Released Neubot 0.4.5 http://www.neubot.org/neubot-0.4.5 Version 0.4.5 is the latest generally-available stable release of Neubot, distributed for Ubuntu >= 10.04, MacOSX >= 10.6, Windows >= XP SP3 and FreeBSD as well as in source format (.tar.gz and .zip). The release contains 94 patches. The diffstat says: 148 files changed, with 5706 lines inserted and 4591 lines deleted. Here are the most relevant changes: o UNIX: specify clearly what Neubot under UNIX should be. Under UNIX Neubot is made of three components: the daemon, the viewer and the notifier. The daemon runs in background, runs tests, exports its state and recent results on 127.0.0.1 (and depends on Python). The viewer is a WebKit- and Gtk-based Python component that connects to the daemon and shows the web user interface. The notifier is a PyNotify-based Python component that periodically checks the daemon state and, eventually, notifies the user (for example when the privacy is not OK but of course we plan to do more with it). This bundle of features is, in my opinion, the Neubot experience and this is what should be installed when a users installs "neubot". That said, of course there are special cases, such when one does not have X on her UNIX machine. In such cases, it obviously would be crazy to pull all those dependencies and a "-nox" flavor of the package should be available. If the viewer (or notifier) component of the "-nox" package flavor is invoked, it should just print an error message and exit. Of course, in the "-nox" case one can still point its browser to http://127.0.0.1:9774/ and control Neubot. To communicate that "neubot" is actually the feature bundle, I have replaced the neubot_gui and neubot_notify external commands with two internal commands, `neubot viewer` and `neubot notifier`. Here the model is `vim`, which is always one command but behaves differently depending on packaging. Rather than, say, `git` and `gitk`, which are two distinct packages. Pursuing this vision, I have simplified a lot the Makefile, made sure that all functionalities are available on all UNIX platforms (for example in previous release neubot_gui and neubot_notify were available only for Debian) and added hooks to simplify the work of packagers. You just need to specify the proper BINDIR, MANDIR etc. when invoking make(1) to customize the place where you install stuff. The only thing I've not added is a hook to specify the location of the database. Neubot was written with the BSD hier(7) in mind, and /var/neubot is OK under this convention. In the GNU/Linux world, the proper location would be /var/lib/neubot. I will do that in the 0.4.6 release cycle. o Debian: specify all deps and fork out a -nox package flavor. Coherently with the clear specification of Neubot under UNIX I've added all the needed dependencies (python-webkit, pynotify) to the Debian package control file. And I have created a "-nox" flavor of the package, which basically just does not list such dependencies. If you have already installed Neubot on a Debian without X or without Gnome, you upgrade and you find that you need to install a lot of unwanted deps then I suggest to uninstall Neubot and then download and install the `neubot-nox` package. This can be automated, for example, as follows:: sudo dpkg -r neubot && \ wget http://releases.neubot.org/_packages/neubot-nox-0.4.5-1_all.deb && \ sudo dpkg -i neubot-nox-0.4.5-1_all.deb From that point on, neubot-nox should stay uptodate. o negotiate: rewrite server-side negotiation. The negotiator is the server-side Neubot component that enqueues clients that want to perform a test, negotiates parameters, provides test code with the list of authorized clients and collects the results. BitTorrent and speedtest had two different negotiation mechanisms and speedtest one was not always reliable. During last month I have modified heavily BitTorrent negotiation, I migrated speedtest to use it and got rid of the old negotiator code. o MacOS: do not show Neubot pseudo-user in login screen. As reported by many, when you install Neubot on MacOSX the Neubot user appears in the login screen. Starting from this release, this will be no longer the case, both for new users and for users that have already installed Neubot. In the latter case, Neubot will automatically update and fix the problem during the update process. o UNIX: remove start-neubot-daemon command. Advising installing-from-sources folks to use Python's full path in their /etc/rc.local is much better than rolling out one command to do that. Especially given that the way to go is, of course, to provide more packages and/or be added to distributions repositories. o www: allow to force web user interface language. Now there is one more configuration variable in settings.html, named `www.lang`. The default value of this variable is (unsurprisingly) 'default' and means "use whathever language is configured by the browser". You can set it to 'it' and 'en' to enforce Italian and English language respectively. Setting it to a language for which a translation does not exist causes the web interface to show messages in English. I've added this new setting because from the viewer you have otherwise no way to set the default language, given that it is a very simple Python application, which basically just embeds WebKit into a Gtk window. Thanks to Alessio Palmero Aprosio, who done part of the work. o