Sharing: Culture and the Economy in the Internet Age

Apologies for multiple receptions of this message Dear friends, The book Sharing: Culture and the Economy in the Internet Age that I wrote with the help of my daughter Suzanne is finally out (February 1st, 2012). This message is to ask for your help in raising awareness globally about the book and its ideas, and for your participation in debating them (see below). It is also for expressing my personal thanks to each of you: the book would not exist without the many exchanges I had with nexaites and the inspiration I drew from them. Sharing makes a case for the legitimacy and usefulness of non-market sharing between individuals of digital works. Taking stock of recent economic knowledge about the culture economy, it models and describes a financing model ("creative contribution") designed to sustain an expanding creative economy in a context where sharing is recognized as a right. Philosophical, legal, and institutional aspects are also discussed. The creative contribution (term that I used since 2008) is yet another flatrate mechanism, but as described in Sharing it has many original aspects (based on social rights, including both rewards/remuneration and financing to future works, data collection for rewards based on voluntary provision using automated recording on user machines and under their sole control, etc.) Sharing is published under a hybrid publishing model with 4 components : - the paper book, marketed globally, - commercial eBooks in the US (more later) - an open access electronic version under a CC-By-NC-ND license< - a dedicated "live book" website at http://www.sharing-thebook.net, where you can comment on the book chapters, download source code and datasets, and run interactively our models with parameters of your choice. Hardly anyone "surfs" the Web anymore. The popularity of the "app paradigm," whereby dedicated mobile and tablet applications help us accomplish what we want without ever opening the browser or visiting the rest of the Internet, has made cyberflânerie less likely. That so much of today's online activity revolves around shopping --- for virtual presents, for virtual pets, for virtual presents for virtual pets --- hasn't helped either. Strolling through Groupon isn't as much fun as strolling through an arcade, online or off. THE tempo of today's Web is different as well. A decade ago, a concept like the "real-time Web," in which our every tweet and status update is instantaneously indexed, updated and responded to, was unthinkable. Today, it's Silicon Valley's favorite buzzword. .... In a way, we have all become such sandwich board men, walking the cyber-streets of Facebook with invisible advertisements hanging off our online selves. Vi scrivo, in questa occasione, poiché sto lavorando a un report di inquadramento sulla comunicazione pubblica online in Italia. Mio obiettivo - in questa fase - è raccogliere informazioni generali (seguiranno poi ulteriori sviluppi). Sul tema dell'oblio, segnalo il recente articolo di Stefano Rodotà su la Repubblica. Notate che sul sito di Repubblica (v. link sotto), evidentemente per una svista o malfunzionamento, l'articolo appare monco della sua prima parte (parecchie frasi!) juan carlos DAI RICORDI AI DATI L' OBLIO È UN DIRITTO? 30 gennaio 2012 --- pagina 50 sezione: CULTURA ***** MANCA LA PRIMA PARTE **** * di "rendere silenzioso" il chip grazie al quale si raccolgono i dati personali.
