The set of thought-provoking papers in this First Monday special issue were originally part of the final symposium of the research project ADAM (adam.hypotheses.org <http://adam.hypotheses.org>), which from 2010 to 2014 investigated the social, political, economic and legal dimensions of distributed network architectures.
