Geneva Internet Dispute Resolution Policies 1.0 (GIDRP 1.0) project

Dear Colleagues (apologies for potential cross-posting but we want to make sure to get the message out) We are very pleased to inform you about the launch of the Geneva Internet Dispute Resolution Policies 1.0 (GIDRP 1.0) project: www.geneva-internet-disputes.ch<http://www.geneva-internet-disputes.ch>. The GIDRP 1.0 project has emerged as a result of an international conference that took place at the University of Geneva on 17 - 18 June 2015, at which experts presented and discussed selected facets of the numerous legal challenges surrounding Internet-related disputes (www.internet-disputes.ch<http://www.internet-disputes.ch>). In the months following the conference, a team of researchers from the University of Geneva took up the mission to draft policy proposals on the following four issues: - Which national courts shall have jurisdiction in Internet-related disputes ? - How to structure an alternative dispute resolution system for Internet-related disputes ? - How shall disputes about the licensing of Standard Essential Patents (SEP) under Fair, Reasonable and Non-Discriminatory (FRAND) terms be solved? - How shall immunities apply on the Internet? The GIDRP 1.0 is a digital policy project: it is not carved in stone and is not even materialized in any paper publication. The reason for this is that the GIDRP 1.0 is conceived as a work in progress (more precisely: a policy work in progress), that must be discussed, criticized and improved by a process of broad consultation and inclusive participation. Tilburg Institute for Law, Technology, and Society (TILT) With approximately 40 staff members the Tilburg Institute for Law, Technology, and Society (TILT) is a multidisciplinary center at Tilburg University specializes in research and education in the field of technology regulation. TILT is one of the largest and most innovative European research centers in technology regulation. It is an independent management unit within Tilburg Law School, a research-led, specialized school that is rated among the best in Europe. TILT invites applications for an assistant/associate professorship (UD/UHD) in the field of 'technology regulation'. Emerging innovations in ICT, genetics, robotics and neurotechnologies present both opportunities and challenges for society. On the one hand, it is challenging to design adequate regulatory frameworks for these technologies that are legitimate, effective, and sustainable. On the other hand, these same technologies offer new opportunities as potentially powerful regulatory instruments. TILT's research focuses on both regulation of technology and on regulation by technology. We aim to strengthen of our multidisciplinary team by attracting a scholar in regulation and governance who offers knowledge and understanding of fundamental issues regarding (technology) regulation, different types of regulatory strategies, rules, standards and enforcement, quality and evaluation, and multi-level governance. new book: Private Power, Online Information Flows and EU Law

I am delighted to announce that my book, Private Power, Online Information Flows and EU Law: Mind the Gap has just been published by Hart: http://www.bloomsbury.com/au/private-power-online- information-flows-and-eu-law-9781509900657/ (See attachment for a 20% discount flyer). *Description* This monograph examines how European Union law and regulation address concentrations of private economic power which impede free information flows on the Internet to the detriment of Internet users' autonomy. In particular, competition law, sector specific regulation (if it exists), data protection and human rights law are considered and assessed to the extent they can tackle such concentrations of power for the benefit of users. Using a series of illustrative case studies, of Internet provision (including the net neutrality debate), search, mobile devices and app stores, and the cloud, the work demonstrates the gaps that currently exist in EU law and regulation. It is argued that these gaps exist due, in part, to current overarching trends guiding the regulation of economic power, namely neoliberalism, by which only the situation of market failure can invite ex ante rules, buoyed by the lobbying of regulators and legislators by those in possession of such economic power to achieve outcomes which favour their businesses. Given this systemic, and extra-legal, nature of the reasons as to why the gaps exist, solutions from outside the system are proposed at the end of each case study. *Endorsement* 'This is a richly textured, critically argued work, shedding new light on case studies in information law which require critical thinking.
