstract Requirements: Abstracts of up to 250 words will be accepted. Abstracts should summarize the research you want to present as a paper and/or poster at the conference. Abstracts will be selected based on significance of research question and effectiveness in communicating your completed or in-progress research. Deadlines: Recommended Submission Date for Abstracts: November 15, 2010 Final Submission Date for Abstracts: January 31, 2011 Submission Guidelines: Submit abstracts via e-mail to abstracts(a)stglobal.org. SALINGER'S infamous mania for privacy included a rather self-defeating litigious streak. One of the author's final public acts was to file a lawsuit enjoining the publication of a book that otherwise would have passed immediately into obscurity. [...] 'Some stories, my property, have been stolen,' Mr. Salinger said. 'Someone's appropriated them. It's an illicit act. It's unfair. Suppose you had a coat you liked and somebody went into your closet and stole it. That's how I feel.' As a matter of justice, surely Salinger was owed some the proceeds from the sale of this volume. Naturally Salinger sued, seeking a tidy sum in damages. Yet these were works he meant never to republish, so it's doubtful the prospect of lost profits was the source of his ire. And I don't buy his defence. As Nina Paley delightfully illustrates <http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IeTybKL1pM4>, making copies of something is utterly unlike stealing a coat. When somebody steals your coat, you can't wear it any more. If somebody distributes copies of your stories, there's more for everyone. Try an alternative story: "Suppose you're a domineering patriarch who insists on telling his typically compliant middle-aged children to eat grits for breakfast and suddenly one day they don't. That's how I feel." The only thing Salinger really lost was his jealously guarded sense of exclusive control over everything he ever had a hand in creating. Whether or not this kind of loss counts as a real harm, whether there is a legitimate moral entitlement to this kind of exclusive and comprehensive control of one's creative work, is one of the great questions of our age. Given the all-too-successful legal and legislative efforts of Disney, the recording industry and artists like Salinger, the prevailing model of copyright has come to appear as yet one more way in which our political economy is rigged to protect privilege. This shift in perception can be explained by a bigger shift in our creative culture. The rise of the arts of the sample, the remix and the mashup alongside the emergence of the open-source software movement <http://www.economist.com/node/17899970> has engendered a growing sense that creative work both draws from and adds to a common pool of shared culture. This change in the mood and tools of the creative class has made Salinger's legal aggression against biographers, filmmakers and inferior writers seem less like charming New Hampshire get-off-my-lawn curmudgeonism and more like a contemptible failure of generosity. A decent man does not shoot at kids taking a shortcut across his back forty. But Salinger, again and again, lawyered up, aimed carefully, and fired.
