These detailed user-generated information-streams offer a unique opportunity for cities to understand and engage their citizens. The research domain of smarter cities aims to monitor disruptive events (e.g., emergencies, Olympics), analyze social behaviour, identify citizens' sentiment and understand their interactions with services. On the other side, cities can use their understanding of the citizen to foster stronger relationships with the diverse communities in their constituencies. This understanding could be applied to mobilize people on important issues such as education, health care, political engagement and community awareness. Current social media research falls short of what the agenda behind smarter cities requires. Most of the research in social media has gone into understanding the relationship between the city and its dwellers, and researchers have done so by collecting and analyzing what dwellers post on social media sites. However, these sites could be used not only to monitor citizens but also to engage them. This workshop is interested in research that aims to progress both sides of this relationship, but particularly research that works towards closing the loop between the city and the citizens This WCMC workshop fosters discussions covering topics such as (but not limited to): * Use of social media to engage citizens, for example through gamification * Improving understanding of the city through mining social media * Disaster recovery and coordination using social media * Mobilizing the community through social media * Pervasive applications for user interaction and data collection * Enabling citizen and NGO initiatives through social media * Methodology for quality evaluation and validation of user generated content * Visualizations and interfaces to enable exploration of city data * Privacy and ethical concerns in citizen engagement SUBMISSIONS All contributions must be submitted as PDF files. The workshop accepts full papers (no longer than 6 pages) and position papers (no longer than 4 pages),and all must be submitted by the deadlines given above, and formatted in AAAI two-column, camera-ready style (see the author instructions page). All submitted papers will be reviewed and judged on originality, technical correctness, relevance, and quality of presentation by the Program Committee. All accepted submissions must be presented during the workshop. Building upon a process- and context-oriented information quality framework, this paper seeks to map and explore what we know about the ways in which young users of age 18 and under search for information online, how they evaluate information, and how their related practices of content creation, levels of new literacies, general digital media usage, and social patterns affect these activities. A review of selected literature at the intersection of digital media, youth, and information quality---primarily works from library and information science, sociology, education, and selected ethnographic studies---reveals patterns in youth's information-seeking behavior, but also highlights the importance of contextual and demographic factors both for search and evaluation. Youth use cues and heuristics to evaluate quality, especially visual and interactive elements. 3. La Fondazione Ahref invita al primo seminario di "Little things for big changes: informazione - innovazione - impresa" Il seminario di apertura dal titolo "Vederci giocare. La ludicizzazione dei media" sarà tenuto da Peppino Ortoleva, docente di Storia e teoria dei media all’università di Torino. Nel corso di questi ultimi venti-venticinque anni la presenza della ludicità, in termini di pratiche di gioco e anche in termini di metafora e di paradigma, si è venuta imponente come uno degli aspetti più visibili della società contemporanea: dal dilagare dei cosiddetti casual game, allo sviluppo dei videogame fino a divenire una delle principali industrie mediatiche, alla cosiddetta gamification di pratiche che un tempo non sarebbero state neppure pensabili come ludiche. Questo insieme di processi è insieme almeno in parte conseguenza delle trasformazioni del mondo della comunicazione, in particolare delle caratteristiche del rapporto uomo-macchina, in parte matrice a sua volta di cambiamenti di grande portate dei media, dallo sviluppo generalizzato di simulazioni e ambienti virtuali alla ludicizzazione di pratiche di relazione come i social network. There is no question that the reviled anti-piracy bills, known as SOPA and PIPA, were terrible. The ways in which they were terrible have been explained across the Internet. But understanding how they were bad is not the same as understanding *why* they were so bad, and the reason extends beyond these particular bills to a persistent issue with intellectual property laws and regulations more generally: the asymmetry of input during the drafting process.
