There’s a strange techno-utopianism in the air. Maybe it’s because algorithms are everywhere today, dominating every aspect of our lives. With the processing power of modern computing, these invisible mathematical programs influence what we read, what we buy, with whom we socialise – helping us order the vast amounts of digital data that we navigate each day.
They do it so annoyingly well that we’ve come to believe there is nothing they cannot do. Perhaps it’s because we’re all so bemused by the sudden rise of Isil that we look to technology to save us.
Either way, there is an unrealistic expectation that either
the intelligence agencies or Facebook or Twitter can produce
some snazzy technology, some clever algorithm, which can
predict radical intent and prevent it.
