Call for Workshop Proposals: 10th International Conference on Social Informatics (SocInfo 2018)

*** Please forward to anyone who might be interested *** The SocInfo’18 Committee invites proposals for the Workshops Day of the conference. The preferred formats are group discussions and practical tutorials. A tutorial should provide either an in-depth look at an emerging technique or software package or a broad summary of an important direction in the field of social informatics, preferably with a practical training. A group discussion should provide an opportunity to informally discuss issues with a selected focus, especially conceptual, methodological or practical difficulties of social informatics, as opposed to presenting final results. Workshops should not be structured as mini-conferences dominated by long talks and short discussions. Instead, the organizers are encouraged to promote different types of activities including games and brainstorming sessions. All workshops should be interactive and involve between 15 and 40 members. Finally, the workshops should have the potential to attract the interest of researchers in computer science and social sciences, and possibly of developers and practitioners. Proposal content Proposals for workshops should be between 2 and 5 pages in length (10pt, single column, with reasonable margins), written in English, and should contain the following: • A concise title. • The names, affiliations and contact information of the organizers. A typical workshop should count no more than three co-chairs, preferably affiliated with different organizations. • Proposed duration of the workshop – half or full day (3-4 hours or 6-7 hours). • A statement of the workshop: objective/goals. • A statement detailing: Why is the workshop topic important? Why is the workshop timely? How is it relevant to social informatics? • A two-paragraph description of the workshop topic and themes. • If the workshop was conducted before, where and when was it conducted? Please give details on number of attendees and acceptance ratio (if applicable). • A description of the workshop format and list of proposed activities. • An indication of the maximum number of participants and a description of how workshop submissions will be selected: by the time of registration, by some predefined criteria or else. • A short bio of the workshop organizers, including a description of their qualifications relative to the topic area, and past experience in organizing/facilitating workshops or research meetings. Proposal review The workshop chairs will review each submission and select those with the highest scores on originality, interdisciplinarity, coherence with the conference aims, and ability to attract audience. All best (and apologies for cross-posting), Cornelius ***Visiting Postdoctoral Fellowships “Algorithmed Public Spheres” (Deadline: May 1st)*** SUMMARY: The Hans Bredow Institute for Media Research in Hamburg, Germany, invites applications for international postdoctoral research fellows who will conduct innovative research on the social and cultural impact of algorithms during stays of 3-12 months in Hamburg in the academic year 2018/2019. DESCRIPTION: The Hans Bredow Institute for Media Research is a publicly funded research institute that focuses on the study of mediated public communication. Its research encompasses both broadcast and digital communication from an interdisciplinary and comparative perspective. The postdoctoral research network Algorithmed Public Spheres ( https://aps.hans-bredow-institut.de/) has been established to study the relevance of algorithms for the constitution of the public sphere. We emphasize in particular the importance of algorithms for filtering, ranking and selecting media content and for structuring digital communication. In contrast to the use of data mining in areas such as healthcare, credit scoring and general business analytics, where such techniques have a long tradition, the impact of algorithms on the public sphere poses novel challenges. How are communication, media, and public discourse impacted by transferring the dominant logics of consumption from other industries to news, information, and political deliberation, implemented in social media platforms, search engines, and on news websites? How do we adapt as individuals as well as as a society to the growing prevalence of algorithmic systems? Research in this area could include: - Governance of and by algorithms - Algorithm awareness and algorithm literacy - Measurement of algorithmic bias and discrimination - Algorithms in news production, distribution and consumption processes - User interaction with and rationalization of algorithms We invite applications for international postdoctoral research fellows from fields including, but not restricted to, computer and information science, communication and media studies, law, political science, sociology and philosophy, who will conduct innovative research on the social and cultural impact of algorithms during stays of 3-12 months in Hamburg in the academic year 2018/2019. We particularly welcome cross-cutting research proposals that integrate technical and social perspectives and result in concrete outcomes, for example in the form of peer-reviewed research articles or proposals for externally funded projects. Up to two funded fellowships will be awarded as result of this call. The fellowships cover airfare and a contribution to the accommodation and subsistence in Hamburg. In specific cases, we may offer a temporary employment contract instead of a scholarship. Dear colleagues, Laboratory for Internet Studies, HSE, is hosting the 10th Social Informatics conference with outstanding speakers and in a wonderful city of St.Petersburg, on September 25-28, 2018. As usual, conference proceedings will be published in Lecture Notes for Computer Science Springer series. We would like to specially encourage social scientists to apply. We will do our best to ensure that reviewership is not computer science centered, and we will be arranging a journal publication for best papers. Paper submission deadline: May 9, 2018. Social Informatics is an interdisciplinary venue for researchers from Computer Science, Informatics, Social Sciences and Management Sciences to share ideas and opinions, and present original research work on studying the interplay between socially-centric platforms and social phenomena. The ultimate goal of Social Informatics is to create better understanding of socially-centric platforms not just as a technology, but also as a set of social phenomena. To that end, we are inviting interdisciplinary papers, on applying information technology in the study of social phenomena, on applying social concepts in the design of information systems, on applying methods from the social sciences in the study of social computing and information systems, on applying computational algorithms to facilitate the study of social systems and human social dynamics, and on designing information and communication technologies that consider social context.
