The 1st Istanbul Privacy Symposium aims to create an international and interdisciplinary platform, where privacy experts discuss current issues on data privacy. The theme of the Symposium is "*Data Protection and Innovations*”. Topics of significance will include the European General Data Protection Regulation’s (GDPR) effects on innovations, as well as emerging privacy issues with transformational technologies like Artificial Intelligence, Big Data, and Blockchain. We will be having an *Opening Cocktail on the 10th of October for NoC members from 20:00 - 22:00.* Also, we will be having a *closed meeting for NoC members on the 12nd of October, from 16:30 - 18:00*, following the last session of the Symposium. GDPR and China: what do we need to know? ( ��ŷ�ˡ��ݱ��й��Ӧ��˽�ʲô��) The European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is a leading legislation aiming to level up and harmonize personal data protection law across the European Union (EU). Due to GDPR��s exterritorial applicability, the data protection obligations and liabilities will have multiple, in-depth legal and economic impacts on foreign data controllers and processors beyond the EU borders. This includes data controllers and processors who are on the Chinese territory but process personal data of natural persons in the EU. Chinese transnational corporations with establishments in the EU may have already taken the needed measures for legal compliance. However, many controllers and processors in China - especially small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) - may not even be aware of the GDPR, not to mention the specific data protection obligations they should comply with in their processing practices, especially when they process EU residents�� or citizens�� personal data in the context of providing products or services via the Internet. The lack of awareness might be caused by a language barrier, geographic distance or resource shortage. After 25th May 2018 the controllers and processors in China may risk breaching the law and encounter large financial sanctions. Since no official Chinese version of the GDPR is available, this brochure tries to provide data controllers and processors in China with an overview of the data protection obligations and duties in trans-border processing under the GDPR. We hope this brochure may help controllers and processors in China understand GDPR��s major data processing principles and the level of data protection that is expected from the EU community. We hope they may act accordingly in future processing practices to better protect data subjects, whether they are from the EU or China. This brochure focuses more on controllers and processors in the private sector, rather than those of public bodies. It does not provide legal advice on law compliance, for which controllers and processors should consult legal experts in the field. Then we discuss data subject��s rights and the related duties of controllers. NEW BOOK Gobernanza y Regulaciones de Internet en América Latina

Dear colleagues, I would like to draw your attention (particularly of the Spanish speakers amongst you) on the recent release of the book Gobernanza y Regulaciones de Internet en América Latina (Internet Governance and Regulations in Latin America), which is now available in open access here bit.ly/IGRlatam<http://bit.ly/IGRlatam> This is the first work collecting the opinions of academics, regulators, prosecutors, business representatives and civil society advocates that are shaping the evolution of Internet governance and its regulations in Latin America. The volume features 29 chapters dedicated to network infrastructure, connectivity models, privacy and cybersecurity, and emerging issues, and it also includes two prefaces by Vint Cerf (Google's VP) and Raúl Echeberria (ISOC's VP), and an excellent postface by Edison Lanza (OAS' Rapporteur for freedom of expression). The book celebrates the 10th anniversary of the South School on Internet Governance (the main Internet Governance capacity-building initiative in the region) that, last year, was organised at FGV, gathering more than 250 experts and fellows. The Spanish edition of the volume was launched at LACIGF and the Portuguese version is currently being developed. We are also studying the feasibility of an English version. I will share further updates on these latter versions as soon as possible.
