Call for proposals: Good Data book chapters

Good Data Call for Proposals for an INC Theory on Demand edited book *Editors: Angela Daly (Queensland University of Technology), Kate Devitt (Queensland University of Technology) & Monique Mann (Queensland University of Technology).* In recent years, there has been an exponential increase in the collection, aggregation and automated analysis of information by government and private actors, and in response to this there has been a significant critique regarding what could be termed ‘bad’ data practices in the globalised digital economy. These include the mass gathering of data about individuals, in opaque, unethical and at times illegal ways, and the increased use of that data in unaccountable and potentially discriminatory forms of algorithmic decision-making by both state agencies and private companies. Issues of data ethics and data justice are only likely to increase in importance given the totalizing datafication of society and the introduction of new technologies such as artificial intelligence and automation. In order to paint an alternative, more optimistic but still pragmatic picture of the datafied future, this open access edited collection will examine and propose what could be termed ‘good’ and ‘ethical’ data practices, underpinned by values and principles such as (but not limited to): · privacy/regulation/information security by design · due process rights · procedural legitimacy · the protection of individual and collective autonomy · digital sovereignty · digital anti-discrimination · data and intersectionality · ethical labour practices · environmental sustainability. Chapters should be short contributions (2500-5000 words) which can take differing forms, for example: · Manifestos for Good Data · Position papers · Traditional academic chapters Chapters can be theoretical takes or provocations on what Good Data is or should be, or can be case studies of particular Good Data projects and initiatives e.g. Indigenous data sovereignty initiatives, data cooperatives etc. Chapters can also be critiques of initiatives/movements which claim to be ethical but in fact fall short. All chapters, including academic ones, should be written in an accessible way and avoid the excessive use of jargon, etc. Academic chapters will be peer-reviewed. Other contributions will be editor-reviewed. We encourage contributions from throughout the world and from different disciplinary perspectives: philosophy, media and communications, cultural studies, STS, law, criminology, information systems, computer science etc. Proposals for chapters (up to 250 words) should be sent to Kayleigh Hodgkinson Murphy (kayleigh.murphy(a)qut.edu.au) by Friday 15 December 2017. Please include a brief biography (indicating whether you are an academic or practitioner, etc) and signal what kind of chapter you are proposing (manifesto/academic chapter, etc). If you have an idea for a chapter and want to discuss it before submitting a proposal, please contact Angela Daly (angela.daly(a)qut.edu.au) as soon as possible. We may be able to pair, for example, practitioners with academic authors on request. Decisions on proposals will be made by mid-January 2017, with a first full draft of chapters to be submitted by 31 March 2018. The project will involve empirical research on questions of privacy, rights and autonomy with regard to digital data in different regions around the world, in order to devise a globally applicable framework for just treatment with regard to our data. Hi all, the newly founded Weizenbaum Institute in Berlin, Germany, has a social science phd position on blockchain technologies on offer: PhD student position on social aspects of blockchain technologies The research group "Trust in Distributed Environments" at WeizenbaumInstitute for the Networked Society in Berlin, Germany has an openposition for a PhD student researcher with a focus on social and governanceaspects of smart contracts and blockchain technologies. The group will be interdisciplinary; the willingness to work with other disciplines(computer science, law, economy) is therefore an essential aspect for the position. Biometric identification system in developing countries is becoming an indispensable governance tool for ensuring access to educational opportunities, financial services, health and social welfare benefits program, as well as allowing electoral participation for citizens in making transitioning democracies more transparent and strong. The recently launched Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) goals spearheaded by the United Nations through a deliberative process involving its 193 Member States, as well as global civil society, also highlights the role of robust identification systems and their importance to development specifically as one of the proposed SDG targets (#16.9), but also as a key enabler of the efficacy of many other SDG targets. Last year the World Bank also launched its Identification for Development (ID4D) agenda highlighting the transformational potential of biometric ID systems for the delivery of basic services to the poor, with the goal of making “everyone count” by providing legal identity and delivering digital ID-enabled services to all. A person lacking a legally verifiable ID suffers legally, politically, socially, and economically. But in the developing world, enormous gains can be obtained from extending services and opportunities to all in new ways that can help developing countries improve electoral processes, political participation, functioning of governments and civil liberties. This all can help lead countries with poor democratic record transform in to a fully functional democracy. It will be really interesting to collaborate and research on mitigating the unintended consequences of digital ID systems and probably Center for Communication Governance can help create a multi-stakeholder group for furthering research and understanding of this new phenomena. Infographic: Biometric ID systems & democracies

