La *censura su Internet* sta infatti sempre più diventando lo strumento tecnico che permette agli Stati di estendere al cyberspazio il proprio “monopolio della forza” al fine di sopprimere il potenziale radicale della tecnologia che chiamiamo Internet, ossia la proprietà di mettere chiunque al mondo potenzialmente in comunicazione con chiunque altro. Se dal punto di vista geopolitico è chiaro perché ci siano stati più o meno democratici che vogliono imporre la propria sovranità su Internet filtrando alcuni siti e contenuti, da un punto di vista empirico vi è il problema che *non si conosce il perimetro della censura*. C’è bisogno, in sostanza, di eseguire misure quantitative di censura su Internet per studiare con maggiore chiarezza quali siano i paesi in cui si censura, quali e quanti siti vengano bloccati, come vengano bloccati, quanto sia difficile per i cittadini censurati aggirare il blocco. Nel corso di questa presentazione, *Simone Basso* (Centro Nexa) e *Arturo Filastò* (Hermes Center, Tor Project e Centro Nexa) ci parleranno di censura Internet dal punto di vista del progetto OONI (Open Observatory of Network Interference) <https://ooni.torproject.org/>, un progetto open-source che esegue misure di censura su Internet. February 19, 2016 * The Transition: The good, the bad and the ugly* The IANA transition and ICANN accountability processes are lurching to a conclusion. The Marrakech meeting in early March will finish the deal. The basic outlines of a proposal that seems acceptable to, but not loved by, most stakeholders is taking shape. It is time for an overall assessment of where we are. The deal is so complex and multifaceted that it is difficult to grasp the total picture. To help with the assessment, this blog divides the proposals into three basic categories: the good, the bad and the ugly. Apologies to Sergio Leone, and for being trite, but the IANA transition is nothing if not full of goodness, badness and ugliness. We need to clearly separate them and decide whether the total package is worthwhile. As platforms and legislators continue to debate and engineer responses, most of the burden of dealing with online discrimination and harassment has been borne by the online citizens who experience and respond to these problems. How can everyday Internet citizens make sense of social problems online, including our own racist and sexist behavior? How can we support each other and cooperate towards change in meaningful, effective ways? And how can we know that our interventions are making a difference? MIT PhD candidate Nathan Matias shares four years of research and design interventions aimed at expanding the power of citizens to understand and develop effective responses to discrimination and harassment online. About Nathan Nathan Matias is a PhD candidate at the MIT Media Lab Center for Civic Media with Ethan Zuckerman and a fellow at the Berkman Center for Internet and Society. His research interests focus on social computing, collective action, and citizen-led social science. Nathan has collaborated with a wide range of social media companies, news organizations, and advocates to better understand issues of gender discrimination, harassment, and social movements online. His PhD explores methods for digital citizens to conduct data science and field experiments to monitor problems and evaluate their responses to social problems online. Before MIT, Nathan worked in tech startups that have reached over a billion users, helped start a series of education and journalistic charities, and studied postcolonial literature at the University of Cambridge and Elizabethtown College. He has published data journalism and in The Atlantic, PBS, the Guardian, and other international media.

Now anyone can submit their images to the Cloud Vision API to understand the contents of those images — from detecting everyday objects (for example, “sports car,” “sushi,” or “eagle”) to reading text within the image or identifying product logos. With the beta release of Cloud Vision API, you can access the API with location of images stored in Google Cloud Storage, along with existing support of embedding an image as part of the API request. We’re also announcing pricing for Cloud Vision API and added additional capabilities to identify the dominant color of an image. For example, you can now apply Label Detection on an image for as little as $2 per 1,000 images or Optical Character Recognition (OCR) for $0.60 for 1,000 images.