privacy: don't fail on UNIX when /var/neubot does not exist. The privacy command was assuming /var/neubot existed, which is not true in one case. Namely, when the MacOS installer is setting up the environment before starting Neubot for the first time. Thanks to Francesco Corazza for pointing this out. The fix is to use neubot.database DATABASE interface to create the database. Some more work should be done, because, as of now, the code assumes /var/neubot/database.sqlite3 is either opened by root or by the _neubot user. So, there may be surprises if you employ this command to print privacy settings as a normal user. o server: add looking glass to inspect internals. While testing the new negotiate code, I wrote a lot of instrumentation to inspect Neubot server internals. This has not a tangible effect for users, still I would like to mention it because this piece of code is something that allows more control of the server. Which, in turn, allows me to have more insight and provide a better service. For example, using this code I noticed that there was a certain amount of queueing and decided to bump the parallelism from 3 to 7. o simplejson: update to version 2.2.0. o code rationalizations, cleanups and regression tests. *36° Mercoledì di NEXA* *"Urban Sensing, la vita delle città in tempo reale"* http://nexa.polito.it/mercoledi-36* * *Mercoledì 9 novembre 2011 ore 18 – 20* (2° mercoledì del mese) Via Boggio 65/a, Torino (primo piano) Live streaming: http://nexa.polito.it/events Le strategie di pianificazione ed evoluzione delle città possono beneficiare, ad oggi, dell'uso di nuove sorgenti di informazione in tempo reale che rendono accessibili le emozioni, le progettualità, le tensioni e le attenzioni espresse attraverso*basi di dati aperte*, *conversazioni online*, e *sistemi di /publishing/ ubiquo*. Lo sfruttamento dei dati, tenendo conto di elementi fondamentali quali l'interoperabilità e l'adozione di formati aperti, rappresenta dunque un tassello fondamentale per migliorare le nostre città, partendo dalle *proposte dei cittadini* e avvalendosi di *strumenti per il monitoraggio*. Occorrono, in primo luogo, mezzi per il cosiddetto */social network conversation harvesting/*, ovvero l'ascolto in tempo reale delle conversazioni sui social network da cui emergono osservazioni e dibattiti sulla città. Il passo successivo consiste nel creare vere e proprie "reti di sensibilità" (*/sensing networks/*) attraverso l'uso di sensori capaci di misurare grandezze ecologiche ed ecosistemiche. E' possibile mettere in pratica modalità di osservazione della città capaci di trasformare in uno strumento concreto le narrative stratificate secondo le strategie che cittadini, organizzazioni e imprese attuano sul territorio (/ubiquitous anthropology/ <http://www.fakepress.it/FP/?p=37>) e su tali basi realizzare "*sistemi esperti disseminati*" che coagulino l'/intelligence/ diffusa rappresentata dai contributi di una molteplicità di soggetti per creare un /framework/ di elaborazione delle informazioni che, in tempo reale, si materializzano nelle città. In questo contesto, l'uso dell'*infoestetica* come mezzo per attuare modalità radicali di accessibilità dell'informazione va in parallelo all'evoluzione del concetto di */user generated engine/*. Attraverso di essi possibile immaginare scenari di trasformazione del concetto di cittadinanza, mirando a visioni del cittadino quale agente consapevole e attivo che prende parte a un multi-sistema di conoscenza ubiqua in tempo reale. Di questi temi discuterà *Salvatore Iaconesi*, ingegnere e /interaction designer/, assieme ai Nexiani e a tutti coloro i quali avranno piacere di intervenire nel dibattito. *Biografia*: *Salvatore Iaconesi* è ingegnere, /interaction designer/, artista e consulente strategico per diverse organizzazioni. Released Neubot 0.4.4

Released Neubot 0.4.4 http://www.neubot.org/neubot-0.4.4 Version 0.4.4 is the latest generally-available stable release of Neubot, distributed for Ubuntu >= 10.04, MacOSX >= 10.6,Windows >= XP SP3 and FreeBSD. (Yes, Neubot was recently added to FreeBSD ports collection!) Of course, Neubot 0.4.4 is also available in source format (.tar.gz and .zip). This release contains 127 patches. The diffstat says: 114 files changed, with 3162 lines inserted and 3832 lines deleted. Here are the most relevant changes: o update to privacy policy 1.5. Privacy policy v1.0 allowed Neubot to collect users' Internet address without users' explicit consent, thanks to special provisions that allow researchers to do that. And, while MacOSX installer asked for user permission, other platforms were still exploiting such special provisions by default. The novelty of this release is that special provisions are gone and Neubot does not perform any test until the user provides her explicit and informed consent. Of course Neubot notifies the user when it has not enough permissions to run its tests. For example, under Windows it opens privacy.html in the default web browser and shows an explanatory message. This is somewhat brute force and I look forward to make Windows installer similar to MacOSX one. Similarly, under Ubuntu and Debian it uses libnotify bindings to inform the user that the informed consent is missing. (I initially tried to ask for consent in the installer using debconf, but did not managed to make it work with Ubuntu Software Center. So I fell back to