"Back to the lighter-than-air, new economy issue. When Amazon started, it thought it wouldn't need inventory or a distribution infrastructure. Now, Amazon holds inventories equal to 8.4% of revenue. Walmart's figure is 8.9%. In other words, the paradigmatic weightless retailer holds inventories in a quantity only slightly smaller than the paradigmatic traditional retailer.

Amazon's property, plant, and equipment are 14% of assets; Walmart's, with nearly 12,000 stores in 28 countries, are 22% of assets.

Not so weightless."
