Buon Anno! Spero abbiate iniziato bene il 2010. Mercoledi' 13 gennaio si terra' il primo "mercoledi' di NEXA" del 2010 (il 16° dall'inizio della serie), sempre in corso Trento 21 e sempre dalle 18 alle 20. Questa volta non avremo un ospite, ma collaborativamente cercheremo di redarre una sorta di roadmap 2010 sui i temi "Internet & Società". Ovvero, proveremo a identificare le priorita', le sfide, le opportunita' per l'anno appena iniziato a livello sia italiano, sia europeo, sia internazionale. Per preparare l'incontro, invito gli iscritti alla lista a contribuire in questa sede, cosi' da arrivare all'incontro del 13 gennaio con una bozza su cui poi lavorare di persona durante il mercoledi'. I punti su cui vi invito a contruibuire (potete rispondere anche solo a un sottoinsieme e proporne anche di vostri, ovviamente) li trovate a seguire. Ancora auguri! a presto, juan carlos Relativamente a Internet nel corso del 2010: 1. In Italia 1.1. il maggior rischio per uno sviluppo sano della Rete sara' relativo a ... ? 1.2. E la maggiore opportunita'? 1.3. se si dovesse attivare un progetto di ricerca, lo si dedicherebbe a.... ? (max 3 temi) Perche'? 1.4. se si dovesse indirizzare l'attivita' di una associazione di advocacy (come la Quadrature du Net in Francia o EFF in USA), la si indirizzerebbe su quale tema (o quali temi, max 3)? Perche'? 1.5. se si dovessero indicare al Governo 3 priorita' di spesa, quali sarebbero? Perche'? 1.5.1. e a un governo regionale? (p.es., il Piemonte) 1.6. se si dovesse interloquire col Parlamento, si chiederebbe di legiferare in merito a Internet? Se si', su quali temi e perche'? 1.6.1. Esiste un intergruppo Parlamentare 2.0: che ruolo dovrebbe avere in simile gruppo nelle dinamiche politiche? 1.7. AGCOM e Autorita' Anti-Trust dovrebbero avere un ruolo maggiore o diverso in relazione a Internet? Se si', quale e perche'? 1.8 Le competenze ministeriali relative a Internet sono spezzettate tra molteplici dicasteri: avrebbe senso, secondo voi, istituire un Ministero della Rete? O e' piuttosto auspicabile/piu' efficace la creazione di un organismo consultivo che rappresenti gli utenti della Rete nei confronti delle altre istituzioni? (Si pensi, per esempio, al KulturRat tedesco per il mondo della cultura, http://www.kulturrat.de) O entrambe le cose? 2. In Europa: 2.1. il maggior rischio per uno sviluppo sano della Rete sara' relativo a ... ? 2.2. E la maggiore opportunita'? 2.3. se si dovesse chiedere alla Commission edi attivare un progetto di ricerca, lo si dedicherebbe a.... ? E' stato appena creato .....: che ruolo dovrebbe avere in simile gruppo nelle dinamiche politiche europee? 2.7 E' auspicabile la creazione di un organismo consultivo che rappresenti gli utenti della Rete nei confronti delle altre istituzioni europee? (Si pensi, per esempio, al KulturRat tedesco per il mondo della cultura, http://www.kulturrat.de) 3. Nel Mondo: 3.1: Si e' molto parlato di WSIS, IGF e di Governance di Internet: che cosa dobbiamo aspettarci nel 2010? E' possibile fare qualcosa a livello nazionale che abbia un impatto a livello globale? Se si', e' il Governo che dovrebbe muoversi? E in che direzione? 3.2. Negli ultimi mesi del 2009 le iniziative per un Internet Bill of Rights hanno preso quota: il 2010 sara' l'anno dell'IBR? 3.3. Da quali aree del mondo vi aspettate le maggiori novita' (nel bene e nel male) relativamente a Internet? Perche'?

Caro Marco, non entro nel merito della prima parte del tuo mail perchè proprio di questo vorrei parlare in Nexa. Peraltro, tu sai benissimo cosa pensano i fanatici estremisti come me di WIPO e delle sue iniziative, per non parlare di quella che consideriamo la grande truffa dell' "allargamento delle regole sui farmaci salva vita". Entro invece sul merito della "competenza dell'argomento". Perchè il prodotto artistico rientra e quello industriale no? Solo perchè sembra più facile diffondere il primo via Rete? Ma la Rete è ormai lo strumento principale per la diffusione del sapere scientifico che poi diventa brevetto. Per non parlare delle molte migliaia di brevetti su Internet (c'è una causa legale nella quale si sostiene che tutta l'attività della Rete è una violazione di brevetti precedenti) e dei prodotti proprietari che la Rete ospita, in contrapposizione con i suoi standard aperti. Comunque, se i due direttori concordano, ritiro la mia richiesta, senza far perdere tempo ad altri. Scusa ancora la mia assenza alla riunione di oggi che mi pare molto importante. Her father had directed or produced more than a hundred documentaries. Some of these were quite famous (Nine from Little Rock). Some were well-known even if not known to be by him (Monument to a Dream, the film that plays at the St. Louis arch). Some were forgotten but incredibly important for understanding American history in the twentieth century (A Time for Justice). And some were just remarkably beautiful (D-Day Remembered). So, as curator of his work, Grace Guggenheim decided to remaster the collection and make it all available on DVD, which was then the emerging platform for film. This post differs from theirs in that I want to talk about network effects, why codecs should be considered a fundamental web technology and what the long-term effects of the choices at this inflection point might look like./ Recently Youtube announced <http://youtube-global.blogspot.com/2010/01/introducing-youtube-html5-suppor…> that you could test out an HTML5-enabled version of their site. They said that they were doing this partially based on people’s “number one request” that Youtube do more with HTML5. (They left out the other half of that #1 request – that the implementation be based on open codecs, but more on that later.) Not to be outdone, Vimeo rushed to announce a beta version of their player <http://vimeo.com/blog:268> based on their site that claims HTML5 support as well. To be clear, this is great news. This is just the latest in a long string of changes for video on the web. We started with a raw “player” delivered by Real Media. Then on to media embedded directly in pages via Windows Media + Quicktime. More recently video on the web has been a a platform play by Flash. And finally to a place where media becomes a first class citizen on the web without a single source provider. These moves by Google and Vimeo (and before either of them, DailyMotion) show that things are changing for the better, and faster than I think anyone could have imagined. The players from Google and Vimeo do present a pretty serious problem, though. Each of these require a proprietary H.264 codec <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H.264> to be able to view them. These codecs aren’t compatible with the royalty-free web standards that the rest of the web is built on. The fact that they are being so unabashedly hyped along with the new darling of the web – HTML5 – means that most people don’t understand that something very dangerous is taking place behind the scenes. If you think that this isn’t an issue that’s worth worrying about you need to read the rest of this post. In particular the history of GIF shows us what happens when patented technologies are used on the web and what happens when network effects over-run the natural drive to royalty-free technologies at scale. MP3 pricing gives us a glimpse into the strategy around H.264 licensing and what the landscape might look like 5 years from now, assuming H.264 were baked into the web platform as a requirement.
