The applications of ICTs could support the city’s governing body in enabling new models of sustainable development. Moreover the ICTs are instrumental for the city’s governing body to engage with their citizens and listen to their needs when developing the city. In other words, the Internet paradigm is compelling the local governments to consider the use of ICTs to make the governance of a city more inclusive, collaborative, efficient and effective. Indeed this is a right path toward the development of Smart Cities. Objective In this Special Issue on ICTs, Citizens and Governance of Smart Cities, we aim to explore the role of ICTs to foster the citizens engagement and to improve the governance of Smart Cities, by calling for theoretical and empirical research studies on developed and developing countries worldwide. Recommended Topics Topics to be discussed in this special issue include (but are not limited to) the following: ICT to Improve government accountability, transparency and responsiveness in the Smart City ICT to Enable the democratic control in the Smart City ICT to Promote citizens self-empowerment, social participation and engagement ICT to Build the next generation of empowered civil servants of the Smart City ICT to Fostering innovation, efficiency and effectiveness in government of the Smart City ICT as game changer of public policy design and implementation ICT to Create value for the economy and businesses of the Smart City ICT as catalyst of new form of impact driven entrepreneurship in Smart City ICT as purveyor of bottom-up funding schemes in Smart Cities Open Government Data to precipitate the smart evolution of Cities Citizens’ acceptance and adoption of e-government initiatives Policy and regulation for ICT in the governance of Smart Cities Submission Procedure Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit papers for this special theme issue on or before December 15, 2015 to http://bit.ly/1NrqJ1r (third CFP from the top). All submissions must be original and may not be under review by another publication.
