Vorrei credere tanto, e che fossero chiare a tutti le implicazioni di dare responsabilità giuridica ad una cosa, un programma che un esperto può manipolare. E vorrei tanto credere che fosse chiaro a tutti che le AI... non sono intelligenti affatto. Che sono solo programmi, alcuni buggati, altri così irreparabili che non si può neanche dire con certezza se funzionino bene o no! Ma temo che qualcuno prenda sul serio a queste ipotesi.... Giacomo

Google to shut down Google+ after failing to disclose user data leak

This March, as Facebook was coming under global scrutiny over the harvesting of personal data for Cambridge Analytica, Google discovered a skeleton in its own closet: a bug in the API for Google+ had been allowing third-party app developers to access the data not just of users who had granted permission, but of their friends. If that sounds familiar, it’s because it’s almost exactly the scenario that got Mark Zuckerberg dragged in front of the US Congress. The parallel was not lost on Google, and the company chose not to disclose the data leak, the Wall Street Journal revealed Monday, in order to avoid the public relations headache and potential regulatory enforcement. Disclosure will likely result “in us coming into the spotlight alongside or even instead of Facebook despite having stayed under the radar throughout the Cambridge Analytica scandal”, Google policy and legal officials wrote in a memo obtained by the Journal. It “almost guarantees Sundar will testify before Congress”, the memo said, referring to the company’s CEO, Sundar Pichai. The disclosure would also invite “immediate regulatory interest”.[...]

Ieri l'autorita' antitrust inglese ha pubblicato uno studio su algoritmi e prezzi personalizzati. Fra i risultati, il fatto che gli algoritmi possono essere utilizzati per porre in essere pratiche illegali di fissazione dei prezzi e intese anticoncorrenziali, anche se "*the risk of algorithms colluding without human involvement is currently less clear*"... Qualche settimana fa si era discusso del fatto che esisterebbe un database di 16 milioni di persone usato per l'identificazione, tramite riconoscimento facciale, di chi compie reati. Riapro quella discussione solo perché forse ho trovato qualche elemento che può essere utile per chi fosse interessato. In particolare, al link qui sotto trovate un provvedimento del 26 luglio 2018 [doc. web: 9040256] col quale il Garante per la protezione dei dati personali ritiene che: "il trattamento di dati personali da realizzarsi mediante il sistema SARI Enterprise, secondo i presupposti descritti, non presenta criticità sotto il profilo della protezione dati". https://www.garanteprivacy.it/web/guest/home/docweb/-/docweb-display/docweb… Francamente non so se è questo il sistema a cui si faceva riferimento. Se non lo è, ben potrebbe essere qualcosa che gli assomiglia. In ogni caso il provvedimento del Garante contiene riferimenti ed estremi normativi utili sul tema e su come il Ministero dell’Interno si sia dotato di un sistema automatico di ricerca dell’identità di un volto presente in un’immagine all’interno della banca dati “SARI Enterprise”. Facebook Portal smart screen to launch amid concerns over privacy

The company has revealed details about its Amazon Echo competitor, a voice-controlled, webcam-equipped smart screen named Portal. Arriving in the US in November, Facebook Portal is a $199 (£152) 10-inch screen, with two speakers and a high-quality webcam attached, which the company hopes users will put in their living rooms and kitchens and use to launch video chats with friends and loved ones. The device, which also comes in a larger model, Portal+, for $349, can play music from Spotify, videos from Facebook Watch, and act as a photo frame when not in use. It is controlled using voice commands, although Facebook has eschewed the personal approach of competitors such as Apple’s Siri and Amazon’s Alexa in favour of a more disembodied presence: users initiate instructions with: “Hey Portal.” Surprisingly, the device is not just a competitor to the Echo; it also has Alexa built-in. Amazon’s smart assistant will handle the more conventional commands, such as setting timers, adding items to a shopping list or checking the weather. [..]
