The Transition: The good, the bad and the ugly
The IANA transition and ICANN accountability processes are lurching
to a conclusion. The Marrakech meeting in early March will finish
the deal. The basic outlines of a proposal that seems acceptable to,
but not loved by, most stakeholders is taking shape. It is time for
an overall assessment of where we are.
The deal is so complex and multifaceted that it is difficult to
grasp the total picture. To help with the assessment, this blog
divides the proposals into three basic categories: the good, the bad
and the ugly. Apologies to Sergio Leone, and for being trite, but
the IANA transition is nothing if not full of goodness, badness and
ugliness. We need to clearly separate them and decide whether the
total package is worthwhile.
