Call For Classrooms (and Researchers, Professors, Teachers, Students …) *Mozilla is working with numerous educators, professors and researchers across the world, both to bring open-source, the open web and web technologies into the classroom, and to bring the contributions of students and their mentors to the world. You can be a part of this, and your field does not have to be Computer Science.* Mozilla in the classroom – and beyond Mozilla? Certainly, you have heard about us. Mozilla is best known for its work on the Firefox web browser <http://getfirefox.com/> and the Thunderbird mail client <http://getfirefox.com/> but that is not all there is to Mozilla, far from it. The activities of Mozilla reach largely beyond a few software products. The objective of the Mozilla project is to promote an *open*, *participative* web. For this purpose, we have developed and promoted Firefox, Thunderbird, open standards, add-ons, and countless experiments and innovations. For this purpose, we want to work with you. This is a call for academics and students. We would like to work with you, with your classrooms and with your labs. Mozilla is already present in numerous classrooms and research laboratories around the world, thanks to collaboration of numerous educators, professors, researchers and students. The TGH program offers residents the ability to improve their quality of life as new members of the online community. *What is Tech Goes Home?* Tech Goes Home (TGH) is an 11 year old, broadband education program, recognized by the FCC's National Broadband Plan for excellence in broadband adoption programming as well as being the recipient of Verizon's National Tech Savvy Award. In collaboration with Mayor Menino, Boston Public Schools, the Boston Center for Youth and Family Services, the Boston Public Library, the Timothy Smith Network, and the Boston Housing Association, TGH reaches thousands of Boston families and citizens. *LAST-JD call for applications* *Joint International Doctoral Degree in Law, Science and Technology *http://www.last-jd.eu/* * * * *Deadline February 11th, 2012* The Joint International Doctoral Degree in Law, Science and Technology is an *interdisciplinary integrated program designed to address the new legal, socio-ethical, and technical challenges* posed by the information society and the newly emerging technologies. The NEXA Center for Internet & Society is an Associate Partner of LAST-JD. The NEXA Center will collaborate to the development of the curriculum, suggesting topics for courses, seminars and theses, and offer internships to interested candidates. The program covers three different research fields with its curricula: - *Bioethics and Biolaw*, which looks at the legal and ethical issues arising in connection with advances in biology and medicine; - *ICT Law*, addressing the legal risks and opportunities in ICT; - *Legal Informatics*, an area of informatics that takes law as its subject matter, developing techniques with which to manage the legal domain. This program promotes European excellence, innovation, and competitiveness in such critical legal and ethical fields as the regulation of privacy, genomics and biobanks, e-government, e-health and e-commerce, the right of free speech on the Internet and intellectual property rights (IPR) with respect to the new technologies. Moreover, the program furthers the design of new software to support the legal profession, including systems based on the explicit representation of laws and regulations in a computable form, as well as systems for checking compliance with international, European, and national legalframeworks and systems in AI & Law. The National Park Service inscribed it on the Lincoln Memorial and the Library of Congress put it into its National Recording Registry. So we might hold it to be self evident that it can be spread freely. Not exactly. Any unauthorized usage of the speech and a number of other speeches by King -- including inPBSdocumentaries -- is a violation of American law. You'd be hard pressed to find a good complete video version on the web, and it's not even to be found in the new digital archive ofthe King Center's website <http://www.thekingcenter.org/archive>. In addition, the major TV networks have announced plans to axe all shows that might be critical favorites with small, fervent fan bases, but haven't mustered enough ratings to make a sizeable profit. Of course, none of the above is really happening. For innovative forms of protest, look elsewhere. Instead, Hollywood is taking the derailment of major new intellectual property laws in stride, stressing the positives -- "We welcome the Administration's clear statement that legislation is needed to stop foreign based thieves..." -- and probably ignoring its own failings. What happened? Putting aside the merits of the legislation for a moment, how does an industry that is supposed to earn its bread in churning out compelling messages lose a PR war? How does an industry that's rife with creative individuals appear so stodgy in arguing for reform? And maybe most of all -- how is it that the entertainment and media sectors, which have long been some of the strongest advocates of free speech in the nation, get painted as being the enemy of the First Amendment? The company analyzed nearly 500,000 comments made via its platform and found that the digital denizens using fictitious names, or pseudonyms, are actually responsible for the highest quantity and quality of comments on the web.