libnotify.) Note that libnotify bindings are not listed in the package dependencies. Which is a problem for Debian machines where libnotify bindings are not installed. (While Ubuntu installs such bindings by default.) I decided not to list libnotify into dependencies because I look forward to spin off a neubot-x11 package that contains all the graphical commands and lists all dependencies. Finally, if none of the above method works or you installed from sources, Neubot will print warnings on the standard error and/or on the system log. We removed special provisions because we want to always show people the policy and we hope that helps to have as much people as possibile give Neubot the permission to share the IP address (and hence the results) with other researchers. The availability of third party studies from independent researchers will benefit both Neubot authors and users. By the way, I've also received some insightful comments on the privacy policy from Eleonora Bassi. And I am working to implement those suggestions to further clarify the privacy policy. But did not managed to include them in 0.4.4. o debian pkg: reenable repository after Ubuntu upgrade. Thanks to Davide Allavena, who reported the bug, I am now aware that Ubuntu disables third party repos during an upgrade. So I've lifted some code from Google Chrome debian package to reenable Neubot repos after an upgrade. Ubuntu users should check whether Neubot repos was disabled during an upgrade and reenable it. Or they can simply manually install this version of Neubot, which includes the fix for the problem. o Ubuntu: removed status icon. I've removed the status icon code. The reason is that desktops are moving towards removing the notification area and replacing it with libnotify-like notifications. o Ubuntu: merged neubot_webkit with the open browser code and renamed it neubot_gui. I realized that it was possibile to fallback to opening the default browser when webkit is not available. So I merged already existing code to do that with the existing webkit code. And changed the name because now the scope of the program has changed too. (BTW this command will be the foundation of the above mentioned neubot-x11 pkg.) o Ubuntu: more debian-compliant package While working on the above-mentioned debconf-enhanced debian installer, I've used pylint to clean up the debian package as much as possible. There are some open issues but overall the quality of the package has increased a lot in this release. (Having a 100% compliant package is a necessary condition to ask Debian folks to add Neubot to the official Debian repositories.) o Windows: do not install package with "root" privileges so we can start it again at the end of the installation. In Neubot 0.4.2 I noticed that the installer was starting Neubot up with "root" privileges and disabled that. In this release I've modified the installer to always run as an ordinary user. Which allows to safely start Neubot at the end of the installation. Please, note that this means the new installer cannot uninstall automatically old Neubot packages because it is not privileged. If you have installed an old version of Neubot, you should uninstall that before installing this new version. (If you don't, the installer will abort and tell you that it cannot proceed until you remove at hand the old version.) Now Neubot is installed into the user profile directory, e.g. for me:: C:\Documents and Settings\simone\Neubot\ An additional reason behind installing Neubot for each user is that I'm going to implement autoupdates. And I don't want to take the security risk of running such autoupdates with high privileges. Given that I'm not a Windows expert and that seems not a trivial task. o more code rationalizations, bug and reliability fixes, unit tests. The release candidates have been tested on Ubuntu 10.10, Windows XP SP3, Windows 7 and MacOSX 10.6.8. *35° Mercoledì di NEXA* *"**IGF 2011, il futuro di Internet riparte da Nairobi**"* http://nexa.polito.it/mercoledi-35* * *Mercoledì 12 ottobre 2011 ore 18 -**20* (2° mercoledì del mese) Via Boggio 65/a, Torino (primo piano) Live streaming: http://nexa.polito.it/events L'_Internet Governance Forum <http://www.intgovforum.org/cms/>_(IGF) è un tentativo di coordinazione dei poliedrici attori che influenzano l'evoluzione di Internet. Infatti, nel corso delle due fasi del _Summit mondiale sulla società dell'informazione <http://www.itu.int/wsis/index.html>_(WSIS), emerse il bisogno di un *nuovo approccio volto a riorganizzare la coabitazione forzata di regolazione tecnica e giuridica nel cyberspazio*, ed a conferire alla società civile la possibilità di esprimere direttamente le proprie opinioni e i propri interessi. Benché le varie delegazioni diplomatiche cercassero di trovare una soluzione negoziale tradizionale al fine di rapportarsi al nuovo fenomeno Internet, la pressione delle organizzazioni non governative e l'imprescindibilità della comunità tecnica, vero genitore di Internet, costrinsero i *rappresentanti dei vari governi nazionali a scendere a patti con le loro nuove controparti*. Infatti, il WSIS, inizialmente concepito come laboratorio di strategie volte a colmare il divario digitale, testimoniò l'emersione prorompente della /governance/di Internet e l'instaurazione di un nuovo approccio multiattore (/multi-stakeholder/). La seconda fase del WSIS decretò quindi la