Dear colleagues, Some of you might be interested in the Data Governance School LatAm<https://cpdp.lat/data-governance-school-latam/> (DGSL), a new initiative we are launching as an academic spinoff of the Computers Privacy and Data Protection conference Latin America<https://cpdp.lat/en/> (CPDP LatAm). The DGSL will take place on 27, 28, 29 April, at FGV Law School in Rio de Janeiro and applications are open until 15 March. We have a limited number of scholarships to foster the inclusion of LGBTQI+ communities, black, indigenous and quilombola applicants in situations of social vulnerability. The DGSL aims to develop learning and research, facilitating the exchange of best practices on data governance in Latin America and will be structured into 3 modules: 1. Exploring and comparing Latin American data protection systems to identify convergences and divergences. 2. Analysis of latest technological and regulatory developments in data governance at the regional level, such as Artificial Intelligence, international data transfers, regulatory sandboxes etc. 3. Discussion of the latest global developments, such as personal data regulation in China, India, and the BRICS, the relationship between data protection and competition, and the impact these issues have on Latin America. A relevant part of the lectures will focus on case studies proposed by an outstanding group of lecturers, including some of the most prominent academics of the region, several top ranked business executives, and the agenda will feature presentations by almost all data protection regulators in Latin America. https://cpdp.lat/data-governance-school-latam/ Please feel free to share this email through your networks! The USG has issued two documents designed to advance trustworthy approaches to AI and address AI risk. First, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) will release its AI Risk Management Framework 1.0 (AI RMF) on January 26th. The framework is a voluntary guidance for organizations to use when managing AI risks to individuals, organizations, and society by incorporating trustworthiness considerations into the design, development, use, and evaluation of AI products, services, and systems. It has been developed through a consensus-driven, transparent, and collaborative process among AI stakeholders– including representation from private industry, civil society, academia, and government agencies. The second document, issued by the US/EU Trade and Technology Council <https://t.e2ma.net/click/6bsbqf/aflz3nx/2wh2mw>, is a joint roadmap that <https://t.e2ma.net/click/6bsbqf/aflz3nx/ipi2mw> aims to guide the development of tools, methodologies, and approaches to AI risk management and trustworthy AI. The US and the EU agree that AI technologies should be shaped by democratic values and a commitment to human rights, but the two take a different approaches to balancing soft and hard law. To find common ground, the Roadmap is designed to 1: advance shared terminologies and taxonomies, 2: collaborate on standards and tools for trustworthy AI and risk management, 3: and monitor and measure existing and emerging AI risks.
