Dear friend,
Personal Democracy Forum 2011
was focused on agents of change: people and
movements that are changing the world using
technologies to get together, share and
organize. We listened to powerful talks and
took inspiration from amazing
people.
We are now back and there is plenty to talk
about: from the Digital Agenda Assembly to a
country that is crowdsourcing its new
constitution. But there is more to find out
in our newsletter and on PdF Europe blog.
And we hope to hear from you, too!

The Digital Agenda Assembly
concluded its works last week gathering
1300 people from all over Europe to
discuss the key points of the Digital
Agenda, the EU strategy for the digital
economy. But were all the stakeholders
there?

In the past few years Iceland, a small
island closer to Greenland than to
Europe, has been known mostly for the
collapse of its economic system and for
the eruption of its volcanoes. But
despite the very difficult situation,
the country firmly believes in public
participation and in the power of social
media to be *the* medium to better shape
it.

After years of successful projects aimed
at raising civic awareness,
mySociety.org commissioned a detailed
analysis of two of its most successful
projects, TheyWorkForYou and
WriteToThem. Researcher Tobias Escher
from the Oxford Internet Institute
conducted the studies, with many
interesting findings.

The Open Data Challenge, Europe's
biggest data competition, ended with the
announcement of the winners during the
Digital Assembly in Brussels. The topics
vary from improving mobility and
transportation to fighting corruption,
from the evolution of EU legislation to
mapping carbon dioxide emissions. The
competition had 430 entries from 24 EU
countries. Find out more about the
winners.

Votewatch.eu is an independent
organization that aim to promote better
debates and transparency in EU
decision-making. Recently they have
introduced another interesting tool,
VoteMatch.eu, that seems to sum up the
sort of complexity MEPs face on an
everyday basis. Give it a try.

For eight years,
Personal Democracy Forum has
been THE place in America
where politicos and
technologists gather to
learn from each other,
network, and glimpse the
future. That conversation
has come to Europe, too,
with the inaugural PdF Europe
conference, held in
Barcelona in November 2009
and then in October 2010.
PdF Europe blog
brings you the latest news
on tech in politics,
engaging in a constant
conversation with people all
over Europe. And we’d like
to make you a simple offer:
a free, weekly email update
on all these new ideas from
the Old World.
The PdF Europe Weekly Digest
is brought to you by Andrew
Rasiej and Micah L. Sifry,
and written by PdF Europe
editor Antonella Napolitano,
who is based in Milan.
If you have any comment or
suggestion, please let us know.
We’re looking forward to
hear from you about what’s
going on in your country. |
