The Guardian view on surveillance: citizens must be the state’s master. Not its plaything Britons need somehow to learn a new zeal when it comes to protecting the individual against the authorities. The UK may be a long way from Russia, but the warning from Russia should not be neglected. It is a warning about where things can lead when instead of the state being the citizen’s servant, the citizen becomes the plaything of the state.