nascita dell'IGF, avveniristica piattaforma di /knowledge-sharing/, creata al fine di soddisfare l'anelito d'interazione e cooperazione dei diversi attori del panorama Internet. Di questi temi discuterà *Luca Belli*, dottorando presso l'Université Panthéon-Assas di Parigi, che dopo aver analizzato le principali caratteristiche e l'apporto innovativo dell'IGF, prendendo in considerazione alcuni /workshop/dell'IGF di Nairobi appena conclusosi, illustrerà il modello multi-stakeholder e affronterà due temi particolarmente rilevanti nell'ambito della governance di Internet: la *Network Neutrality* e la *libertà di espressione*. Come di consueto, l'ospite avrà l'occasione di confrontarsi con i co-direttori del Centro NEXA su Internet & Società, i fellow e tutti coloro i quali desiderano intervenire nel dibattito. *Biografia*: *Luca Belli* è un dottorando presso l'Université Panthéon-Assas <http://www.u-paris2.fr/> (PRES Sorbonne Univesités <http://www.sorbonne-universites.fr/#KLINK>) di Parigi. Released Neubot 0.4.2 http://www.neubot.org/neubot-0.4.2 Version 0.4.2 is the latest generally-available stable release of Neubot, distributed for Ubuntu >= 10.04, MacOSX >= 10.6 and Windows >= XP SP3. Of course, Neubot 0.4.2 is also available in source format (.tar.gz and .zip). This release contains 143 patches. The diffstat says: 87 files changed, with 3167 lines inserted and 1392 lines deleted. Here are the most relevant changes: o MacOS: automatic updates in the background. This implementation of the automatic updates is very generic, in the sense that is based on the standard UNIX API and does not leverage MacOS specific facilities, such as launchd(8). I have patches to do that but they are not ready for this release and they will go into the next one; o Win32: disable autostart at the end of the install. Because the installer runs with high privileges and so starts Neubot with high privileges too. (Of course Neubot will autostart each time you login on the system and the _only_ difference is that it is not started at the end of the installation.) I have scheduled some work on the Windows installer for the coming weeks. I hope I will be able to find a viable solution for this privileges issue too; o Ubuntu: new GUI, based on PyGtk+ and PyWebKit. The basic idea is to embed WebKit into a Gtk+ window and to point it to Neubot Web UI. So, now you use Neubot's own application instead of opening its Web User Interface into the browser. I think this is more usable and clear. http://www.neubot.org/improving-user-experience-under-ubuntu BTW I have plans to do something similar for MacOS and Windows too; o database: add OS name and Neubot version to results. I've added them because they help data analysis. The version is important because the behavior of the tests may change over time, because of changes in the code base. The operating system is important as well, because every OS implements TCP/IP in a peculiar way; o net: undo the 262144-receive buffer optimization. Using a fixed-size buffer penalizes Linux, which has very advanced buffer management strategies designed for high bandwidth-delay product networks. (Having the version number and the OS name in the database allows to track the effect of this change quite well); o www: if privacy settings are not set, the starting page is privacy.html not index.html. We are modifying our installers to show privacy policy and ask for permission to collect and share/publish. The installer will also refuse to install if you don't give the permission to collect the results. But the work is still in progress, and for now only the MacOS installer is ready. Meanwhile, it will not hurt to land users on privacy.html; o privacy: do not allow nonsense transitions once you have set the permissions. There are two different changes here. 1. Once you have said that your are informed you cannot step back and tell Neubot you're not informed. This is pure common sense. 2. Also, once you've given the permission to collect your results you cannot step back. This is to align with installers, that are being modified to allow installation only if you read the policy and give the permission to collect the results; o speedtest: use just one connection, like bittorrent does. This is the first step to make the two tests more comparable: of course comparing two connections with one _isn't_ fair, especially with high bandwidth-delay products or when there is more average congestion. More work is needed before we can say that the two tests stress the network in the same way. Namely, we need to change speedtest to work on a request-response basis, like bittorrent does. So, this is just the first step in the right direction. (And this is another case where saving the version number in the database would be very helpful to track the effects of the change.) o server: add support for a simple API to assess server state. This API is needed to implement a simple Nagios plugin, which can say whether the server state is OK or not; o nagios-plugin: finalize it. Now the plugin uses the abovementioned server API to assess server status and return something in the (OK, WARNING, ERROR) domain. o more code rationalizations, bug and reliability fixes, unit tests. The release candidates have been tested on Ubuntu 10.04, Windows XP SP3, Windows 7 and MacOSX 10.6. The main testing platform has been my laptop with MacOS 10.6.8.
