Dear colleagues, The Center for Internet and Society of CNRS, Paris, organizes a monthly online reading event, Hypertexts, taking the form of a discussion with the author of a book that's making the news in the field of internet and society. Sessions are not recorded, link is sent upon registration. The next Hypertexts session will take place on Tuesday, February 6, 2024, from 5 to 6 pm CET, and we're delighted to host Kevin Guyan (University of Glasgow) for his book Queer Data (Bloomsbury Publishing, 2022). The book will be discussed by Simon Apartis and Ramya Chandrasekhar, researchers at CIS-CNRS. We invite those who are interested to sign up. Our lives are increasingly shaped by it and how it is defined, collected and used. But who counts in the collection, analysis and application of data? This important book is the first to look at queer data – defined as data relating to gender, sex, sexual orientation and trans identity/history. The author shows us how current data practices reflect an incomplete account of LGBTQ lives and helps us understand how data biases are used to delegitimise the everyday experiences of queer people. Guyan demonstrates why it is important to understand, collect and analyse queer data, the benefits and challenges involved in doing so, and how we might better use queer data in our work. Arming us with the tools for action, this book shows how greater knowledge about queer identities is instrumental in informing decisions about resource allocation, changes to legislation, access to services, representation and visibility. The workshop will bring together educators and researchers with experience or interested in using data rights in their teaching. Data rights have existed in some manner in Europe for over half a century, and have been used to empower people against discrimination, abuse of power, indignity and other negative consequences that might result from data processing. In the last few years, the European Union (EU) has adopted a barrage of digital rules, many of which introduce, strengthen, or expand data rights. For data rights to be meaningful, however, they need to be exercised widely and frequently, and thus also for various purposes. Dear colleagues, It is a great pleasure to announce the 2024 edition of the CyberBRICS Fellowship Programme to be hosted at the Center for Technology and Society at FGV Law School, Rio de Janeiro. https://cyberbrics.info/call-for-applications-cyberbrics-fellowship-program… The programme aims to support a selected group of highly qualified postgraduate, doctoral, and postdoctoral researchers working in the area related to the activities of the 2024 work plan of the CyberBRICS project<https://cyberbrics.info/>, namely artificial intelligence, digital industrial policy, and AI regulation, with a particular focus on cloud computing and digital public infrastructures in Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa (BRICS).
