Global web tracking study

Dear Members of the Network of Centers, On behalf of the Global Data Justice<http://www.globaldatajustice.org/> research group at TILT, Tilburg University, I am writing to invite you to participate in the first global study on the web tracking practices and networks. We are conducting research to explore what third-party trackers loaded through particular websites can tell us about the firms, networks and transfers that make up the global data market. Very little is known about the size and nature of this market on the global level, although many studies have been conducted on higher-income countries, and this study aims to begin to fill this gap in the research. We are seeking collaborators who can conduct a simple, fairly non-technical, 10-minute piece of web research using simple tools that will analyse what trackers load when they visit a) a news website and b) a mobile phone operator's website, each based in their own country. (For more information, see the brief 'info for participants' file attached). When we have a set of files showing which trackers load from similar searches in different countries, we will use this as the basis from which to anlayse more complex features of the data market such as links between firms, processes of data brokerage, and how the market for tracking data operates in different countries and regions. We aim to do this study yearly over the next five years, so if you would be interested in collaborating over the longer term, you can indicate this on the consent form (attached in pdf and word). We will keep your details private, but we will inform you of all findings from the study, and the eventual global dataset of trackers by country will be released as open data for researchers worldwide. If you would be willing to participate, or can recommend someone else who might, please reply to this email with a signed consent form (signing electronically is fine) and you will receive the protocol for the study. We plan to invite speakers/delegates from all around the world. The conference is an interdisciplinary event; for which we plan to invite academics, lawyers, engineers as well as other professions from different backgrounds. Invitation - NoC AI and Inclusion Learning Call, February 15

Dear all, Over the past year, NoC members have held a number of convenings with a central theme of AI and inclusion. In order to understand AI’s social impact, however, it’s necessary to have quantitative measures to understand AI’s impact, which are only beginning to be developed. Among the metrics that exist, emphasis is often on market impact as opposed to social impact. In response, we’re exploring global approaches to developing a broader set of metrics, measures, and baselines encompassing both market and social impacts. On behalf of the NoC, the Berkman Klein Center, and DigiChina--a project of the New America Foundation and contributor to the Ethics and Governance of AI Initiative--we are excited to invite you to an NoC learning call on February 15 at 9:30 am EST. This call, led by Berkman Klein, will cover ongoing efforts among the NoC and connected projects such as DigiChina, to better understand China’s digital developments and methods of creating globally relevant social AI impact metrics. This call will begin with an overview of DigiChina’s translational and analytical efforts on mapping the context of what ambitions we might want to measure with respect to AI in China. We will then have an open group discussion on related efforts and ideas for creating sound AI metrics, and how those can help promote beneficial AI. This learning call will be the first in a series on AI and inclusion, geared towards providing a platform for NoC members to share how they’re centering inclusive AI, and where there are gaps and overlaps. Dear All, the European Hub of the NoC <http://noc-europeanhub.net/> and the Humboldt Institute for Internet and Society (HIIG <https://www.hiig.de/en/>) in Berlin invite submissions for the essay competition twentyforty – utopias for a digital society <https://www.hiig.de/en/twentyforty/>. We are looking for radical and thought-provoking visions on what society will look like in 2040. Therefore we ask researchers to develop their utopias for a digital society along one of the five five topics: Learn. How will we learn in future? How will we teach? What will schools and universities look like? Love. How will we get to know people? How will we stay in touch? What will parenting, relationships, and love affairs look like? Live. How will we stay healthy and what will we eat? What will our homes look like? How will we communicate? Work. How will we work in the future? Where will we work? What will factories, offices and jobs look like? Rule. How will states interact in the international arena? How will conflicts be resolved in the future? In a first step, we ask for short abstracts of 1,000 words. Afterwards, ten authors will be invited for a one-week writing sprint (full expenses covered) to Berlin where they can finalise their essays under the guidance of storytelling experts. ITS Fellowship - Call Open

Dear NoC colleagues, It's with great enthusiasm that we announce that the *ITS Fellowship* is open for applications. Please visit our website for more information and to submit your application. http://fellowship.itsrio.org/ The Institute for Technology and Society invites researchers, students and professionals working with technology policy to apply to ITS Global Policy Fellowship Program and spend four weeks* in Brazil at ITS. Last year, we welcomed six fellows, who gave valuable contributions to the success of the Fellowship Program. Our Global Fellows will have the opportunity to work with the team who created and developed Brazil’s Internet Bill of Rights(Marco Civil da Internet), a bill that guarantees and promotes the protection of fundamental rights, including privacy, net neutrality and freedom of expression, which was approved as law in Brazil in April 2014. Furthermore, they will be able to choose one of our four main areas of work to develop their research in, namely: Law and Technology + Education + Democracy and Technology and Rethinking Innovation. The ITS Fellowship Program will offer the opportunity for those interested in internet and technology policy to deepen their knowledge about the Brazilian technology context. We have prepared an intensive 4-week* program for our fellows, which includes meeting ITS partners in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo in order to have the opportunity to visit some of the largest national and international technology companies operating in Brazil as well as governmental entities and exchange ideas, projects and research with those institutions. *IMPORTANT DATES* - Application deadline: March 10th, 2019; - Announcement of fellows by e-mail: April 08th, 2019; - Fellowship Program: starts June 24th, and finishes in July 19th, 2019; - Fellows are expected to stay in Rio from June 24th to July 19th.
