The algorithmic management of work: A basic compass

Algorithmic management is the use of computer-programmed
procedures to coordinate labour. Algorithms can be used in
management functions, such as planning, organising, command,
coordination and control. Several digital technologies enable
algorithmic management. However, algorithmic management always
entails organisational and socio-institutional choices, which
matter for its development and implications. Algorithmic
management is most developed in digital labour platforms. Yet,
with the increasing digitisation of processes, it is expanding to
other work settings, with potentially disruptive effects.
Algorithmic management affects, by definition, work organisation.
In turn, it has the potential to transform business models and
industrial relations. Ultimately, it can have significant effects
on job quality.
