EESC takes a stand on
copyright and music
On 9 February 2010, the
European Economic and Social Committee will hold a public hearing on
copyright, with special emphasis on music. The debate will be an ideal platform to
exchange views on the issue of the governance and transparency of
collecting companies as well as related legal aspects.
Several areas are to be
addressed, including the issue of remuneration, the meaning of "public
performance", the sanctions for illegal exploitation and the
functioning of the collecting societies. The discussion will also focus
on the importance of strengthening the legal framework and protecting
intellectual property rights, which is part of the programme of the
Spanish Presidency and a pertinent issue in the EU and worldwide.
The participants will
include experts from the European institutions, national ministries, EU
Member State delegations as well as representatives of publisher
houses, music federations, collecting societies, consumer organisations
and universities. This wide range of stakeholders creates great
expectations for the outcome of this hearing and for future EU
initiatives in this field.
