Call for Participation:
Teaching with Data Rights
International Workshop 9 February 2024, Brussels
We invite expressions of interest for an international workshop on Teaching with Data Rights, hosted by the Law, Science, Technology & Society (LSTS) Research Group of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) on Friday 9 February 2024, in Brussels (Belgium). The workshop will bring together educators and researchers with experience or interested in using data rights in their teaching.
Data rights have existed in some manner in Europe for over half a century, and have been used to empower people against discrimination, abuse of power, indignity and other negative consequences that might result from data processing. In the last few years, the European Union (EU) has adopted a barrage of digital rules, many of which introduce, strengthen, or expand data rights. For data rights to be meaningful, however, they need to be exercised widely and frequently, and thus also for various purposes. With this workshop we wish to better understand how data rights can empower individuals in increasingly datafied societies also in education, beyond some more commonly discussed contexts of (academic) research<https://osf.io/preprints/lawarxiv/b5dwm>, litigation<https://uitspraken.rechtspraak.nl/#!/details?id=ECLI:NL:GHAMS:2023:796>, or citizens awareness<file:///Users/jefausloos/Documents/Work/04.Conferences:meetings/20240209-TeachingDataRights/%3chttps:/urbanstudies.brussels/news-events/urban-brussels-2-repair-cafes-digital-rights%3e>. We are interested in discussing how to teach about data rights (e.g. exploring requirements, compliance, or how to excercise them), and using data rights to teach about other topics (e.g. media literacy, data doubles, digital infrastructures, or content moderation). In other words, we aim to discuss data rights both as the object of learning, and data rights as pedagogical tool.
We are looking for participants with experience in using data rights in teaching or interested in learning from others how to integrate them in their curricula. We are committed to integrating perspectives from different disciplines present at the workshop (e.g., computer science, critical data studies, education studies, law, etc.) to stimulate new insights and creative usages.
We ask interested participants to submit a short motivation letter (max 1 page) describing how they use or see a connection between data rights and their educational activities. Send your expression of interest to: Rocco.Saverino(a)vub.be<mailto:Rocco.Saverino@vub.be>. Limited funding is available to cover (international) travel expenses of some participants. Please indicate in your expression of interest whether you would require funding to participate.
IMPORTANT DATES
* Deadline for submission: 10 January 2024.
* Responses to submission: 15 January 2024.
* Workshop: 9 February 2024.
