It's quite likely that the only project in my dataset that you've heard of is Wikipedia. I'm am still finishing interviews but I'm hoping I can use feedback from the group to help frame the work going forward. My initial results are based on data from 8 projects -- the full population -- in the form of interviews of the projects' founders and extensive archival data. My findings are a set of propositions focused on suggesting why Wikipedia succeeded in attracting contributors while the other projects did so less effectively. In a follow-up project, I'm hoping to test these in a quantitative dataset I've been building. The project is part of a larger research project that attempts to use failure cases to understand why some attempts at online collective action are successful while most never take off.

http://blogs.ec.europa.eu/neelie-kroes/netneutrality/ La mia prima reazione a caldo è che sia una decisione sbagliata per almeno quattro motivi principali: 1. sottostima le capacità dei consumatori non solo di ottenere le informazioni necessarie, ma anche e soprattutto di capire le implicazioni potenziali delle proprie scelte; 2. sottostima le difficoltà (certamente in Italia, ma mi stupirebbe se fossimo gli unici) di cambiare ISP: se lo switch ha un costo sostanziale (e ce l'ha), come si fa a costruire l'intera decisione sulla possibilità di "votare coi propri piedi"? 3. per non parlare che in aree rurali, o anche solo in città non grandi, l'offerta di ISP, dove c'è, è limitata; 4. per non parlare infine, che gli ISP non sono tutti uguali, tranne l'eventuale differenza "full internet" / "limited Internet" (che per me è un ossimoro, ma ci siamo capiti): le loro caratteristiche sono multi-dimensionali. Come farà l'utente, per di più non super evoluto (vedi punto 1), a confrontare l'ISP veloce ma "limited Internet" con l'ISP lento ma "full Internet"? E confrontare i vari "limited Internet" tra di loro? Se c'e' un settore dove l'asimmetria informativa, per non parlare della più bizantina offerta commerciale, regna sovrana sono le TLC e la Commissaria Kroes dovrebbe saperlo. Se si pensa di risolvere questi quattro problemi ex post, good luck with that. E' purtroppo facile prevedere le conseguenze di questa scelta della Commissaria Kroes: la maggioranza degli utenti opterà per il servizio a prezzo minore (che, c'e' da scommetterci, nel giro di un 1-2 anni costerà come quello "full" di adesso...), purchè gli venga garantito Facebook, email, e YouTube.... juan carlos

The European construction is at a crossroads. Faced with a major global crisis that challenges its very existence, it must redefine itself by adopting new directions for its policies. These orientations can no longer be expressed negatively, as the avoidance of war, or as the rejection of National egoisms. They must install a new positive agenda, in which European citizens, and in particular the youth, can recognize what they have already started to build, and which they can trust as enabling them to build it further. While the finance-dominated economy is sinking and pulling societies downwards, citizens, advocacy groups and intellectuals have started building new agendas. There will be many paths opened, and this text explores but one of them: the recognition that in the digital era, a huge share of knowledge production, cultural creativity and public expression occurs in a non-market sphere, where the products of activities are placed under commons statutes. Il post (del Post) da cui traggo la notizia in realtà è ambiguo: più che un'iniziativa di YouTube, a me pare un'iniziativa della ONG di video advocacy Witness (consiglio il sito: www.witness.org) assieme a Storyful, che utilizza Youtube come canale di diffusione del progetto. L'idea di un canale video tematico può non essere il massimo dell'originalità, ma dedicarlo ai diritti umani è sempre una buona cosa.
