Il 20 aprile a Roma, dalle 15 alle 19, una occasione per discutere di Internet e Democrazia con Rodotà alla Fondazione Basso Di seguito la presentazione dell'incontro. Internet e democrazia Incontro seminariale Aprono la discussione Stefano Rodotà, Sara Bentivegna, Luca De Biase, Juan Carlos De Martin, Fiorella De Cindio, Giulio De Petra, Arturo Di Corinto, Carlo Formenti Internet è oggi al tempo stesso oggetto e strumento del conflitto politico. Oggetto, perché sul governo della rete e sulla proprietà dei contenuti che la percorrono operatori di telecomunicazioni, intermediari di contenuti e gestori di reti sociali confrontano duramente i loro diversi modelli di profitto, cercando di arruolare nelle proprie file i diversi interessi della moltitudine della rete. Strumento, perché è tramite Internet che si organizza l'azione politica di chi si ribella contro la dittatura e la partecipazione delle comunità che provano a governare i beni comuni, ma anche si sperimentano nuove e mirate forme di controllo politico e sociale. Con questo incontro la Fondazione Basso riapre il cantiere della ricerca sul cambiamento che Internet produce nella teoria e nella pratica della democrazia. Together the authors argue that the Public Domain - that is, the informational works owned by all of us, be that literature, music, the output of scientific research, educational material or public sector information - is fundamental to a healthy society. Academic publishing Open sesame When research is funded by the taxpayer or by charities, the results should be available to all without charge Apr 14th 2012 | from the print edition PUBLISHING obscure academic journals is that rare thing in the media industry: a licence to print money. An annual subscription to /Tetrahedron/, a chemistry journal, will cost your university library $20,269; a year of the /Journal of Mathematical Sciences/ will set you back $20,100. In 2011 Elsevier, the biggest academic-journal publisher, made a profit of £768m ($1.2 billion) on revenues of £2.1 billion. Such margins (37%, up from 36% in 2010) are possible because the journals' content is largely provided free by researchers, and the academics who peer-review their papers are usually unpaid volunteers. The journals are then sold to the very universities that provide the free content and labour. For publicly funded research, the result is that the academics and taxpayers who were responsible for its creation have to pay to read it. L'articolo, una volta pubblicato, viene copiato come voce su Wikipedia, dove sarà soggetto al consueto trattamento di collettivizzazione :-) E' un uovo di Colombo made in Plos. Varrebbe la pena cominciare a pensare a come copiarlo da noi... Ciao a tutti, molti di voi l'avranno gia' visto, letto, postato, twittato, etc ma credo valga la pena mandarlo anche in lista. E' il discorso (allegato in pdf) che Neelie Kroes ha tenuto a Lione ieri, alla 2012 World Wide Web Conference. Affronta tutti i temi piu' scottanti del momento, partendo dal presupposto che il concetto stesso di "openness" in rete e' ancora poco chiaro (e forse e' destinato a rimanerlo). Giuseppe
