When online is offline: the case for hyperlocal webservers and networks https://cyber.law.harvard.edu/events/luncheon/2015/09/Griffey *Berkman Fellow, Jason Griffey* Today, 6.00 pm Webcast live:http://cyber.law.harvard.edu/interactive/webcast <http://cyber.law.harvard.edu/interactive/webcast> http://nexa.polito.it/berkman-webcast-live <http://nexa.polito.it/berkman-webcast-live> The LibraryBox Project (along with other emerging projects like PirateBox, occupy.here, IdeasBox, and others) is an attempt at bridging the divide in delivery of digital information in areas where there is a lack of communications infrastructure or where that infrastructure has been damaged or is overly monitored or controlled. As self-contained, non-connected portable servers, these devices can be used to circumvent governmental firewalls, distribute information in areas of political upheaval, reach the most remote areas to deliver healthcare information, and help recovery efforts after natural disasters. This presentation will be an overview of the LibraryBox project and its current state, goals and development roadmap, and a discussion of possible next directions and needs. About Jason Jason Griffey is the founder and principal at Evenly Distributed (http://evenlydistributed.net) a technology consulting and creation firm for libraries, museums, education, and other non-profits. Jason is a Fellow at the Berkman Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University, where he studies hyperlocal micronetworks such as his LibraryBox project. He has written extensively on libraries and technology, most recently a chapter in The Top Technologies Every Librarian Needs to Know: A LITA Guide. His previous book, Mobile Technology and Libraries, is a part of the award-winning Tech Set series. Named a Library Journal Mover & Shaker in 2009, Griffey has written and spoken internationally on topics such as the future of technology and libraries, personal electronics in the library, privacy, copyright, and intellectual property. A full list of his publications and presentations can be found on his CV. He is one of eight winners of the Knight Foundation News Challenge for Libraries for the Measure the Future project (measurethefuture.net) an open hardware project designed to provide actionable use metrics for library spaces. Griffey is the creator and director of The LibraryBox Project (librarybox.us), an open source portable digital file distribution system. He can be stalked obsessively online, and spends his free time with his daughter Eliza, reading, obsessing over gadgets, and preparing for the inevitable zombie uprising.

U.S. Judge Rules Microsoft Must Produce Emails Held Abroad Judge Rules Company Must Comply With a U.S. Warrant for Email Stored at Data Center in Ireland Microsoft must comply with a U.S. warrant for customer email stored in a company data center in Ireland, a federal judge ruled Thursday. The search warrant was issued as part of a criminal investigation whose details remain secret. It is unclear whether the customer targeted by the Justice Department is located in the U.S. The company's lawyers had argued that the Justice Department needed to obtain the emails through a legal treaty with Ireland, and that forcing Microsoft to retrieve them without the country's consent violated Irish sovereignty and international law. But Chief U.S. District Judge Loretta Preska in Manhattan federal court ruled that the location of the email was irrelevant, because Microsoft controlled it from the U.S. Microsoft General Counsel Brad Smith said Thursday, "The only issue that was certain this morning was that the District Court's decision would not represent the final step in this process. l blocco dei siti per ragioni di copyright, attraverso gli ISP, anche se adottato in sede giudiziale, vìola la <http://eur-lex.europa.eu/LexUriServ/LexUriServ.do?uri=CELEX:32000L0031:IT:H TML> Direttiva 2000/31, sul Commercio Elettronico. , e si deve ritenere non conforme alla Costituzione Ellenica ( Art 5° della Costituzione). E quanto ha stabilito la Corte distrettuale di Atene nella sentenza 13478/2015. Alcune Associazioni di tutela del diritto dautore, che gestiscono i diritti dautore greci ed i diritti connessi, hanno presentato uningiunzione preliminare contro gli Internet Service Provider Provider (ISP) nel 2014 davanti allAlta Corte di Atene. I provider sono stati chiamati a bloccare attraverso i DNS laccesso ai siti che violerebbero il copyright. La Corte, nella sentenza 13478/2015, ha dichiarato illegittimi questi ordini di blocco, basandosi principalmente sulla Direttiva 31/2000 sul Commercio Elettronico ( che in Italia è stata recepita con <http://www.camera.it/parlam/leggi/deleghe/03070dl.htm> il decreto Legislativo 70 del 2003) . I punti principali del ragionamento sono i seguenti: la Corte ha ritenuto che vi fosse una violazione dei principi proporzionalità, che impongono ai Giudici di valutare a prevalenza i diritti costituzionalmente tutelati relativi alla libertà di informazione, la partecipazione alla società dellinformazione, nonché il diritto alla protezione della raccolta, lelaborazione e lutilizzo dei dati personali e la riservatezza della libertà di comunicazione, rispetto al diritto dautore. Io risulto avere 26 anni (49, ma su FB ho messo la data di nascita reale), essere impulsivo e poco organizzato (eppure mi dicono che la mia scrivania sembra una banca svizzera), essere contemporaneamente competitivo e rilassato, essere ateo al 33% o protestante al 33% (i "like" su Medjugorje e sul Santuario della Consolata non suggeriscono nulla?). Ma quello che mi secca di più è che risulto uomo al 49% e donna al 51%. Eppure sul profilo ho la barba, si vede che mi hanno preso per una Drag Queen. Insomma, se non vi avessi dato io spontaneamente le informazioni reali, dal mio profilo FB - analizzato secondo quel sito - cavereste poco. Ma credo che i big dei big abbiano sistemi più precisi. Io risulto avere 26 anni (49, ma su FB ho messo la data di nascita reale), essere impulsivo e poco organizzato (eppure mi dicono che la mia scrivania sembra una banca svizzera), essere contemporaneamente competitivo e rilassato, essere ateo al 33% o protestante al 33% (i "like" su Medjugorje e sul Santuario della Consolata non suggeriscono nulla?).