Dear All, This is to introduce an ongoing project which we hope will contribute to the public debate on Aadhaar. This work is in response to the argument that India should adopt a biometric identification system because several other countries have done it. We set out to examine which other countries had done this (starting with commonwealth countries for now), whether they had data protection safeguards and whether they were democracies. Scroll.in was kind enough to build an infographic based on our dataset which you can see here <https://scroll.in/article/851282/are-countries-with-a-poor-democratic-recor…>. It appears that it is mostly countries with a poor democratic record that use these systems. Please do take a look. PLSC-Europe 2018 Call for Papers PLSC-Europe 2018 will be held in Brussels on Saturday 27 January 2018, right after CPDP2018 (http://www.cpdpconferences.org) CPDP – Computers, Privacy & Data Protection conference – is an annual gathering of academics, lawyers, practitioners, policy-makers, industry, and civil society from all over the world. Its 11th edition, “The Internet of Bodies”, will take place from Wednesday 24 January to Friday 26 January 2018. PLSC-Europe will follow on Saturday 27 January 2018. Based on the popular Privacy Law Scholars Conference (PLSC) event in the United States, PLSC-Europe is dedicated to bringing together privacy law scholars, practitioners, and privacy scholars from other disciplines from across Europe and beyond to discuss current issues. PLSC-Europe aims at fostering greater connections between academia and practice (industry, legal, advocacy, and government), and at bringing together law scholars with academics and professionals from other disciplines (e.g. economics, philosophy, political science, computer science). The first PLSC-Europe was held in October 2015 in conjunction with the Amsterdam Privacy Conference, and the second one in May 2017, in conjunction with TILTing Perspectives 2017. From 2017 onwards, PLSC-Europe became a regular event co-organized by the University of Amsterdam (IvIR), Tilburg University (TILT), and the Free University Brussels (LSTS/Privacy Salon), alternating between Amsterdam, Tilburg, and Brussels. The third edition of PLSC-Europe will be held on 27 January 2018 in Brussels. PLSC is a paper workshop. Papers are not available, and proceedings will not be released. The papers discussed are works in progress, and so will not be publicly released, nor publicized: the ideas presented by the authors are often still developing, and need further incubation before being finalised. In a PLSC paper workshop, a “commenter” leads a discussion among participants on an author's paper. Authors are encouraged to listen to the discussion, rather than steer it or participate actively to it. There are no panels or keynotes at PLSC: the idea is to help the author by giving feedback and advice on the paper. This international fellowship offers a unique opportunity to innovative thinkers who wish to engage in exchange with fellow researchers and are interested in setting up new initiatives. Our fellows are part of an international team of researchers and participate in the institute’s various active projects. We particularly encourage early-stage researchers to apply. IMPACT SCHOOL – Science Transfer in the 21st century

Still, scientific expertise often remains within its own domain and only reaches relevant decision-makers in civil society indirectly and belatedly. This three-day training programme is tailored to up-and-coming researchers that want to learn the skills necessary to maximize the impact of their research, also—but not exclusively—in relation to evaluation procedures of science funders. The sessions will be held by experts in their respective fields and cover the three dimensions of scholarly impact: societal impact, economic impact, and political impact. 29 November – 1 December 2017 Alexander von Humboldt Institute for Internet and Society (HIIG) Französische Straße 9 | 10117 Berlin *Participants:* The training is aimed at up-and-coming researchers from all disciplines (e.g., PhD students, Post-Docs, junior faculty).
